Our fourth signing of the summer was unveiled today with 23-year-old Javier Manquillo signing and Rafa was clear this morning to point out the Spanish U21 International can play in either full back position.
But with both Achraf Lazaar and Massadio Haidara expected to leave Newcastle this summer we still think that Rafa will want to bring a specialized left back in to challenge local lad Paul Dummett for that starting position next season.
Earlier in the week, we were linked with 23-year-old Real Betis full-back Riza Durmesi.
23-year-old Real Betis Danish International left-back Riza Durmesi
That news was from Italian outlet Calcio Mercato and Durmesi was born in Ishøj, Denmark and currently has 15 full caps for Denmark after playing for all of the Denmark Yout sides, including 9 times for the U21 side.
He is small at 5ft 6 ins and last summer penned a five-year contract with the La Liga club who paid his €2M release clause in his contract from former Denmark club Brondby.
His Real Betis contract has in it a buyout clause of €20M (£17.6M) but Calcio Mercato reported Newcastle were ready to bid initially around €10M (£8.8M) for the 23-year-old.
If we can get this lad in for around £8.8M it would seem to be a good buy and maybe the last defender Newcastle will buy this summer?
Maybe?

Comment #161Our Toon I think you’re correct there, but wish list are about the possible no matter how improbable they might be.

Comment #163Dunno if my last comment just vanished into the ether or if it’s in moderation for some reason, but….I said time for the night shift and our American cousins to emerge.
Speaking of America, if I was younger I’d pack my bags and mosey off there to join the protest camp to stop the oil pipe line on the Lakota lands.
Just to give it a football connection, I’m sure there must be a Toon fan or two out there.
G’night all.

Page 5 wowza it’s been busy. Yeah no issues with wish lists, I’d love Carvalho and batshuayi.
Jimmy – Ashley hasn’t mellowed, he’s following his plan and hopefully it carries on without the need for another circus coming into town. We’ve got a very good manager but Ashley has shown he’s happy to pull the rug whenever he feels like it.
2 big signings and we can look at 8th / 10th. Not expecting much this weekend, probably some bs stories on Sunday which will be entertaining

Comment #165People calling Our Toon and Toon Kk not real NUFC fans??? I agree with OT, if someone offered me 15th now, given what we have, I’d snap their hand off for it. Our squad is pretty similar to most of the bottom half, so to say we are safe is relying on an element of luck. I think there are more signings to come which hopefully change that, and when/if they do arrive, both OT and Tkk will likely think we will end higher.
Shame West Ham got Hernandez. It will be interesting to see which striker Rafa is looking at.

Comment #166Yeah, I don’t think he’s mellowed either. Just had a much needed correction forced upon him.

Comment #167I think he might have accepted the need for it though. Which augurs better anyways.

Comment #168Kind of a moot point though isn’t it, saying we are in trouble we go in with what we’ve got. We will be signing more players, and if we are anywhere near the trapdoor in January, it’s a fair bet we’ll be signing more again. And most importantly we have Benitez, which at least 12 other clubs would be over the moon to have.

From previous page of this same thread said he felt a big signing might be in the works or at least he hoped there might be a big signing. He then mentioned William Carvalho. A few of us on the blog have been dreaming this same dream for weeks now (ShirebrookToon, JazzyP and others). Aside from Sigurdsson (highly unlikely) I can’t think of a more exciting signing!
The latest rumors link William to Juventus or Tottenham. Previously linked as favorites was ManCity. Also linked have been West Brom and Arsenal. So it would shock the football world if “lowly” Newcastle could mount a giant push to land this DM juggernaut!!! ComeOn Rafa….shock the hell out us all! 🙂

Comment #170BTW: Latest valuation thrown around for Carvalho is 30M £. But when push comes to shove I would bet he will be sold for 40m£, or thereabouts. So this would have to break NUFC transfer record BIG TIME!!! Still would rather spend that insane amount for William than Bast Dos.

Comment #172@ronaldo aarons – That’s a really good idea actually- would love to sign Wellbeck. I think he’s very under rated and is also a versatile player if he’s needed on the wings.

Comment #173Bas “The Cass” Dost. Pants man par excellence with a name like that, surely. Short for Sebastien I take it, or Bastien, as the German’s prefer, ala Bastien Schweinsteiger.

If we announced that our business was done and this is how it is going to be I could understand their frustrations, but our business isn’t done. Every single day we hear from toon kk and to an extent Our Toon how we are in for a long hard season. That we will be relegated. Last year toon kk predicted we would go fown to league one after our first two games. He changed that after a while to won’t make the play off’s, then to be lucky to make the play offs and losing to Sheffield Wed in the first semi. Lejuene is under whelming, Murphy isn’t good enough. Manquillo is no better than what we’ve got, there hasn’t been a good word said about us since Rafa got here.

Comment #177Nobody has complained more than me about the way Ashley has ran the club for the last ten years. I am not suggesting for a minute he has changed, I do not trust him at all to not screw things up again and would love to see him sell up. But our biggest gripe with him was his lack of ambition, he has finally hired the top manager we’ve craved for all these years who is seemingly on board with what ever plans they’ve drawn up. Can we not show a bit of support for them.

Willhems would have been a decent LB target but don’t think Rafa went after him. Bought by Eintracht Frankfurte for a mere 6M €.

I strange one that, maybe he came across like a Wijnaldum or Jaanmat who expressed his wish to move to a bigger club once he got here. And the man from Madrid, he say no!

Comment #181If that was the case, then I applaud Rafa’s decision. One of the best changes in philosophy coming from Rafa is his insistent that Newcastle would no longer be a stepping-stone! The man simply gets it!!!
