Newcastle have announced the signing of 23-year-old Atletico Madrid full-back Javier Manquillo after there had been a delay in the paperwork, but the signing has now been formally completed.
The announcement was made on Newcastle’s website today and the 23-year-old becomes Rafa Benitez’ fourth signing of the summer and the second in a few days after we also signed 22-year-old Norwich winger Jacob Murphy earlier in the week.
23-year-old full-back Javier Manquillo now a Newcastle player
This is some of what Newcastle put up on their website today:
Spain U-21 international Javier Manquillo has become Newcastle United’s fourth signing of the summer after completing a move to St. James’ Park from Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee.
The 23-year-old defender has signed a three-year contract with the Magpies and has joined up with Rafa Benítez and his new team-mates at the club’s training camp in Ireland.
Madrid-born Manquillo started his career with Atletico, while he has also played on loan for Liverpool, Marseille, and Sunderland.
As well as representing his country at every youth level, he has Champions League and Europa League experience.
Winger Jacob Murphy joined Newcastle on Wednesday while Ghana international Christian Atsu and French centre-back Florian Lejeune have also signed for the club during the current transfer window.
This is what Javier said about his move to Newcastle United:
“I’m very happy to be here. From the first moment that Rafa Benítez called me, I just knew that I had to come here, to such a big club.”
“I’m very happy with the challenge ahead.”
“I’ve come here to work hard and give everything on and off the pitch. Hopefully, then, everything will go in the right direction.”
And this is what manager Benítez said about his fourth signing:
“Like Jacob Murphy, Manquillo is another young player. He can play both sides of the defense and he has a lot of motivation because he knows he has a point to prove.”
“He can still improve but he has played for Spain at under-21 level and that is because he is a good player, so hopefully he will show that form here.”
It’s great to get the deal finally signed and Javier came up out of the blue this week after a report in the Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo earlier this week. which said Javier will sign for three seasons and that Rafa Benitez has been key in signing the player.
The report was accurate in that it said Javier will sign for three seasons and that Rafa Benitez had been key in signing the player.
We welcome Javier Manquillo to Newcastle.
What do you think?

I’m more concerned about emergencies. Will those temp barriers be manned so that ambulances, women in labour, kids with saucepans stuck on their heads can get through. The road system can be tricky to navigate at times. These are questions that should be directed towards the authority, of course. I’m just thinking ahead.

Roads around the RVI i.e. Richardson Road and QV Road will not be closed – most likely they are going to close the road barriers that were erected for the Euros when they were held at SJP

Ah right. That’s all good then. As long as people don’t think I am being awkward for the sake of it 😀

I think we have just enough of all play well, this is why ideally I prefer 2 big signings with one of those being upfront
