Rafa Acknowledges Why This Player Must Improve At Newcastle

The news is that Rafa wanted to bring 23-year-old Javier Manquillo to Newcastle last week and he was the man who pushed through the deal for a reasonable fee of £4.5M from Atletico Madrid.

That was the second time we have recruited a right back from the Madrid club in a year (Jesus Gamez recruited last summer) and the second time we have signed a right-back who was on loan at Sunderland in the previous season – we signed DeAndre Yedlin last summer.

Weird!

But Rafa knew all about Javier’s so-so form while on loan in England – last season at Sunderland he wasn’t the first choice for the Black Cats with Billy Jones preferred and two seasons ago at Liverpool he didn’t play well.

Javier Manquillo – knows he has to improve to be successful on Tyneside

He did manage to play 22 times with one goal for Sunderland last season and while at Liverpool he played 19 times.

In between, he spent a season on loan at Marseille and racked up an impressive 43 appearances for the French club in the 2105-2016 season.

After the game on Saturday after Javier had made his debut in the second half Benitez explained why he had decided to recruit both players in one week:

THis is what Rafa said as reported in the Chronicle:

“With Jacob Murphy we were looking for some wingers with some pace and he can give us that.”

“With Javier Manquillo, he can play both positions and we needed to cover a little at right-full-back.”

“He has to improve obviously from the last season but he is a player with potential.”

“So if he can train with us these days and understand what we are looking for he can be a good addition.”

“He has some experience in the Premier League.”

Rafa obviously believes he can make his young countryman into a much better player on Tyneside – and we wouldn’t bet against the manager.

What do you think?

As somebody posted earlier all our additions seem to be to strengthen the squad – none of them (possible exception of Atsu) will go straight into the first eleven. So the starting eleven could be the same as last season which is worrying!

Thought it was down to a 9.5 million fee, if he played 25 games for the unwashed?

And to think we had similar revenue to Atletico Madrid, as recently as 3 years ago. The differences in squads between the two clubs have been world’s apart. Atletico proving what can be done with revenue when it is invested instead of scrimped upon.

Lejuene and Murphy will both go into the starting 11, we arent a club who spends 10 mill for a sub mate

I suppose you could add the “new” players SDJ and Aarons! And is Mbemba on the way back?

I pointed out a while back that several teams had record signings, last season, that worked out badly.
    Stoke – Imbula – 18.3 million.
    Bournemouth – Ibe – 15.3 million
    Burnley – Hendrick – 10.5 million.
    Hull – Mason – 10 million.
    Leicester – Slimani – 29.5 million.
    Saints – Boufal – 16 million.
    Sunderland – N’Dung – 13.6 million.
    Swansea – Baston – 15.5 million.
    Spurs – Sissulki – 30 million.
    Watford- Success – 12.75 million.
    WBA – Chadli – 13 million.
    West Ham – Ayew – 20.5 million (/Arnoutavic 24 million.)

WWSBRD @4 – I can’t see Lejuene displaying Lascelles & Clarke to start with – likewise I think Murphy is a bit inexperienced to start.
RonKnee – I had forgotten about De Jong – he could be a starter not so sure about Aarons?

‘Manchester City have dropped their asking price for 30-year-old midfielder Samir Nasri, who is being shunned by team-mates on the club’s pre-season tour because of his arrogance, from £21m to £10m.’ (Times)

Quick check, he earns £120k a week.

That will be a good signing for a West Ham or similar club.

200 million there, spent by 12 teams on record signings and hard to pick many good signings. Probably Chadli and Hendrick.

I think Lejeune will start ahead of either tbh but more likely Lascelles will miss out, unless we play 3 at the back. As for Murphy the only winger ahead of him is Ritchie, Atsu was an impact sub all last season while he stared for Norwich and Aarons we all know the score with…unless we bring in someone else I dont see why he wont play ahead of them if he has a good preseason

We will see but not sure why people are thinking they wont be playing

but with a season in the prem under their belt most of those club’s will be praying for some significant improvement in their record buys

Ron Knee @15 – I think Rafa is testing their fitness especially De Jong who he seems to play for nearly the whole game. Diame hasn’t worked out as a No.10 so I think Rafa has De Jong in mind if he is over his fitness problems. Aarons is certainly a good impact sub if not a starter but again if he can remain fit.

