Fans Flock To Twitter to Comment On The Signing Of Mikel Merino

Newcastle has made their third summer signing in 9 days in getting in Mikel Merino on loan for the season from German club Borussia Dortmund.

There are different news stories on whether the loan deal comes with an option to buy or an obligation to buy at the end of the loan agreement.

The one that we have heard the most comes from the Mail, and it says we have agreed to sign the tall holding midfielder who can also play at center-back next year for £6M.

Rafa doesn’t like a loan deal when we cannot buy the player who comes in on loan at the end of the season depending on how he plays.

But if Rafa believes in this player then he will have no problem with the obligation to buy, and that has saved us the transfer fee this summer but we don’t know how much the loan fee is and we’ll probably have to pay Mikel’s wages too.

Here are some typical tweets about the newcomer today.

We still only have a net spend of 4.5M pounds lads. That should leave another 250K in the budget!!!!

I’d like to see a little of Mad Dog in Germany. Might be a bit early I suppose. The Germans are afraid of him I hear…..

Regardless of everything else, we need to bear in mind that Rafa is doing this for us, the fans. He could’ve gone to China for big bucks, or there was an offer from West Ham on the table should he have wanted to bail when we went down..
We’re finding out now that the money he was getting this season wasn’t great, but he was happy to work within those limits, knowing next season will be different.
Even with constraints, he’s building a squad of players who want to play for us, young and ambitious and grateful to be learning from a master tactician, every one playing their hearts out for the boss, each other and us, the supporters.
We won’t set the world on fire this season, but you know every one of them will give 100% because Rafa won’t accept less and they’ve all got a point to prove.
You can’t ask much more than that. We wanted a team that tries, well, we’ve got one.
This season always was going to be about survival, but I’m quietly confident we’ll do better than just survive.
We need to make SJP a fortress again. Make it hostile for teams coming here. Be Downright nasty when required. Show Rafa he made the right choice staying and the team they made the right choice coming here. We’re all in this together. Let’s keep it that way.

i think ash’s concept of buying young players was never necessarily a bad idea. however, the notion they would develop under the string of mediocre managers prior to rafa was plain daft. rafa probably has far better contacts than carr ever dd as well.

I’m all for bringing young players in with potential, Mike let’s that resale prospect after all, buts it’s getting a good balance.

Bobby you have to put a bet on to watch a live stream on 365. Think it’s about £2.00

They have loads of streams but you have to watch on a and there is usually.only.a couple of camera angles.

Carr did spot and bring in SOME decent players but the French revolution got a bit over the top.
at least Rafa is looking elsewhere.

Rotunda, for any club without a sugar daddy, it really is the only way mate. Fine for the likes of Chelsea and City, or Manure who have endless credit to buy older players for silly money, but most clubs have to realise a return for their investment. Even Rafa has been quoted as saying it’s the only way to do it.
It’s all about wheeling and dealing and I think Rafa must like that part of it. It’s going to be the way he’ll do it as long as he can deviate when he sees fit, which Ashley agreed to.
They appear to agree on many things and happy enough working together and that’ll do me. Exciting times ahead imo.

Tinman, Aye I did that, but still only got the pitch! 🙂 Like I say, it might have been during the season when Sky hold the rights, which would actually make sense. Friendlies are nowt to do with sky so there well might be a proper stream. Worth having a look anyway.

Yes, you’ve nicely summed up Rafa’s thinking, motivation and his commitment to the fans of NUFC and the city. His message is quite clear –

    One step at a time – we’re not gonna set the world on fire this season;

    To the fans, support the lads on the pitch, help them, cheer them on – for the whole game;

Ashley, listen to Rafa and things’ll be fine. Geddit?

I like the idea of bring youngsters into the club and training them to be better and move expensive when they leave a year or so later.

Adding a year in the epl to a cv is going to be a sure fire way to double the value of a player.

Once we get this next season under wor belts we will be able to mix it up and buy proven epl players but tbh the prices are getting that stupid will it be worth it..

I would not have trusted the others to find the future stars who can make the grade but with rafa running the show and mondailcarr sent to the nackers yard we could improve the club loads.

    Exciting times indeed

I hope everyone who slated his every move last year are truly embarrassed, the guy has obviously really taken to us and we are seriously lucky to have him, he’s obviously motivated by the challenge of taking a sleeping giant on and wants to prove those who say that he only does well on a big budget wrong. If he wins a the Europa league with us without the big budget afforded Mourhino and Guardiola it puts him firmly back in their bracket of names when people are talking about top managers.

Its great to have someone who really gets the club and us the fans.

Budget is tight fatties clueless and the clubs years behind where it should be.

But with a little tlc the giant will awaken and our great club will get back to where we know in our hearts it should be..

Just gotta put our faith that he can get us through this first season back and then we can really push on.

    In rafa we trust..

Whilst stranger things have happened – you just never know if Rafa gets the new players firing on all cylinders we might surprise a few. Whilst that -time date now – is fanciful thinking – well you just never know.
Not saying we could do a Leicester – probably need to see what standard we are at after a couple of games.

Well said. No reason we can’t pull up a few trees and cause a shock or two. The two other teams who came up with us have not imo improved themselves despite signings, and i am sure the likes of stoke and wba are poorer than us. And we definitely have an advantage in the manager department over at least 8 other prem teams. Good times ahead.

40 points is the magic number for safety i think thats the first target i think everything after that will be great
one thing with rafa at the helm is we wont be on the wrong side of any 3 4 5- 0 losses and even against the top teams we will be tough to break down well organised and play as a team

lots to look forward to for us going forward this season will be tough but we should be ok

To celebrate this moment of optimism – thinking of fellow bloggers who cannot take part in celebrating – our most recent signing and to get me prepared for holiday mode and practising sending folks post cards, I think a blog post card to the missing Jib would be appropriate.

    Dear Jib,
We have signed another player. The blog is happy. Wish you were here.
    Signed: Mister Tuff.
