Newcastle May Be In With A Chance To Sign Uruguayan International Striker

Bordeaux coach Jocelyn Gourvennec has said that his 24 year-old Uruguayan International striker Diego Rolan traveled to England yesterday to complete a transfer to an English club.

The question is which club is that – with news yesterday the club that had been in the lead to sign him – Fulham – had still top agree on a deal for the 24 year-old.

Another piece of news that has surfaced is that Diego may not be too keen to ply his trade in the Championship and therefore if Newcastle are indeed interested in signing the striker there’s still an opportunity for the Magpies to sign him.

24 year-old Uruguayan International striker Diego Rolan – plays for Bordeaux
Looks like he’s waiting for a call from Rafa

L’Equipe are reporting the player is still hesitant to sign for Fulham – maybe because they are in England’s second division, even though they are expected to be a promotion candidate in the coming season, having beaten us twice last season.

🙁

Rolan would come at a low price of €7M which is around £6.1M.

The question is whether he is good enough for Rafa’s Newcastle side, although he has been linked with Newcastle now for over two years.

His manager Gourvennec said this yesterday:

“Rolan traveled to London today, had a second meeting.”

Rolan was also in London on Tuesday to meet with Fulham, but no agreement was reached – so if Rafa Benitez is really interested in this player there’s a chance we could still move aggressively to sign him.

The likelihood, however, is that Diego Rolan is ready to sign for Fulham since Gourvennec said it was for a second meeting – and therefore most likely with Fulham.

Diego moved to Bordeaux from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting in Montevideo four years ago last January and he has a decent goalscoring record in France.

Last season he scored 10 goals in 34 games in all competitions and in the four and a half seasons he’s been at the French club he has scored 39 goals in 149 games with 13 assists which is fairly average in the French League we suppose.

Rolan’s biggest strength seems to be his versatility, but he can also score goals and he’s a decent enough footballer who made his debut for Uruguay back in September of 2014 in a friendly win against Japan and has 23 caps with 4 goals.

Rolan has only one year left on his contract and could become a free agent next summer, but Fulham most likely is where is his final destination will be.

But you never know and if indeed Lee Charnley and company are working around the clock to get new players in – which we assume is what they are doing – there’s a possibility we could sign him.

We’ll know soon enough.

What do you think?

Lindisfarne – for me that’s easy the 70m now and 70m in January. That is 40m more than the full 100m in summer only. With more money you can definitely improve the squad with much more ease. More money is always better and in January you can see how the team has done in the first half and assess things again then and decide what is needed for the second half of the season.

Wasn’t Diego Rolan one of Carr’s scouted players? Are we really after him? Don’t know much about him tbh.

Kc, of course there would be a bidding war for Hernandez. Release clause is only half of the battle…

Talking about goalkeepers, is anybody watching this star sixes football? Got to say that Calamity James’ reactions are still super sharp. Just pulled off a couple of superb saves that any PL keeper would be proud of!

Gayle had a cracking first half to the season last year, he won’t get the time or space in behind this season. His goal return is as modest as Mitro in PL, why do ppl think it would be any different this year?

2nd half of the season he had injuries, not to and Murphy came in and did well, gave us another dimension, even when Gayle started and struggled. Goalkeepers will not be gifting our no9 goals like Rob green did.

Hernandez is a no brainer really but he is a massive upgrade on Gayle, if he’s a replacement for anyone then it would be for Gayle as they are similar type of players but Hernandez has a lot more quality

Ancient – Thats why I said offer him exactly what he wants before someone else does, if not then it becomes a bidding war if someone matches it, then its his choice. We are 33/1 to sign him anyway, West Ham are 4/6 so he isnt coming to Newcastle so onto the next….

As for Rolan from what ive seen he’s no better than Rivierre so definately one to avoid.

I still think we should be looking at Danny Welbeck or Batshuayi.

i also think rolan was carr’s target..
as for hernandez..hes a good striker..we all agree on that..but hes too similar to gayle (small fox in the box).. i think rafa will go after big, strong CF (assuming mitro will be sold)..

Rafa has never liked big and strong forwards, he’s always liked smaller quicker ones. I’d be surprised if he did go to a bigger fella now that we are out of championship

kc2012, I agree on signing Hernandez. I am just stating why the club would never sign him. Charnley would run a mile from a negotiation that involved bidding against West Ham… even if he was allowed to splurge a large portion of the kitty on a 29 year old.

Batshuayi would be a great addition – especially if we play him in a similar role as Suarez at Liverpool – fast, knows where the goal is and cant get a start for Chlesea.

Jane, so Champions League no longer important to Le Sulk then? What a tool. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him go to China because to me, he seems very money orientated – or his advisors anyway.
A fine lesson of careful what you wish for imo.

Crying shame big Andy Carroll has such a problem with injuries, he would’ve gone down as one of England’s greats otherwise. Totally unplayable at times and far better with his feet then he gets credit for. Just as he starts banging them in, he’s out for six or seven games with not even serious injuries. Seems reluctant to play through any pain barrier.

Things are going very strange- we’re competing with Fulham for an average player and it seems to be entirely possible that he’ll choose Fulham ahead of us.

    What?!?

Sissoko waived his signing on fee to sign earlier for Newcastle. I think he is more ambition orientated than overly money obsessed. Waiving his signing on fee would have been worth a substantial amount. Reminds me of Arteta taking a £10,000 pay cut to join Arsenal from Everton.

We can but hope that clubs are queuing up to buy Sissoko. If Sperz get any less than the £25m or whatever they committed to pay us and they have to stump up what’s left owing to us, he’ll have been a very expensive flop for them. Hey ho 🙂

Tottenham still owe the club £18 million for Sissoko. I am curious if Tottenham would take £18 million for Sissoko this summer. They could write off their loss and end the whole fiasco. Levy will not want Sissoko hanging around as a reminder I can imagine lol.

I knew that about a second after posting it but too late to retract it. Deserves the bad publicity anyway the muppet. Although the money was gratefully received from Spurs, so he did us some good to make up for some god-awful lacklustre performances.

Spurs have agreed to pay for sissoko in installments, even if sold we wouldnt get the cash as it would carry on being paid in installments. The only time spurs would have to pay the whole amount is if they actually wanted to not pay monthly anymore and wanted to settle the debt. Given that they are building a new stadium the likelihood of that is very slim to none.

As bad as sissoko was for us and he under performed a lot, rafa must have seen something in him as he rated him. Add to that the season we went down sissoko played RB, LB, CM, RW, LW. Granted he wasn’t good and hasn’t been for spurs but he did play where ever he was asked to do so. Showed he had some professional qualities at least

35 million for him was mental.

His 6 mill per installments help the wage bill

    I wish him well
Hopefully somewhere we never hear about him again.

The club won’t ever tell us about links, we make a bid for Murphy we always find out via media first. A lot of players we’ve been linked with are probably bollocks but Lejeune for example was spot on.

I normally look at it as if we are linked with a player no more than twice and there’s a gap between links then it’s bollocks. If it’s repeated links which have some kind of substance I’ll believe it. Rolan I believe is an old rehashed link
