This Arsenal Midfielder Could Do A Job For Newcastle Next Season

There was news in the Metro ay back at the beginning of June that Arsene Wenger at Arsenal is having a clear-out of his players and three of the players Newcastle have been interested in are defenders Calum Chambers, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson.

But one of the players who could become available is their excellent defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin who has played well for Arsenal for over four years now and he could be a good buy for Newcastle if the price is right.

Rafa talked earlier in the summer about getting in some Premier League experience but of the three players we have signed this summer – Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune and Jacob Murphy – not many of them have that.

26-year-old French U21 International Francis Coquelin of Arsenal

Rafa is expected to bring in both a playmaker and a defensive midfielder this summer, but there have so far been no links to Coquelin, so maybe we have already made some inquiries and the price is too high?

Newcastle need a defensive midfielder to put pressure on Isaac Hayden who had a great first season at the club last season and also a creative playmaker to help out Jonjo Shelvey in the middle of the park.

Without Jonjo last season for those five games when we were suspended Newcastle looked very ordinary and without creativity – and that was in the Championship.

With  Francis Coquelin why wouldn’t we try to take him on loan this season with an option to buy next summer?

That’s when Newcastle should have a lot more money available to spend in the transfer market after the payout from the Premier League next May.

The 26-year-old French U21 International has played 148 times for Arsenal and his contract at the Gunners still has four years to run.

He would be a great addition to the squad and has certainly has already shown he can play very well in the Premier league.

What do you think?

When we mention Hayden (you and us posters), we politely talk of pressure from a new signing, rather than replacing or upgrading.

However, when Shelvey is mentioned, it is usually said, ‘to play alongside’.

I’ve said it before. The lad can be brilliant but he can also get bypassed by faster and more nimble MFs. We saw that clearly in the PL. He was brought in to help us step it up a notch, didn’t, was even dropped, you know the rest.

Conclusion: a top attacking MF is needed, to put pressure on Shelvey. And Hayden.

When people and play bypasses Shelvey, he can get frustrated and erratic, hence some vicious fouls which can earn suspensions. He was lucky a couple times last year and before that.

He can be more ‘dangerous’ than in the case of so victimised Mitro.

Aaand to conclude, before I monopolise this place.

Do we have any position that can conceivably not be challenged, or to put it more crudely, upgraded?

    Answer: no.

We did well to offload Murph there. He’ll have taken 3 years at reduced wages, when he’s likely only got one decent year left in him. Forest won’t have fancied giving him 3 years, but could really do with him next term, and we get 2 million quid. I think we might struggle a bit more to offload Hanley though, who has a nice big long contract with us. Lazaar also, who I’m now slowly accepting most likely isn’t at all the player I’d hoped he’d be.

It will be interesting to see how many we try to offload of those brought in last summer and how many we paid over the top for…

…a few of those who haven’t worked out might be difficult to shift non the less

I think shelvey has improved under rafa as has Hayden. I want competition for both. Creative player with a big engine and a rock solid defensive midfielder.
Add to that a top goal keeper vocal leader preferred. A top class number 10 with great creativity and pace. A top class striker and I’d be happy enough.

On another note I noticed rafa comment on who Lejeune will compete with. No mention of mbemba or Hanley. I can see a few more leaving to allow for incoming. Including those 2 I’d say, saivet, Riviera, darlow, krul, colback possibly, haidara, lazaar, gamez possibly, mitro… I noticed klopp mentioned he expects rafa to be very busy soon. Got impression that he knows rather than guessing

I think we might struggle to get rid of players we no longer want, they won’t be going to better clubs so unless they are lucky and the club matches their wages they may just sit tight with the common statement ” I want to stay and fight for my place ”

    Won’t be easy

According to the gossip press Chambers is hankering after Palace and Midfielder Jack Wilshere, 25, is open to a move to West Ham – if they can agree a fee with Arsenal.

    Limited horizons springs to mind.
The FA should stop this London cartel from operating and reduce the number of clubs involved so maybe we could see some mergers to encourage more club choice leaving London with three clubs
Crystal Arselace, Tottelsea Ham, West Chelsea Prawn Dining Club etc

At least young Jacob and maybe Josh in the future know how to make the right decisions.
    Well done sir !

