Newcastle In For 23 Year-Old International Left Back with £17.6M Release Clause

This could be a breakthrough transfer day for Newcastle with both Jacob Murphy of Norwich and Atletico Madrid right back Javier Manquillo, who played on loan at Sunderland last season during their relegation season, both having medicals in Dublin with a view to signing for Newcastle United.

A number of fans are questioning Javier’s performances for Sunderland last season, but we have to remember Ciaran Clark had a poor relegation season with Aston Villa yet he was completely outstanding for us last season after Rafa signed him for only£5M last summer.

We will trust Rafa’s judgment on Javier who played over 20 times for the Liverpool first team in the previous sedans so he cannot be that bad.

23 year-old Real Betis Danish International left-back Riza Durmesi

He’s also played for every single Spanish youth side including 7 times for the Spanish U21 side and with Rafa’s many contacts he will know all about this player.

And the latest news coming from Calcio Mercato out of Italy is that Newcastle are linked with 23 year-old Real Betis full-back Riza Durmesi.

Durmesi was born in Ishøj, Denmark and he currently has 15 caps for Denmark.

He is quite small at 5ft 6 ins – the same height as former right-back Vurnon Anita – but he has played for all the Denmark youth sides.

It was only last summer that Riza penned a five-year contract with the La Liga club who paid his €2M release clause in his previous Brondby contract.

In his Real Betis contract they have inserted a buyout clause of €20M (£17.6M) so best of luck at getting any club to pay that for the Dane.

However, there was news in January that Liverpool were thinking of activating the player’s release clause of €20M, so he must be a fairly good player if Liverpool were thinking of paying that much for him.

The report claims the Magpies are preparing a bid of around €10M (£8.8M) for the 23 year-old and that could be our first bid in attempting to sign this young left back.

What do you think?

Yes, we need a LB and presumably Rafa’s got the wheels in motion to bring one in along with the striker we desperately need.

    Bobby.

A thought to ponder: Rafa was clearly frustrated at the time it took to bring our first two signings in and it seems to have taken his reported nudge at Ashley to make progress on Jacob Murphy. Since then, things seem to be moving at some pace and Rafa and Charnley appear to be getting on with things.

Now, I wonder whether it was Barnes, Ashley’s henchman, who was the cause of delays and Rafa’s nudge prompted Ashley to tell him to give Rafa his head? If that was the case, we can only speculate what would have prompted Barnes to want Charnley to run transfers past him before progressing deals? Barnes wouldn’t do that off his own bat or would he?

As I said, just a thought.

Sorry, mate, but i’m not sure how signing a rb and a lb means 5 at the back? we required back up for yedlin, and since everyone wants to kill dummet, we’d need a LB as well.

I look down on all moaners who are currently having a go at Javier, just because he played for the scum. As Ed stated Clark was the brunt of some of the bloggers wrath as was yedders, look how they turned out. We are blessed with a world class manager for that I’m grateful we have someone who looks at potential players and thinks I can make him a better player I will have him, not like pardue or mcclaren who couldn’t spot a potential star if they poked them in the eye.
I can recall even being linked to a Atletic Madrid or a Real Betis player would set the heart racing. I’m over the moon with the way things are going. So to all you doom and gloom merchants, begone and don’t darken our step again.
Don’t have a moan at this guys height, John Bereford was not that much taller and he was a great left back. Now KK could spot a player.

Well we desperately need a LB so if Rafa likes him then it sounds good- VERY wary and unsure about Manquillo though, he is frankly terrible.

It’s a new ploy. Make them play on loan doon the road for a season, then offer them a chance at the Mighty Toon. If they are not performing, you have the perfect motivation – back to them doon there, if you don’t pull your finger oot! Beats the threat of a thwacking!

Lesh, why speculate at all? Why not just take Rafa on his word that he’s in charge of transfers mate? Barnes has nothing to do with transfers, he’s there to tidy up the loose ends for a potential sale or investment deal.
Rafa’s explained the situation and he’s been given X amount of money to spend how he sees fit. No ifs or maybes or other involvements.
Penfold deserves some kudos for winning the haggling and got both at a good price. Why look for problems that simply don’t exist?
I know it’s hard to accept that maybe at long last Ashley’s finally getting it right, but in fairness, he’s took a bloody long time about it, so it’s about time too!
Just enjoy the change, but by all means stay cautious, I get that much.
Rafa’s the gaffer!!! 🙂 Things are looking up and who knows? Maybe a leopard can wear stripy pyjamas after all. 🙂

If you look at most full backs now, they are more forward orientated. A full back who rarely crosses half way gets blasted for being no good these days. I believe it is this that gave rise to the 4231 formation. You need two deeper mfs to cover errant full backs. I just think signing players like these reinforces the idea that Rafa is going to stick to 4231 next season. I’ll put my hands up if i’m wrong.

@glimps – did you not see him play for Liverpool and then Sunderland?

I remember one time he hit a 5 yard pass straight off the pitch and another time when he had the ball stuck under his feet for 10 seconds bumbling around because he couldn’t get it under control.

He was another poor Rodgers signing who gets a go at another club simply because he played for Liverpool. Just like so many similar stories before him in this league.

    I hope I’m proven wrong.

2 lightning quick full backs was in reference to Yedlin on the right and Manquillo on the left. Dummet is fine once he gets into his stride but poor acceleration, thats why he struggles with the players with short bursts of pace. I can’t see Rafa playing both Yedlin and Manquillo at the same time any way we’d have no defense.

If there’s no controversy there’s no harm in stirring one up eh, Oldgit? Hardly a tidal wave of I’ll feeling over Manquillo, just understandable reservation . Give us a break.

I hope the lad is workable clay in Benitez hands, understandable if he got bogged down in the faecal mire that was the mackem mob last season. Mind if he’s rubbish, his name pronounces unfortunately – Manky – oh. 😐

Can’t say I know much on either this guy or Manquillo. Didn’t see Sunderland much last year, and can’t remember him at all from Liverpool. Not sure it necessarily leads to 5 at the back, is it a 541 we are looking at, or a 532/343?

If it is a 343, then the front 3 looks a complex selection between Perez, Ritchie, Mitro, Gayle, Aarons, Murphy, De Jong, Atsu – potentially Ojo as well. It wouldn’t suit Gayle as it would require a focal point that he doesn’t really provide. Also, Ritchie is more likely a wing back in this style.

If it is 5 at the back, then the wing backs should either be closer to full backs, or the midfield 4 is more of a central grouping which makes Murphy, Ojo, and Atsu odd choices as signings. Potentially a 541 could start with wide men, but using inverted wingers who cut inside to create space and move the wide defenders out of position. The 541 will offer us a more solid base in certain games, and can be an exciting formation offensively when used in certain ways.

Gives us good options of styles and transitions within play, although this has never been a hallmark of Rafa’s style.

Slating the quality of English youth football is now racism. Holy Jesus the liberal left is rife here. We’re goosed for sure if you’re the most intelligent fan this club can muster up. Shite squad with zero pace and no real quality. Slow build up. No goal scorer. Weak defence. The list of negatives go on.
