Newcastle Could Sign Target For £13.4M As Selling Club About To Sign Replacement

We have been linked in the Portuguese press this summer quite a number of times with Benfica’s 28-year-old Greek International holding midfielder Andreas Samaris.

The latest news was that Newcastle had bid around €15M (£13.4M) for him with his club wanting €20M – and nothing seems to have happened for a couple of weeks.

There is news now in O Jogo that Argentine U20 central midfielder Santiago Ascacíbar from Estudiantes de La Plata will be arriving at the Benfica club soon and when that happens Andreas Samaris can be sold.

Benfica’s 28-year-old holding midfielder Andreas Samaris

That could be good news for Newcastle, but we are also being linked with a number of other players in the last few days in the same positions.

However, that seems consistent with the Chronicle reporting that we are going after a number of targets together  –  and presumably, the club will decide soon which are the best targets at the right price.

That strategy also gives Newcastle some leveraging power in the market when other clubs know we have alternative players we are also looking at.

Newcastle could have a good chance of signing Samaras for the €15M we have already bid because no other clubs have been interested so far in signing the player – so in that sense, we are in the lead to sign Samaris.

Samaris signed on from Olympiacos four years ago on a five-year contract for a transfer fee of just €10M and with a €45M release clause in his Benfica contract.

Newcastle may be able to get this player in at a third of his release fee.

In the four years he’s been at Benfica Andreas has played 110 games for the Portuguese giants with two goals.

Newcastle seems to be moving closer to signing some of our targets – but wouldn’t it be really great if Rafa can get say two of his top targets through the door this week.

That would be a big relief and then we would have six players in this summer and even on schedule for this transfer window.

Of course, we also have a number of players we have to move out so it’s still going to be very busy through the end of August.

Howay The Lads!!

GK Elliot Darlow Woodman 2(excluding Woodman)
    FB Manquillo Yedlin Dummet 3
CB Mbemba Clark Lascelles Lejeune 4
    DM Hayden Colback 2
    CM Diame Shelvey 2
    AM De Jong Perez 2
LW/RW Atsu Murphy Aaron Ritchie 4
    ST Mitrovic Gayle 2

Already 21 players, so we can add only another 4 but we need 5.
    LB, DM, CM, AM, St
So we need to sell one from the list. Diame?
As for new GK, he will replace Darlow.

Sell: Gamez(maybe coaching), Haidara,Hanley , Riviere, Krul, Lazaar, Saivet

Clearly the issue here is we have too many players. We need to sell up to 8 players.

Jib from previous – Tommy Gibb (Gibbo) was one of my favourite players. He seemed to have a knack of popping up with important goals.

Players under the age of 21 don’t need to be registered in the squad, but I agree that some players need to be shipped out, asap; and I have no doubt that will be one of the hold ups in bringing new players in.

The biggest problem is who will take all our cast offs? Especially the likes of Riviere!

m.a @2 – According to last night’s Chronicle Krul, Lazaar & Saivet have been told to find another club and not training with the 1st team so you can cross them off your squad list.

Anybody have a clear and concise definition of what “linked” means?
Charney has approached the selling club, or he has approached the player’agent, or even put in a tentative offer? Or does it just mean somebody spotted Charney reading the sports section of one of the dailies?.

I did not include Woodman in the total count. Not sure about Rolando Aaron.
Yes, we need to ship out all these players. The sad part is Riviere, Lazaar, Saivet, Gamez, Metz contributed almost zero to the club, cost club almost 20m. Imagine we had bought one good player with that money.

    another one we missed !!!

Oxford United have signed former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson on a one-year deal.

The 33-year-old has been training with the U’s since the start of the summer, and manager Pep Clotet told the club website: “He is a good talker and organiser and a fantastic professional.

“What’s more, he’ll bring a lot to the team in attacking areas with the quality he possesses in the build-up phase.”

    hibbit,
Absolute disgrace the way Carver publicly disgraced him. I spoke to a Wolves fan on holiday last year who was worried about his character because of that incident. John Carver is one of the biggest arse holes in the world of football.

Nice summary of squad, we clearly need a class under 21 player so they don’t count in the 25. How old is Murphy?

We need 3 keepers, woodman out on loan so it seems Krul will go and Elliot and Darlow will stay. GK needed, if we fail then I’d just keep Krio

We need a LB although Colback could cover as can Manquillo

We need a DCM, ACM and a Striker. I guess Saivet could be tried again. Haidara, Gamez, Hanley, Lazaar, Rivière need to go and of those Hanley is the only easy sell, a championship club will take them. There must be a French league 2 or English league 1 club who will take Rivière with us paying his wages. Gamez play with under 23s and coach. Haidara and Lazaar loan or free to someone in championship or abroad, just clean the decks.

    That leaves
GK Elliot, Darlow Krul or ?
    CB Lejeune, Clark, Lascelles, Mbemba
    FB Yedlin, Manquillo, Dummet, ?
    CM Shelvey, Hayden, Diame, Colback
    ACM Perez, De Jong
    Wings Murphy, Ritchie, Atsu, Aarons
    CF Gayle, Mitrovic, ?
    Utility Saivet
3 important question marks to fill and ideally need to replace Colback/ Diame/ Saivet also for a good squad with a striker and a left back being the priority now

Why not simply cut our losses on the likes of Rivière etc. and sell them off for token fees,
    5 grand or so.
That would free up spaces in the squad, and get their wages off the wage bill.
It would be like a fire sale.
Shops need to do this from time to time to free up valuable space. Might Ashley be up for it ? Who knows ?

It’s funny how you get a poster or two making a judgement on a
player and the rest of the nodding donkeys agree and from then on that player is acknowledged as crap.

I want to say that Jack Colback is not garbage as some would have it .

The less knowledgeable fans don’t recognise the hard yards and graft he puts in to let more gifted players flourish.

Mag52 @21 – It would still be difficult to find them a club because of their wages. The only way would be to mutually agree to terminate their contract. However that would mean we had to pay an agreed percentage of their total wages in a lump sum. It’s probably cheaper to keep paying them in the hope they will eventually leave for another club.
