The Liverpool Echo are reporting that Everton have had a bid in excess of £6M accepted by Newcastle for our highly-rated defender Lewis Gibson.
Newcastle fans will be asking why on earth are we letting one of the top young players in England leave the club but there’s really nothing Newcastle can do about it.
Lewis is on an Academy scholarship and has not signed any professional forms at Newcastle and he can leave at any time.
17 year-old Newcastle defender Lewis Gibson
Being a local lad from Stanley, County Durham we had hoped he would want to stay at Newcastle but that doesn’t look like it’s the case.
We wonder if Newcastle have a counter offer to Everton’s?
Lewis turned 17 only yesterday but Tottenham are also interested in signing Lewis so we may see a bid coming in from Spurs.
But the north London side will need to move quickly since Everton have been after the player for several weeks and now and looks to tie up the deal.
Certainly, Everton seem to be willing to spend big money on both their transfer targets for the first team and also on top young players in the new era of Ronald Koeman as the manager of the Toffees.
Gibson will go straight into the Everton U23 group should he sign for Everton so they rate him extremely highly.
It would be interesting to know what Rafa Benitez thinks of this situation.
Lewis is the younger brother of Liam Gibson who is also on the Newcastle books – as a professional.
What do you think about this?

Comment #1Pepe Reina is still ducking and diving and not signing an extension to his contract at Napoli.
Salvatore Lavino the author of the following link suggested in late June that an exchange for Krul could be on the cards.
Krul didn’t go to Ireland !?!?

Comment #2Everton have a record of grooming young defnders and making pots of money.
They bought a 19 year old John Stones from Barnsley for £3m in 2013 and sold him 3 years later for £50m (with add ons) to Man City.
Nice work if you can get it.
They just have to point that case history to young Gibson to get him drooling.

Comment #3Assume, then, that Lewis has been offered a contract by Newcastle at some stage, and he turned it down?

He turned 17 yesterday
Until then he was on a scholarship with NUFC (no contract)
In the last year of a scholarship a young player can please himself where he goes.

Comment #5You should just leave it Jib. You are just embarrassing yourself. And as for me “not knowing anything about the club”, I believe you were the one on here the other day suggesting that there was nothing in this because the older brother Liam was actually the player everyone was interested in. Oh dear.

Even if he just gets 1% of his fee (and he’ll probs get more)
He’ll have enough to buy himself a nice new Mercedes

Comment #7Sadly the lad wants, for whatever reason, to move on and if it is to Everton they seem to be the winners in this instance. £6m seems scant reward but on the other hand if the lad does not develop as expected then it may seem like robery. Perhaps Newcastle United should set up a camp in Liverpool and “Cream of some of the Talent that’s heading for Everton (or Liverpool come to that!)” It certainly leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Maybe the lad is a Mackem and that’s why he’s showing no loyalty to NUFC.

Comment #8Why expect any Newcastle youths to show any loyalty to the club when we never show any to them? No chance given, sending out on loans year in and out, letting them rot in reserves, then release on the free? Our club is a joke.

Comment #11Agree with Constantine @ #8 – we never seem to develop players through into the first team here, we have Arma who is on loan again this year and may come good but cant think of the last player to get a chance in the first 11 and take it really. There has been Sammy Ameobi but i don’t think he was ever good enough and before that maybe big AndyC – but would he have been given as big of a chance if we hadn’t been relegated – i’m not so sure.
We need to improve this aspect of the club and as far as i know we are taking steps but we’ll be playing catch up to teams for a time to come yet
