Report – Rafa Benitez Has New Top Transfer Target For The Summer

Newcastle are definitely after a new goalkeeper to become the third goalkeeper at Newcastle this season – and maybe even the number one – once 20-year-old England U20 star Freddie Woodman goes out on loan – probably to a Championship side for next season.

Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow are the two goalkeepers who will remain and Tim Krul is now training with the U23 squad as he looks for a new club to start his career elsewhere.

Tim has been at Newcastle for twelve years since signing on as a 17 year when Graeme Souness was the manager back in the summer of 2007.

The goalkeeper signed last summer – Matz Sels has returned to Belgium where he is the goalkeeper at Anderlecht for a season loan.

27-year-old 10 times capped Hungarian International Peter Gulacsi

There is a report on ESPN today that Rafa Benitez is interested in signing 27-year-old 10 times capped Hungarian International Peter Gulacsi from Red Bull Leipzig and Rafa has apparently been a long term admirer of the goalkeeper.

The report is that Gulacsi is now Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper target after we missed out on both Pepe Reina and free agent Argentine Willy Caballero.

Benitez actually signed Gulacsi back in 2007 on loan for Liverpool when he was a 17-year-old and he signed permanent terms one year later – although Peter never played for the Reds first team. and was transferred back in 2013 to Red Bull Leipzig.

After a number of loans away from the Reds to get first team experience he was transferred back in 2013 to Red Bull Leipzig, where he has been ever since.

The word on Peter Gulacsi is that he’s a very reliable goalkeeper which is usually the first requirements of any goalkeeper.

Rafa needs to sign a goalkeeper soon – especially if he sees that goalkeeper as Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper for the coming season.

If Peter Gulacsi does join Newcastle he will need to earn his place purely on his form and experience – since we already have two very good goalkeepers at the club in Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow.

What do you think?

I see it as an inevitability that we will break our transfer record. I don’t see our bargain signings to date as signs of penny pinching for the he’ll of it. Something big is in the pipeline.

Must say I’m confused about the keeper situation. Rafa says he hopes to keep Darlow and I wonder if his seeming desire to keep him is like his reluctance to lose Sissoko – a marketing ploy?

Referring to tbe earlier thread about the bindippers being angry about our reported loan approaches for Ojo, I wonder if they’ve as popped as Southampton are after seeing Van Dijk being tapped up?

Pot and kettle comes to mind.

Samaris is with the Benfica Squad in the UK for the Emirates Cup this weekend. Will this increase the likelihood of signing him?

Charnley is setting up a Wiley coyote style trap with an oversized net and a plate of spanakopita. He will be ours within the week

Worst thing is, the way the market is, we could drop 25m on a player and it’d wouldn’t even be a player to be particularly excited about… Not awful players but I can’t imagine Arnautovic or Ayew getting the welcomes shearer/owen got when we broke the record with them…
Saw somewhere Watford quoted Leicester 30m for troy deeney….
Just think next season is where we’ll see the bigger money spent, must admit, surprised we weren’t in for Chalobah or Loftus Cheek and I’m surprised we’ve not had a look at Izzy Brown. Rafa in his career loves dealing with clubs he has strong contacts with

Can Antons explain why Tim krul is with u23?
He’s as close to a local hero as you can these days.
And have so much experience that we need in our squad.
Breaks my heart to not giving him a second chance:(

Rafa revolution is in full swing. It reminds me of the Keegan era. Such exciting times. Top quality buys. I am betting on us doing a Kev this season and coming 4th. Probably the Cup as well.

We will break our transfer record. Man City have spent 220 million.Lets face it, you get a Championship player for 10 million.

ayphoto aside from cheslea (as hard as that is to believe) spending 50M on torres in 2011, we are the only team not to break our record of 17m since 2005. Thats 12 years ago!!!!

Teamstoof, the only reason I can think of Krul being left with the U23’s is that whilst he is an excellent reflex stopper and shot stopper, his distribution is amongst the worst I have seen at the Toon. Mind you, the last keeper I can remember in the Toon who had really good distribution was Tommy the Barman.

Kruls been woeful since 2014… even then a lot of dutch people couldn’t understand how he made their national squad. Woeful last year, AZ fans couldn’t wait to see him leave. Hes currently 4th choice in a team that is actively trying to buy another gk! no point in him being with the first team IMO

I must say I thought we’d break our transfer record several times this summer, but as Jay says, unless we get a big name striker in, it might not happen at all. That was a very interesting list that was posted in the previous thread; PL teams are awash with cash and desperate to spend, but can’t attract top calibre players, so are paying way over the odds for mediocrities.

I’m quite happy for the club to stay out that particular market, not so much because of the transfer fees, but the wages that come with them. It’s one thing for a club like Chelsea to be routinely paying playing £150k a week plus, but quite another for Newcastle with a very different fan base. Obviously most footballers’ wages are on a different planet from the average fan’s, but it has tipped over into obscenity at the very top, which I don’t think is a price worth paying in trying to get there.

Anyone rise think we should make a play fir Alex oxlade chamberlain could be keen to play regularly on the wing from an England perspective ? Murphy one side AOC the other with Gayle in the middle has a rapid look to it with shelvey putting balls in behind
