17-year-old defender Lewis Gibson has finally joined for an undisclosed but it’s been widely reported in various new outlets that Newcastle will be getting £6M for him and that’s what we’ll assume in our transfer table.
Lewis’ elder brother Liam – who is 21 – is still at Newcastle.
Lewis left because there’s nothing Newcastle could do to keep him since he was an Academy player without a professional contract.
17-year-old defender Lewis Gibson – signed by Everton
And in any case, he wanted to join Everton and world-class manager Rafa Benitez only wants players who want to play for Newcastle – he wants them to show the passion when wearing that famous black and white striped shirt.
Lewis was born in Stanley but it doesn’t seem he had the urge to play for his local club – but so be it.
It’s a free world after all and it could be a good move for Lewis who goes straight into the Everton U23 squad.
Here’s what Newcastle put out on their website today:
Young defender Lewis Gibson has joined Everton for an undisclosed fee.
The 17-year-old center half has linked up with the Toffees, committing his future to the Goodison Park outfit having spent his formative years on Tyneside.
Gibson, the younger brother of United Under-23s’ full back Liam, was part of the Magpies’ Under-18s side last season.
He was part of United’s FA Youth Cup run last season as Dave Watson’s youngsters made it to the last eight, and has also played for the club’s under-23 team and been capped by England at under-17 level during his time at St. James’ Park.
And that makes the net spend for Newcastle even lower estimated at 4.5M by assuming the transfer fees so far this season.
We should be announcing 21-year-old Spaniard Mikel Merino today on loan for a season and we are reported to have an option to buy him for £6M at the end of the season.
The fee we are rumored to be getting for Lweius will pay for that.
With £6M assumed from Everton here is what the current transfer table looks like with Mikel Merino still pending.

Another transfer out of nowhere, then. This time out going. 5M in the bank towards new players, and we are finally rid of probably (arguably i suppose) the worst CF I have seen in a toon top.

Comment #15With gibson and now rivi chipping in with sales we have possibly moved into transfer profit so far .
.time for penfold to get his finger out and spash the cash on rafas more expensive targets.
We need a cf cdm and a goalie.
Its good we are making money from ex players but now is the time to bolt the horse to the cart..

So it does. I just went off the title. Either way, i’d take 5.99 for postage and packing, and send him on his way.

Comment #21Managing to get shot of him for free would be considered a good move, getting rid of him for 5M would be considered a Stroke of genius but might land you in court on daylight robbery charges.

Comment #27Wishful thinking to imagine we’re getting £6m for this kid. Surely that’s related to various add-ons, no doubt including first team appearances and full international caps, so I wouldn’t count it the kitty just yet.

Nope, its a compo deal. We had no say in his sale at all, due to him having no pro contract. He has entered the final year of his scholarship and has decided to leave. If Everton had not agreed 6M, it would have been decided at tribunal, but it’s not actually the same as a sale, so we can’t ask for addons, or a buyback clause or owt like that.

I am sorry for saying this transfer must be a mistake, I did not realise junior players without contracts can still demand significant fees.
