There’s news coming out of Spain today that Newcastle are very close to signing Atletico Madrid right-back Javier Manquillo and this could be the second time in two summers we have signed an Atletico full-back after signing Jesus Gamez last summer.
The interesting thing is that the 23 year-old was on loan at Sunderland last season where he played 22 times with one goal so if Rafa was interested in him at that time he could have easily checked on him.
The report is in Mundo Deportivo which is even saying that Javier will sign for three seasons and the report is that Rafa Benitez has been key in signing the player and that he is not part of Atletico’s future plans.
Javier Manquillo while on loan at Liverpool the season before last
In the last three years he’s had loan spells at Liverpool (19 appearances), Marseille (43 appearances) and Sunderland and has played quite a few first team games while on loan – 84 appearances over the last three.
He has made 17 appearances for Atletico after making his debut in December 2011 when he started in a 2-1 away loss to Albacete Balompie in the Copa del Rey.
This is no information on how much he would cost.
Javier has played for all the Spanish Youth sides including 7 times for the Spanish U21 side who this lad has been a good player for a while now.
Rafa will know all about the player and the fact that he has played for Sunderland shouldn’t cause Rafa not to sign him.
He looks a very decent full back but not too much on how much he would cost with the youngster having just one year left on his contract at the home town club he’s been with since way back in 2007.
If the Spanish report is to be believed he should be in Dublin soon to take a medical and agree on compensation and sign on the dotted line for Newcastle.
