Striker Target Would Simply Jump At Chance To Join Newcastle United

Newcastle United have had 24 year-old Bordeaux striker and Uruguay international Diego Rolan as a transfer target for over two years and there is news today that Newcastle may now try to sign the player for a reasonable £5M.

One of the doubts we had with Diego was whether he is good enough for Newcastle because he’s not exactly a prolific goalscorer.

But he looks a good player and if Rafa signs him we have to think he can get the best out of him and that the Spaniard sees something in him that is good for the Newcastle team.

Diego is keen to move to England and it seems he has delayed signing for Fulham, hoping that a Premier League club would come along and it wouldn’t surprise us if his agents had contacted Newcastle.

Diego Rolan – in Uruguayan colors

The Chronicle is now reporting that Rafa Benitez is interested in signing the Uruguayan and for his skills he comes cheap at just£5M and Newcastle must sign some players on the cheap this summer if Rafa wants eight players brought into the first team squad.

We wrote recently how Diego held two meetings in London last week with Fulham, but was undecided whether to join the Cottagers.

Diego moved to Bordeaux from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting in Montevideo four years ago last January and he has a decent goalscoring record in France.

Last season he scored 10 goals in 34 games in all competitions and in the four and a half seasons he’s been at the French club he has scored 39 goals in 149 games with 13 assists which is fairly average in the French League.

Rolan’s biggest strength seems to be his versatility, but he can also score goals and he’s a decent enough footballer who made his debut for Uruguay back in September of 2014 in a friendly win against Japan and he now has 23 caps with 4 goals.

Rolan has only one year left on his contract at Bordeaux and could become a free agent next summer, but Fulham have been in the lead to sign the player.

If Newcastle moved for him we think he would simply jump at the chance to join Newcastle United and that’s what we want – players who want to come to Newcastle and prove themselves.

£5M is not a big risk and if Rafa wants him – sign him up!

What do you think?

Rotonda I hear you but as I said, my Spanish friends have lived and worked here for many years and although fluent they still come out with phrases that aren’t wrong, just not expressed the same way a natural English speaker would. If Rafa is clever as we all suspect, he would know better than to publicly goad his wage payer with an ultimatum.

Apparently although Liverpool & Fulham have reached a loan agreement it is up to Ojo himself to decide between NUFC, Boro & Fulham!

On topic Rolan doesn’t sound any better than we’ve got in Murphy & Mitro (and Gayle of course) so why bother – may as well keep Murphy (the first one 🙂 ).

Sounds like another gouffran. Premier league wasn’t his level as we all know.

Rivi had similar stats and look how he’s done, that was £6million wasted. I don’t think he’s going to be an improvement to our squad

Why do we need ojo, now? He has missed his chance to join us imo. We have enough wingers, now.

    On Rolan
Uruguay consider him good enough to be back up to Luis Suarez.
Uruguayan strkers tend to be a bit special ,Cavani ,Forlan, Abreu, Hernandez
Half of what we paid for Gayle , a player who has played 20 WC qualifying games,
    it’s a no brainer.

    Reina is definitely leaving Napoli
Man City have jumped in with a cheeky £2.6 m bid
It’s basically does big Pepe want to be 2nd string to Ederson (he’ll be on on big dosh btw)
    OR
The Toon’s numero Uno (in every way)

If Rolan came in he’d be welcome but from the few games ive seen of him he hasnt really done much. Stats arent the best either but he would probably score more goals in a better team than Bordeaux. He does score some quality goals and isnt scared to run at people by the looks of it. £5m isnt too much of a risk and actually think he’s worth more than that based on ability so probs worth it. Still think Batshuayi or Andre Gray would be better options though. Link to some of his highlights.
