Rafa Goes After Some Class Midfield Talent – But This Player Will Be Expensive

Sports writer Dean Jones works for the Bleacher report and right out of the blue today he says that Newcastle could now make a move for James McCarthy who we have been after since early January when we tried to sign him during the last transfer window.

We know Rafa is keen on the player but not too keen on the £25M price tag it may take to get the very experienced Everton player to Newcastle.

But on the other hand, we have not spent much money in the transfer market so far and in fact by our reckoning only £4.5M net for the first five deals including Mikel Merino. – who should sign for us on a season long loan deal today with an obligation to buy next summer for £6M.

The 21-year-old Spaniard should sign for us on a season long loan deal today with an obligation to buy next summer for £6M.

26-year-old James McCarthy in Republic of Ireland colors

So we certainly have money available to buy some class players this summer, as well as Rafa and Lee Charnley getting some decent deals completed fairly cheaply so far this summer.

This is the tweet sent out by Dean Jones:

James McCarthy was injured a lot last season and seemed to be out of favor with new Dutch manager Ronald Koeman and we cannot believe James would be happy to stay at the club for another season.

He is available for transfer but maybe what the Magpies need to do is to test the waters with say a bid of £18M and take it from there?

James has made 220 total Premier League appearances for Wigan and Everton and he’s certainly available.

He has played 127 times for Everton with 6 goals but has been out of favor since Ronald Koeman joined the club and he seems to have no future at the Toffees.

James was born in Glasgow and has played 41 times for the Republic of Ireland and grew up supporting Celtic as a child would you believe

Newcastle was supposed to have made a £16M bid for James in late January but that was turned down by the Toffees.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Hi all geordies, the best fans in the land, i live in Ireland, and have supported Ireland and Newcastle all my life, iam 63 now so ive supported my country and Newcastle a long time, nothing would please me better than to see some Irishmen in the Newcastle team, but only good quality Irishmen who would make Newcastle a much better team, so i hope to God Rafa does not sign James Mc Carthy, i can tell you now he is a very poor quality player, he has no speed, not creative in any way, does not control midfield, injury prone, beleive me in this one as ive watched him play many times for both Ireland and Everton, and this is one Irish player i hope to god we dont sign, he is the same type of player as Jack Colback, the only difference is Jack Colback is much better, he is not worth anymore than 5 million tops, he is simply no better than anyone we already have on our books, please Rafa dont sign James Mc Carthy. HWTL.

Its common for clubs to pay for players in installments

Why cant we put a goalscorer on the never never ?

I still think we will spend between 50 – 75 million this window and that is not a lot in todays market

Its good that rafas ruthless with out going player others would have stuck with them just because they bought them even if they fail.

Clear the dead wood and buy 3-4 new and we are set..

I’d rather have Merino (a 21 year old loanee) playing than McCarthy, pretty much says it all just another Colback style player who frankly I wouldn’t want at the club at any price would represent a backwards step. Surprised some people think this would be good for the club? Curious how that is the case he’s average at best. If we are wanting another midfielder then the two i’d be pleased with are Allan and/or Delph

Maybe we have asked clubs to let us pay installments and they have said no? That was certainly the chat about Lejuene in the press in that we were haggling over paying the full fee !!

Understandable that foreign clubs would want the full fee the now so they can get a player in with the money it might be a little easier at the end of the window to get deals like that done

I think Merino will prove to be a big hit and emerge as real competition for Shelvey in particular.

Rafa’s comments in the press release about him being “very, very focused and professional” and “certainly having the mentality to get better and better” is exactly the message Shelvey needs to push him on.

Been a while since we’ve had a real options in CM. Shelvey simply had to play when fit last season as we had nobody else that could do the playmaker role. Now he’s got a young, hungry rival for his playmaker crown that has a few strings to his bow – like his aerial ability – that Shelvey doesn’t. Time to really shape up boyo!

Loans with options to buy are common enough

Pay a down payment of x amount and spread the cost is also common (sisjokeoo)

Yes we have to balance the books but not until next spring and by then we will have more available.

We dont need a lot of new players but we do need quality and it comes at a cost mostly.

Rafas hardly going to come out and say yeah we have millions to spend who wants it ..

Did I miss something – probably – but who said we overprepared for the Championship?

I read Oldgit contemplating why – like for the Championship – we are not buying quality PL experience…a fair and valid question!

Though we have a few on record not getting that argument…

Another thing about Merino is that he’s 6ft 2 and from videos I’ve seen good in the air from set pieces, might suit him well in the prem more than it did in Spain, bodes well in a defensive and attacking sense.

I hope merino is here to compeate with jonjo

I hope he has him worried about sitting on the bench.

Jonjo has stated himself that not playing football would have him pulling his hair out if he had any.

Time for him to play his best ever too keep the young blood off the park.

Thanks for your comment Ron Knee, i hope your keeping very well and having an nice day? Ron as Newcastle fans we all want the same thing, players who are actually going to improve Newcastle, ron the Newcastle and Ireland fans have a lot in common, as they are both very sporting and loyal fans, who get behind their team, well Ron i can tell you now the Ireland fans are much happier when Mc Carthy is not in the team or injured, as Ireland play much better when James Mc Carthy is not playing, ron i think Everton are having a laugh looking anything more then 10 million for Mc Carthy, even in todays inflated transfer market he is not worth anymore than 3 to 5 million in my view. Great. Merino has signed.
On mccarthy…. surely we are not about to break our transfer record on him? Especially as there is news that Samaris has agreed personal terms and may well sign for us (not that i think hes brilliant, but hes cheaper and is probably a similar player).

Magicman, my earlier comment pretty much echoes yours. I think he gets a lot of unwarranted stick in the Irish squad when he play’s in an ‘attacking’ role as he just cannot play that type of game. Much prefer him in a deeper role and think he is an average player. Would certainly not be the sort of player I would like to cheer on each week but he’s ‘decent’.

Certainly would not be cheering the signing at even £10m. The £25m quoted would be one of the worst signings I have ever seen. Imagine James McCarthy as our record signing. *Shivers*
