The Sun is reporting today that Rafa Benitez has been talking to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp about a possible permanent deal for the Reds 20 year-old impressive winger Sheyi Ojo.
The report is that Newcastle are willing to offer £10M for the player, after Newcastle were unable to get a loan deal arranged for the season.
It sounds like really good news for Newcastle because Ojo will now miss the Liverpool trip to the Far East so he can discuss the possible move to Newcastle.
20 year-old Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo
Maybe this is the breakthrough we have been looking for?
It’s been a long drawn out affair with the 20 year-old as both Newcastle and Middlesbrough have been trying to get him on loan for the season and at one point it looked like he would join the Smoggies.
If this news in the Sun is accurate it says we have a chance of signing the player outright, which is what Rafa has wanted to do all along and he would be a great signing for us.
The fact that he has been left behind by Klopp also suggests that Liverpool are interested in the possible deal so maybe the German manager has had a change of heart and is now willing to sell his young winger?
Rafa tried to sign Ojo in January and he was also interested in getting him last summer if Newcastle hadn’t been relegated.
Ojo was born in Hemel Hempstead and joined the MK Dons’ Academy when he was just 10 years old.
He showed how precocious he was at a young age and by the time he was just 13, he had already played for the Dons’ U18 side and was even training with the first team squad.
Ojo then joined Liverpool as a 14-year-old for a sizable fee of £2M and even then there were some other big clubs after the winger, with Chelsea one of the clubs who missed out on him.
Ojo came through the famous Liverpool Academy and made his debut for the Reds in January of last year.
He has so far played 13 times with one goal for the Liverpool first team but made only two appearances for the club last season.
It looks like Jurgen Klopp is also willing to accept the £10M offer from Newcastle so let’s hope Rafa persuasive powers can help get the deal done.
Ojo’s signing on a permanent basis would be little short of a coup for Newcastle – let’s hope it happens and happens soon too.