Is Diego Rolan a upgrade on Mitro – I wouldn’t say so
    His record:
39 goals in 149 games with Bordeaux

Mitros record with Anderlecht and the TOON
    50 goals in 128 games
14 in 59 for the TOON

and here’s Gayles in comparison to:
38 goals in 94 games for Palace and the TOON
23 in 30 for the TOON all in the Championship

in other words Mitro’s ratio is way better than Rolan’s
and believe it or not on a comparison with Gayles

As for young lads coming through was impressed with Stuart Findlay and Dan Barlaser when they appeared in or League Cup Team

If we are still looking for a centre half if he has not been sold I would have a punt at Kone at Mackemland – very impressive first season and and beast of a player on his day – lost the plot under Moyes

Rafa bingo rules mean they will all get a chance.

I like that system it keeps them all on there toes. Its gotta be good for the youngins coming through to know they can break into the squad and fight for a shirt.

Now if we can keep improving the bairns and start to bring them on we will be on the right track.

Sadly the club sells itself short on so many areas the rebuild will take a lot longer than we wish .

I blame ashley 100% for that but hope that now rafas showing him how it should be done he will want to improve it.

    We can but hope..

strikes me that not everyone has seen Rolan play much.. Ive seen a bunch of times, no clue if he’s good enough for the premier league but he’s almost a carbon copy of Gayle. Quick, runs all game long, almost Bellamy like. Hes quite tenacious too, Uruguayan so got that nastiness streak in him. For me, as a 3rd choice striker/Gayle back up hes a bargain for 5m… was just a year ago Man utd were watching him. Hes suffered a poor season as Bordeaux don’t really play to his strengths but I think the open nature of premier league football would suit him. Hes not the awful player some toon fans make him out to be

Hibbit, what I’m saying is a lot of the clubs we will be competing with spent big money on a club transfer record signing, but not many of those signings worked out. Stoke, Swansea and Leicester are trying to offload; can’t count Spurs as being in our league, but Sulk is certainly not worth much now!

    http://www.danielgeey.com

The above link is for those, like myself, who wondered wtf this buy back clause is all about.
Having read it, I can see the ‘bigger’ clubs using it more and more to further control the flow of players around the PL.
Basically, they sell you a player for the going rate. Should you then improve said player and he gets called up for his country for example, they can then DEMAND you sell the player back.
This is far from the first refusal agreement of old, where if the player becomes great and you decide to cash in, the selling club gets first dibs on him. This new deal removes the buying club’s option completely.
So should we take a gamble on Ojo for ten million – which is a gamble for a basically untried player – and he turns into the next Alli, with a value of 50-60 million over the next two seasons, Liverpool could buy him back for 25m like it or not.
The the are a few other things in the small print but basically that’s it in a nutshell.
It’s a no lose situation for Liverpool, who get the ten million regardless, then could resign a potential superstar for well under market value.
For me it’s a no-no, but maybe some of you might feel differently.

    ‘Udders bought Mounie, 11 million.
    Brighton, Matt Ryan, 5.25 million.
People going on about how poor we are, should look at teams like Brighton, ‘Udders, Watford, Bournemouth, Burnley, Swans, Stoke, WBA, even Leicester, West Spam and Saints – we can certainly compete with those, even now.
The top 7 including Everton are out of reach, for know and Palace may be, too.

It’s becoming clear that we’ve signed a gem in young Fernández and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him turn out for the first team sometime this season.
Appears he can play anywhere along the front line whilst primarily a winger.
He has pace, knows where the goal is and can also pick a killer pass.
Potentially the answer to our No10 problem? If not, our wingers will be kept on their toes.
