Middlesbrough Bid Puts Newcastle Potential Deal in Doubt

There is news coming out of London today that Middlesbrough, who are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, have bid £5M for Darren Randoph of West Ham.

The Hammers are close to taking England International goalkeeper Joe Hart on a season loan deal to London.

And Middlesbrough have recently allowed both goalkeepers Victor Valdes and American Brad Guzan to leave the club this summer – so they need to sign a goalkeeper for next season in the Championship.

That bid is a similar £5M bid that was made for Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow a few weeks back but turned down, so we suppose that puts some question mark on whether the Smoggies are still interested in Karl.

Darren Randolph – West Ham goalkeeper – may be available

It was also possible that a swap deal between Karl Darlow and 21 year-old Middlesbrough winger Adama Traore was possible, but there has to be some doubt about that potential deal too.

But the Hammers will not let Randolph leave until the Joe Hart loan is a certainty – the news is that while it’s close it has not been fully worked out yet.

We cannot see Newcastle being interested in signing Darren Randolph, because he is no better than goalkeepers already at the club – Karl Darlow, Rob Elliott and Tim Krul.

We think Rafa is still hoping we can attract Pepe Reina  to Newcastle, but push will have to come shove fairly soon and we need to sign some players for next season – hopefully still some of our top targets.

What do you think?

You said he was “losing money out of his own pocket”. It wasn’t in his pocket in the first place.

Imho, the keeper thing makes sense, it’s cheaper to get a great keeper ( not counting picknose) to be a sweeper keeper, command his area and control his defense.
This would allow the defenders (with enough pace to get back and cover) to push further up the pitch ,minimizing and shortening the gap between defense and midfield and midfield to attack.
This allows more chance of overlaps and more players in advanced areas where Ritchie,Atsu,Perez,Gayle Dejong mitro Murphy and even Shelvey and Hayden can cause problems in dangerous areas.
Having a good shot stopper is great but no good if the defense and holding midfielders have to babysit his area even when we are in possession of the ball………again, just my thoughts as to why Rafa may be thinking the same……or I could be wrong and he don’t rate any of our keepers for anything………I just want the footy to start, what time is the match on tonight ( thanks for the tv link by the way, that’s a godsend it being on hearts tv)

I don’t understand while all these silly prices are being bandied around that Farlow is only worth 5M, is Pick Ford really worth 25M more than him?

Bobbybee, I do not recollect the club ever offering Cabaye better terms. You are right about him signing a contract without a gun pointed to his head, but I am making the point that Cabaye may have been happier, he had been rewarded for his displays with a better contract. It is the Modus Operandi in football, that if you are valued and are not being paid the going rate, you will fast-track your way to somebody that will pay you what you are worth.

The longer you stay somewhere underpaid, the more money you are losing… and yes, out of your own pocket – Markaccus.

Ancient – Was Cabaye worth more than 40k a week? He was very inconsistent for 2 seasons, and only during that last half season did he gain that consistency, perhaps because he was pushing for a move or maybe he had adjusted to the pace of the league by then. Whenever he had to play more than one game a week he couldn’t cope physically and performance levels dropped quite considerably. Just because other clubs pay stupid wages doesn’t mean we should.

I remember Tiote being given an improved deal but I think the idea was to sell them before they got to that stage where they needed to be awarded new deals.

    Macas,
Cabaye was brilliant in that first season, once they all realised that the blub had no intention of winning anything heads dropped and we had players like Debuchy an Sissoko openly talking about moves to bigger clubs.

Jail, please, I don’t want to row. I asked about transfers because you said what if Southampton come in. It was a genuine question and far from part of a rant mate.
If Southampton came in, it’s still down to Murphy to agree the deal. I asked simply because maybe you thought if that happened, Norwich could sell him from under our noses. Sorry if you took that as a dig, but it wasn’t and I can’t see how you did.
As I say, he’s under contract. He can refuse a move if his heart is set on another and clearly it is in this case. They can’t force his hand regardless of their stance. If he was considering it, we then would have to up our bid, but that’s totally hypothetical and not even under consideration in this case.
We hold all the cards right now. We’d be stupid to pay 16m if there’s a chance of getting him cheaper, that’s my point in a nutshell.
Let’s just wait and see. Four million is a huge amount of money that could be better spent elsewhere. I’m genuinely not sure if the risk is worth it. We’re buying potential as it is, nothing more. Not even sure he’ll walk into the team without making him our second highest buy! Loads of potential that I think he’ll achieve in time, but it is still a gamble. If needs be maybe we will have to bite the bullet, but right now let’s get the best value for money possible.

I’ve tried to keep calm this window but this is getting worrying now. It’s not just us this time though. A lot of clubs are struggling because the premier league has gone insane with these fees. God knows where Everton are getting all this cash from.

Wish we’d just lined up decent deals for proven quality before the summer like Andrew Robertson. They would’ve done the job.

If Jacob Murphy is our top target I’m concerned. Talented lad with potential but we need a proven winger.

    Bobby,
The lad is only 19, if influential people want him to sign elsewhere they can be very persuasive, Andy Carroll by all accounts didn’t want to move. Not saying we should go in with the highest offer but we have been bitten before from too much haggling.

Macas, I agree, Cabaye put in some poor displays. He was still a player worth in around the 80k a week bracket. I am sure there were plenty of clubs willing to pay him that, the sticking point being the transfer fee. The last I heard he was Palace’s highest earner, that may have changed with the arrival of Benteke though.

Despite the wins there were some seriously average performances from all of them that year, some of poor Willo’s games were bordering on comical. Do you remember that Norwich game where the ground fell silent as he tried to dribble round four of their players in OUR 18 yard box 😮

Has anybody even suggested Murphy is our top target? Have I missed something there? If he was we’d pay the extra, but he’s potential, nowt more than that. Just the second – hopefully – of a few signings. Which is why I think we should get a good deal on him.
No problem with add-ons like – if he proves to be a huge success then he’ll be worth it in the long run.

Im not sure what the panic is. Weve already made 6 major signings:
    -Atsu
    -Lejune
    -Dummet
    -Lac
    -Everton reject
    -Arsenal reject

Sure its technically only one new player, but that has to be enough to keep us out of a relegation battle. People forget that dummet was one of the best LBs in the league two years ago so there is no need to get a replacement for him. They also forget how well we played when shelvey was out. Instead of getting in a CAM, Charley is prioritizing wingers. Who knows, if theres a team out there willing to sell us someone at a 30% discount we might even sign someone. Cheer up guys!

It does not seem like a striker is going to be signed this summer. It may be a good idea just to keep Daryl Murphy until that situation changes. Usually when the club is in the market for a forward, the club is linked with an abundance of names. There is a worrying lack of a links to forwards since the window opened.

So, by that logic, cabaye was LITERALLY paying someone 80k a week, but only earning 40k, so his bank account acctually DECREASED by 40k every week.
Who was he paying all this money to?

Can’t add much to what has already been said about Murphy other than in the recent U21 world cup games he seemed to be played as an attacking right mid field player rather than an out an out winger.

First time I’d seen him but he definitely made me think, wow I’d love us to sign him, work rate, speed and skill he has it all.