Shelvey has now worked on his fitness for 2 summers running, he didn’t work with a PT this summer, that was last summer, he worked on his fitness on his own this summer. I am not sure where some people get the idea that Shelvey is unproven in the PL, he has 99 PL apps, one of our most experienced players in the PL. Put it this way, Shelvey’s value is as such, that you need to smash the transfer record by double to get a player anywhere near his level. The only worry I would have over Shelvey, is being able to keep him out of the clutches of other sides next summer.

Coquelin isn’t a player I would be thrilled to see signed. Clatter and rush player – lacks composure… we had enough of that style of football in the PL last time around.

hibbit…I didn’t say we have problem players…but it does look like most of the players where brought in to do a job in the champ…

…Rafa’s interviews also seem to suggest they will listen to offers on a lot of our players…

Hanley and Lazaar I don’t see us getting our money back on…if we can even move them on permanently.

Diame I think we might keep…we might be able to get our investment back….more or less

Games is probably doing his coaching badges as mentioned so he’ll most likely stay…unless an offer comes in.

    I have probably missed some…

It’s a bit of a ‘Catch 22’ situation with player’s contracts. When you are trying to attract players you have to offer them at least a 2 years contact maybe 3 or they won’t be interested and it stops them walking away for free. Of course now we’re in the situation where we want to dispense with some and we can’t because of their contracts. I actually think Hanley could do a job for us in the Premiership especially against big strikers good in the air but he is obviously at least 4th in the pecking order.

I would take any or all of the Arsenal players mentioned. They will walk into the existing team.
when is Rafa going to buy a proven player?
There is a need foe a lot more pace in the team which was sadly lacking in the Championship.
    Good luck to Murphy.

The players on the longer contracts. I thought Hanley was a given early in the window but that has gone quiet. If rumours are right Colback will be on a decent wage, Lazaar won’t be waiting for his lottery ticket either.

Riviere won’t be in a hurry.

Just not sure if we will get any great fees for them so it may be better to either almost give them away which will save us on wages long term.

Murphy has earned his move and has our appreciation – some of his goals in certain games were vital and secured us points that made the difference. He’s clearly a strong professional at his game.
A three year deal with Forest is good – if they get promoted he could have two years in the PL !

Really not thrilled over the potential signing of Rolan. However, the one glimmer of hope in it would be his age. At 24, you’d think his best years are still ahead of him, and that means theres always a chance he could end up a very good player. Just a small glimmer, but a glimmer non the less. I’d still rather we went for a marquee signing up front

I think Mitro did ok when he came into the side last season, not enough goals but his contribution was good in some games. You pointed to the wolves game as Mitro being a liability, he should have had better protection and was daft for his reaction but he did score in that game and it was a crucial goal. At home against them we list I believe.

Shelvey on the other hand gets a free pass when he missed 4 or 5 games for his ban against wolves I think it was. If that had been Mitro would he have been treated the same by fans? I don’t think he would!! For all the games he was ineffective or didn’t perform there were team performances like QPR away, villa at home, Norwich at home for example where the big lad changed it.

Both Jesus and Manquillo can play at right or left back. Wonder what Rafa makes of Hairdrier. Clearly Hazaar has been assessed by Rafa and added to the woodpile. Riviere has been in there that long the woodlice are feasting on him. Krul also seems to be in there. Not sure if Saivet has been consigned to the same fate, yet.

Apparently we’re looking at 18year old Josh Earl left fullback from PrestonNE as a possible replacement to fill the gap if Lewis Gibson completes his move to Everton.

Doesn’t make much sense other than some sort of financial swap shop that allows Rafa to to top up his transfer and wages kitty.

That’s not what I’ve heard on the Traffic News about their three fans who’ve turned up by the A19 thinking that’s the runway for Sunderland’s very own airport and are disappointed that the roadside burger van won’t sell them any duty free.

Do you lot think we could get away with the squad we now have IF….

We add a proven striker and creative midfielder.

I just get the impression we are scrimping together as much as we can (haggling over a few mill on signings and selling a very good youngin) to maybe try and finance a major or couple of big signings.

Rafa touched on ash told him he could spend the money how he wanted…all on one or sign quite a few.

Bas Dost has been mentioned and nobody else has gone in for him….

Klopp (conversations with Rafa perhaps) has allegedly stated he thinks Rafa is going to be busy now.

We must have money still !
