Rafa Goes After Some Class Midfield Talent – But This Player Will Be Expensive

Sports writer Dean Jones works for the Bleacher report and right out of the blue today he says that Newcastle could now make a move for James McCarthy who we have been after since early January when we tried to sign him during the last transfer window.

We know Rafa is keen on the player but not too keen on the £25M price tag it may take to get the very experienced Everton player to Newcastle.

But on the other hand, we have not spent much money in the transfer market so far and in fact by our reckoning only £4.5M net for the first five deals including Mikel Merino. – who should sign for us on a season long loan deal today with an obligation to buy next summer for £6M.

The 21-year-old Spaniard should sign for us on a season long loan deal today with an obligation to buy next summer for £6M.

26-year-old James McCarthy in Republic of Ireland colors

So we certainly have money available to buy some class players this summer, as well as Rafa and Lee Charnley getting some decent deals completed fairly cheaply so far this summer.

This is the tweet sent out by Dean Jones:

James McCarthy was injured a lot last season and seemed to be out of favor with new Dutch manager Ronald Koeman and we cannot believe James would be happy to stay at the club for another season.

He is available for transfer but maybe what the Magpies need to do is to test the waters with say a bid of £18M and take it from there?

James has made 220 total Premier League appearances for Wigan and Everton and he’s certainly available.

He has played 127 times for Everton with 6 goals but has been out of favor since Ronald Koeman joined the club and he seems to have no future at the Toffees.

James was born in Glasgow and has played 41 times for the Republic of Ireland and grew up supporting Celtic as a child would you believe

Newcastle was supposed to have made a £16M bid for James in late January but that was turned down by the Toffees.

What do you think?

McCarthy isn’t worth HALF of what Everton are demanding. Everton are trying to recoup the money they’re splashing out elsewhere

Merino is reminiscent in style to Liverpool’s Alonso. He provides versatility in midfield an excellent signing.

Belfast your spot on about James Mc Carthy, everyone in Ireland knows he is crap, and the Everton fans know he is crap, Jimmy Smith either knows nothing about football, or has never seen him play, he is out of the same mould of Jack Colback, the only difference is Colback is even much better, enough said Belfast he he. HWTL.

I am not jacks biggest fan but if mccarthy is worth near 25 whats jack worth

Got to be @ least 10.

That said i still think he will stay till at least jan when we can afford to replace with a higher quality player.

    This window is mental.

Good luck to you man, wherever you end up.

I am wondering if we are going to change formation or if these are our options

    Gk – Elliot/New

    Rb – Yedlin/manq
    Cb – mbemba/lejeune
    Cb – lascelles/Clark
    Lb – dummett/?

    Playmaker – shelvey/ merino
    Dm – colback/ Hayden

    Rw- Ritchie/atsu
    L/w – murphy/Aaron’s

    Am – perez/De jong

    Striker – Gayle / mitro

I personally think that we will see a few formations but looking at our options purposely ignoring players I think are all but gone I think we are a keeper, a number 10 and a striker short. Possibly a left back if manquillo is not covering bother rb and lb.

    Cyprus.
Rivi played quite a few times, and was a waste of space. Yes, good luck to him, but he was a complete failure for us, there is plenty of evidence to support that.

Is it maybe Mccarthy and his agent who are drumming up the Newcastle links?

We are as close to Glasgow as he could get and apparently Celtic said they couldn’t afford him so maybe he sees us as the next best bet?

I hope Mitrovic is sold to raise money for a striker that knows where the goal is.
Is he one for the future? All this crack of he needs time, he is at an age of showing what he’s all about Rooney at sixteen was in a different league.

I don’t think they are bad lads at all just trying to sell papers/clicks to keep themselves in work.
    All the papers print crap.

Might not be the guaranteed 100% goals but he is a proper handful and is a more physical version of Gayle

I dont think this window will be as bad as we first thought for us. a bit of momentum seems to be gathering and i think a striker is next on the list. we have a strong enough midfield to hold our own in the prem imo. Strong enough in defence not to be embarrassed too many times, i think we will be ok. Our togetherness and organisation will be massive for us. If we get a half decent striker, does,nt have to be world class, then i think we will be fine.

Where did this figure of 100 million come from. That’s the Money we will make this year. So our budget is our profit from last season no? I’d be surprised if our net spend is more than 30 million.

Looking at our team from the opening match of the 15/16 season vs Southampton.

Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Chancel Mbemba, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Massadio Haidara; Vurnon Anita (Cheick Tiote 68), Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum (Siem de Jong 81), Gabriel Obertan; Papiss Cisse (Aleksandar Mitrovic 75)

Good grief, particularly that CM pairing of Colback and Anita which was deployed in 6 of our first 7 games by McWally, but the only other option at the time was a disinterested Tiote coming back from injury (RIP).

Then we had Sissoko, an awful footballer on one wing, Gini that didn’t turn up for away matches, a past it Colo, an impetuous Janmaat, a useless Cisse and untested Mitrovic.

We’re in much better shape now.

So, we know now that we’re in exactly the same position as Brighton and Huddersfield – and as every other club getting promoted into the big money league find themselves. We still don’t know how much money is available but I’m finding all this quite exciting myself.
    Selling Rivierre? Go Penfold.
So were not buying big money players but Rafa is quietly going about assembling a young and exciting looking squad with experience thrown in, with more still to come.
Although it was only Bradford, there was a spring in the step of the players and the pass and move was already far crisper than last season.
I can’t wait for the season to start. Getting through this season was always going to be the aim so I was never expecting anything else.
This is us against the world and the fans are going to be important to Rafa and the lads this season more than ever. Win lose or draw we need to back them all the way. Bring it on.
