It seems that Newcastle have pushed their transfer push into overdrive over the last week and we signed two new players into the club – 22-year-old Norwich winger Jacob Murphy and 23-year-old Spanish full back Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid.
The was news in yesterday Mail that Newcastle could now be close to signing 24-year-old Bordeaux’s Uruguayan forward Diego Roan.
In fact a report we published last night said Newcastle were interested in bringing Hull City midfielder Sam Clucas to Newcastle.
24-year-old Bordeaux forward Diego Rolan
Newcastle were reported in the Sun as being close to making a move for the midfielder and we could even get him for a low £4M – maybe.
So we could be close to signing two low-priced players in the coming week?
Diego has resisted a move to Fulham for almost 10 days now and he has been to London at least twice for talks on moving to the club.
But he’s resisting signing for the Craven Cottage club because he really wants to play for a Premier League club rather than a second division English club.
That’s even though Fulham could be pushing hard for promotion to the Premier League next season under their impressive Serbian manager Slavisa Jokanovic.
Diego moved to Bordeaux from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting in Montevideo in January of 2013 and he has performed well in France.
Last season he scored 10 goals in 34 games for Bordeaux and in the four and a half years he’s been at the French club he’s scored 39 goals in 149 games with 13 assists.
Rolan’s biggest strength is his versatility and he can play in different positions up front – but he’s also a good technical player who made his debut for Uruguay back in September of 2014 in a friendly win against Japan.
At the International level, he now has 23 full caps with 4 goals for his country.
Rolan has only one year left on his contract at Bordeaux and could become a free agent next summer and the fee is said to be a fairly reasonable £5M.
He definitely seems to be worth £5M to Newcastle in today’s rather mad transfer window – with ridiculously high fees being paid out for rather ordinary players.
What do you think?

Comment #1Bordeaux supporters would be happy to see him leave. Nuff said?

Comment #2In my opinion we need 3-4 first team players to even survive. As it stands we are dead cert relegation fodder in my eyes. Our best players wouldn’t even get in the side of teams who will be around the relegation zone. I would go as far as saying the Sunderland team of last year was as strong as we are.

Comment #3Looks like we’re still shopping in the bargain basement. I can’t believe Rafa would have agreed to a transfer fund of player sales plus about £10m. There must be lump he is saving for a big transfer – at least that’s the hope I’m clinging on to!

Comment #4That being said I do expect we will bring in the players required to stay up and we can consolidate from there.

Comment #5Only worth buying if we need him, we’ve just got rid of Gouffy ,we’re trying to get rid of Rivière , while Rolan is a versatility player he’s not going to replace anyone in our team

Comment #6Repost:
Ojo would be a great buy at 10m and Liverpool fans would be really pissed to see him sold. Though is buy back clauses in deals the latest trend or what!? If we get him for 10m the buy back clause has to be a steep one for us to profit from spending a bulk of our transfer funds to bring him here. At least at 25m.
On this guy Rolan…I guess he’s an upgrade on Gouffran.

Comment #7(previous posts)….Can they really be called “wingers” when used in a 4-2-3-1 formation? More like wide attackers (?), the wing play surely comes from overlapping fullbacks.

Newcastle United are lining up a move for RB Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, as Rafa Benitez steps up his efforts to secure the services of a world-class goalkeeper, sources in Germany have told ESPN FC.

Comment #9To be fair I think Rafa’s latest comments alluded to the problem. Which is not that we don’t have money to spend – it’s that we have too many players currently in the squad and need to sell.
If we buy another 8 players and only manage to offload say 1, then we are going to have players sitting around being paid a fortune that are ineligible to play. If players such as Saviet and Riviere choose to just milk their contracts it’s going to be a big problem for us financially – we’ll be forking out millions in wages.
Those long contracts Carr and Charnley used to love are coming back to bite us.
For instance we currently have 12 defenders on the books. 12!!!!!
Mbemba
Sterry
Lejeune
Lazaar
Haidara
Dummett
Manquillio
Yedlin
Hanley
Lascelles
Gamez
Clarke
And its seems Haidara/Lazaar are deemed not good enough and we are looking for another left back. So we have to sell before we bring in – not for financial reasons – it’s because our squad is way too big.

The Sunderland team last year was rotten to the core. We would have finished above them last year should we have been in the league.
We will get one player for big money and that will be that. Keep the fans happy, hopefully it’s the lad from Benfica

Comment #12Jib & Ron – Hard to see why Gulacsi would want to come here when he has CL football at RB Leipzig!

Comment #13If we are looking for a LB, an option could be Jordan Amavi. We could tempt Villa to Jack Colback plus £3m
What I don’t understand is that we could have sold Darlow for £4.5m to Boro. This would have been more than we paid for him and brought in money to buy another player.
I think we need a DMC, AMC and ST. My choices would be Samaris, Boudebouz and Andre Gray. However I have seen Boubebouz has got injured and is out until early August, so maybe another AMC option may be necessary.

Comment #14I’m still hoping we’ll find new clubs for krul and darlow this week and that we’ll sign reina. I believe he should be our no. 1 target..before CM and ST. Atm we have a squad with potential..a squad which seems just ok on paper, but has potential to surprise the football world. We are missing the biggest piece of the puzzle though – a captain..and reina fits the bill perfectly..and I really mean perfectly.

Comment #15Sam Clucas looks like he’s definately going to be joining us soon judging by the odds of him signing for us being 1/3 and the next club being 16/1….At £4m i’d be happy with that, he’s a good player but definately not a big signing. We need a big defensive mid to come in, maybe even Fernando from city at £5m wouldnt be a bad signing at all. Striker wise even though we’re still favourites to sign Michy Batshuayi, I think his performance against Arsenal the other Day has probably put him way out of our reach and with Remy and Diego Costa leaving I think Chelsea will keep hold of him to compete with Morata this season. Seeing Marseille in talks to sign Moussa Dembele from Celtic for £15-20m, we should make a move imo.

Comment #16Riza Durmisi a Danish International left back of Albanian descent currently plays for Real Betis.
When the Andalucian club bought him last Summer for €2 million from Brøndby they slapped on a €20 million release clause.
They have said they will listen to offers around the €14 million mark.
Southampton , Schalke and the Toon are in discussions with Betis.
