Bordeaux coach Jocelyn Gourvennec has said that his 24 year-old Uruguayan International striker Diego Rolan traveled to England yesterday to complete a transfer to an English club.
The question is which club is that – with news yesterday the club that had been in the lead to sign him – Fulham – had still top agree on a deal for the 24 year-old.
Another piece of news that has surfaced is that Diego may not be too keen to ply his trade in the Championship and therefore if Newcastle are indeed interested in signing the striker there’s still an opportunity for the Magpies to sign him.
24 year-old Uruguayan International striker Diego Rolan – plays for Bordeaux
Looks like he’s waiting for a call from Rafa
L’Equipe are reporting the player is still hesitant to sign for Fulham – maybe because they are in England’s second division, even though they are expected to be a promotion candidate in the coming season, having beaten us twice last season.
🙁
Rolan would come at a low price of €7M which is around £6.1M.
The question is whether he is good enough for Rafa’s Newcastle side, although he has been linked with Newcastle now for over two years.
His manager Gourvennec said this yesterday:
“Rolan traveled to London today, had a second meeting.”
Rolan was also in London on Tuesday to meet with Fulham, but no agreement was reached – so if Rafa Benitez is really interested in this player there’s a chance we could still move aggressively to sign him.
The likelihood, however, is that Diego Rolan is ready to sign for Fulham since Gourvennec said it was for a second meeting – and therefore most likely with Fulham.
Diego moved to Bordeaux from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting in Montevideo four years ago last January and he has a decent goalscoring record in France.
Last season he scored 10 goals in 34 games in all competitions and in the four and a half seasons he’s been at the French club he has scored 39 goals in 149 games with 13 assists which is fairly average in the French League we suppose.
Rolan’s biggest strength seems to be his versatility, but he can also score goals and he’s a decent enough footballer who made his debut for Uruguay back in September of 2014 in a friendly win against Japan and has 23 caps with 4 goals.
Rolan has only one year left on his contract and could become a free agent next summer, but Fulham most likely is where is his final destination will be.
But you never know and if indeed Lee Charnley and company are working around the clock to get new players in – which we assume is what they are doing – there’s a possibility we could sign him.
We’ll know soon enough.
What do you think?

Comment #82I still expect another 2 signings after Murphy and feel that they will be about 17 m and 22m these two will be a striker and a defence midfielder. Can’t see much more except Gibbs from arsenal although not convinced about him, no other clubs are knocking down doors for him, something amiss about him. Left backs are always highly sought after.
I think we are at stand off for the Greek fellow but have a feeling he is still in the mix. The striker, God knows but would expect him to be our most expensive purchase.
Could be a load of bollocks,

I could be wrong but there were loads of things hidden, the bank loans were mainly for the stadium work, debts included things such as private cars etc. I’m pretty certain transfers were also part of the debt. Hence why Ashley went down the root of paying upfront for players

Comment #84Like I say I could be wrong, will have to go through the old accounts which I can’t be bothered to do.
Anyway hopefully we have a new signing on board on Monday as the weirdly we can’t do deals at the weekend

Comment #85Yeah, I think we’ll see significant signings in key positions at striker and in central midfield, along with an upgrade on the wing. Minimum of three quality additions, and up to two more, likely in goal and possibly a fullback, although I think we aren’t too bad there. It’d be nuts for a big club like Newcastle, with such a good manager finally in place, not do at least that to guarantee our place in the top flight, particularly now and with so much money at stake. To not, would be be beyond Ashleyesque, so to speak.

Comment #89Think Rafa still wants a keeper: someone with loads of experience at the highest level, to mentor Woodman. We need cover for Shelvey and a DM to compete with or backup Hayden (unless Rafa decides to keep Colback). Think we will be OK at winger if Aaron’s stays fit and they get Murphy deal across the line. A striker to replace D Murphy, who I assume will be sold. But the biggest need we have for my money is a solid #10. DeJong looked good but with his injury history would anyone bank on his availability in more than a handful of games? Neither Diame or Ayoze look comfortable in the 10 spot. Both don’t really seem to fit any one position very well….would look to sell. Could use 2 FBs if we can sell Haidara, Lazar and Gamez (2 of the 3?)
So still lots of work for Charnley and Co to do!

Comment #90I think that Murphy is a bit more than an out and out winger, In the U21 games he looked to be more of an attacking midfielder/RB. I think we’re getting more than we might be hoping for.
The squad list is interesting, bit surprised not to see Saivet on it, he could easily be next seasons Gouffron, that is one who is being written off by a lot of bloggers, but one who actually does a very good job for us.
Hope the lads are enjoying the Guinness but not too much perhaps.
I’d love to see AC back with us even if we only got half a season out of him, but that just aint going to happen.

I think owens payment plan was linked to the shirt sponsers payments for the next 3 years.
So he payed 25 mill plus whatever we owed for owen
He did not do the normal checks before buying us and we cost him more than he expected.
Maybe thats what this barnes bloke does for him now ?
Once bitten twice shy.

Comment #94Owen was a complete disaster for us, at the time I thought he was a great signing as we were spending big bucks on a big name which was a statement of intent by Mr Sheppard. Turned out to be a total flop as he spent so much time in the treatment room and in truth didn’t seem to have anything other than a retirement package on his mind.
I do think the cautious approach to signings may well be a wise approach although I’m screaming get your finger out Mike!!!

Not sure about Saivet at all. There was an article link posted a day or two ago where his manager at Etiene last season basically said that since he had signed the contract with NUFC that he, the manager, did not think Saivet was working hard any longer….just coasting.

Yes, but he’s probably like many other players who if they feel they aren’t appreciated not will not bother to put the effort in.
I think that Saivet if Rafa gives him some good support might just be one who turns into a swan.

It would be great if Rafa can get Saivet to graft and get him playing well. I used to whine on about how bad Gouffran was in the 2 years prior to Rafa arriving. But he surprised me and lots of others, so if a player is willing to work, then Rafa will get them playing at or near their best.

It’s easy to write players off from our comfy supporters armchairs, but someone must have seen something in them initially.
In the right coaching hands, what look like sows ear may well be silk purses just awaiting the moment of metamorphosis, I’m looking forward to next season even with our present squad.
Please excuse the prose, as I said there is a strong night cap influence.

Comment #103So I was away on vacation for a few weeks and notice when I returned that nobody on the blog is using the heart/like feature on comments. Was that something that blog members agreed to abandon? Or did that blog software feature die on its own? Must say I did not like that feature much….
Also nice to see the comments now being numbered, for easier reference! 🙂

Comment #105I do agree wholeheartedly Demba Ba was the best striker we’ve had since Alan
Shearer. Was a joy to watch on his days here, along with Pappis Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa, with some mezmerizing goals.
