Newcastle In Danger Of Losing Out On Talented Young Defensive Target

There was a report in the Mail yesterday that Frank de Boer’s Crystal Palace have made a £16M bid for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, who has been linked with a move to Newcastle this summer.

But with Newcastle signing 23 year-old right back Javier Manquillo today from Atletico Madrid that would seem to lessen the chances that Rafa will also go after Chambers, unless he sees him as a centre-back or utility defender.

While we have been linked a quite a lot with Calum this summer it could be his fee is too high for Newcastle who have only limited funds this summer.

22 year-old Arsenal utility defender Calum Chambers

But certainly, we should still be able to afford £16M for such a good young player as Chambers.

Rafa could turn this lad into a top footballer if he does sign him for Newcastle.

But Newcastle will need to decide soon if they want to sign Calum Chambers because with the Crystal Palace offer submitted yesterday a deal could be wrapped up quickly by the London club.

Newcastle have brought in Florian Lejeune and also Javier Manquillo at the end of today – and we do need at least one and maybe two defenders still signed this summer.

We have been linked with Real Betis left back Riza Durmesi yesterday and we have reportedly put in a bid of £8.8M for him

Calum is a very good young player who came through Southampton’s Youth Academy before signing on at Arsenal for around £13M three years ago,

He turned 22 years old in January and he’s made 23 total appearances for Middlesbrough on loan this season.

Chambers is a versatile player who can play at right back or center-back and if Rafa is interested he obviously thinks he can improve the 3 times capped England International.

Certainly, Calum is a classy young player and should have a great future ahead of him in the game.

He joined Southampton at the age of seven back in 2002 and came through their famous Youth Academy and eventually played 25 times for the Saints first team before moving to Arsenal in the summer of 2014.

In the two seasons he was at Arsenal vying for a first team place, he played 58 times for them before moving on loan to Middlesbrough last summer for the season.

He made his debut for England against Norway back in September 2104 when England won 1–0 at Wembley Stadium.

We would be very happy is Newcastle can sign Calum Chambers this summer but there may be other priorities for Rafa to spend the big bucks – like to buy a top striker and a top playmaker for example.

What do you think?

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley wants £150,000 a week to join Tottenham and the Toffees are demanding £50m for the 23-year-old. (Daily Mirror)

Phew, now we can reduce the list of linked players by -1

I can’t help thinking we will still bring in one surprise quality player. So far Rafa has gone with potential to save money.

FFS, it was ages ago we were linked with chambers! It’s hardly “missing out” if we didn’t decide to approach him after all this time. Just stop, please, with the sensationalism, Ed. I respect and mostly enjoy what you provide for us on your blog, but this is just falling into the media’s trap of circulating non-stories for them.

the last couple of days have proved that if we are ACTUALLY interested in a player, a bid will go in very quickly.

    16 million for a defender – not a chance!
If we’re spending that sort of money, it will be for a midfielder, No.10 or striker.

Mark, I think the “missing out” is just journo speak for he’s available so link him with every team who need defensive reinforcements or who we’ve already linked as a possible destination

Jamaal Lascelles in his interview with Sky yesterday inferred that with the signing of Manquillo that the defence is sortd at NUFC now.
    He’s probably right
We have in no particular order:-
    Lascelles
    Clark
    Lejeune
    M’Bemba
    Hanley
    Haidara
    Yedlin
    Gamez
    Manquillo
    Dummett
    Sterry
    Lazaar
    Findley
    Good

Their might be PL experience in the team but it’s basically a championship team at best with a few standout players…

…those bought so far does not raise the standard as I see it…the status quo is maintained.

I had hoped Rafa had aspired to more…I wonder if any of these players were identified before the summer as targets….somehow I hardly doubt they were our first or second choice.

Lilongwe…as far as I remember I never said anything about wanting PL experience before quality…I believe I said I wanted proven quality? Feel free to correct me if I forgot to mention that.

Some people are excited about this current plan and players coming in…others are not.

Seen Peter Beardo saying that he had 2 teams playing for the stiffs the other night. 1 team in each half and another 8 to add in. It’s got to be the long-term policy that some of the youngsters make the first team. Good to see some getting into the Ireland squad trip, so they give the others hope.

I bloody hope so toontaff2, most of them are not what we need, and of the rest ….they’re overpriced, under talented or loans with no option to buy.
Organic growth, apparently Bony may be available ,either on loan or to buy….never really made it at city but is a definite Mitro upgrade.

JIB, Rafa will certainly need to shift a few, if we’re bringing in many more defenders! Unless we’re playing the mackem 8-1-1 system. 👿

    What price this article now:-

Was it to sell his slow moving book (which Bobby says is a good read) ?
    Prompted by Rafa ?
    Actually true ?
    or
Just to earn a £1500 fee for his summer hols ?

    BOBBY B

with regard to your post at 146, 3 threads back.

After your desperate pleas for peace with your numerous foes on the blog, I decided to ignore your daily “rants and essays” but it would seem you are back to your antagonistic self.

Suffjce to say, if you want open warfare, then I am more than happy to reciprocate.

But do us all a favour. After having started up a row, dont go hiding behind your usual crap of only wanting to talk football because it clearly isnt true and doesnt impress people.

The ball is in your court now. You started it up again…..you decide where it goes feom here.

I assume you are talking about Hardy’s book and recent newspaper article.

I have read all 3 of his books.

Touching Distance…….I couldnt put down. It was full of players interviews from the Keegan days and a great read.

Tunnell of Love……was good but the content of jnterviews wasnt as good as Touching Distance .

I am gslf way through Rafas Way and find it unremarkable

This emphasis of Rafa on pace in the Newcastle team this coming season bodes well for Siem de Jong.

I thought in previous seasons when we saw him (rarely) in the League that he always tried to do too much in an effort to impress.

With lots of willing youngsters prepared to run their socks off , on his behalf , he should get more time and space to use his most valuable asset – his headpiece.

Manquillo doesn’t make sense on the face of it……….. to me that is. Rafa has his reason and we should defer to him until proven otherwise.

Just don’t see how Manquillo is anything other than a side-step from Anita who seemed to find his niche as a steady RB when needed.

Manquillo couldn’t get into one of the worst defences the PL has ever seen.

    We shall see.
