Darlow, Colback, Murphy, de Jong And Mitrovic Start At Mainz – Merino On Bench

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just named his side for the fourth pre-season friendly of pre-season against Mainz 04 in Germany this afternoon.

We now have three friendlies coming up in a short eight days, and then the lads have a rest of eight days as we prepare for our first Premier League game of the season two weeks tomorrow against Tottenham at home.

It would be good to win this game this afternoon to get the lads into that winning mentality.

Here is the team as just reported on the Newcastle United Twitter account.

After his excellent showing last week at Bradford, Jacob Murphy gets a start, and it’s a big chance for him to further impress.

It looks like Rob Elliot has the day off today so probably 45 minutes each for Karl Darlow and young Freddie Woodman in goal, who played well at Bradford City last week.

We also expect there to be changes at half time although maybe not as many as usual in this game?

It would be good to get the win this afternoon against the Bundesliga side.

Howay The Lads!!

Comments welcome.

de Blasis looks tiny. Could be a tricky customer to look out for.

Glad to see SDJ being given every chance to get match fit and up to speed in pre-season, he really needs it.

Also glad to see some streams unexpectedly working. Been starved of fotty!

Poor from the midfield. Got sliced through and from there on the defence were at the mercy of the free man with the ball and runners.

To be fair, that was a great through ball by de Blasis. He has a bit of David Silva about him. I wonder if he is available.

Colback absolutely no awareness there in the box. Could have taken it down on his chest and turned on goal.

We have no style to our play what so ever. We are very static once they’ve released the ball it someone elses problem. Mitro and De Jong will never work together both far to slow neither can get onto each others knock ons.

That throw in was actually tragic. Diame’ reaction was even worse. Definitely treating this one like a friendly. Doesn’t look like a Rafa team that’s for sure.

Shelvey and Hayden please at half time. We will instantly be transformed into a good team. Also I agree regarding De Jong and Micro not being able to work together. Too slow.

A good test, Mainz looking a lot sharper than us, further on in their pre-season?
Disappointed how little we’ve shown in attack.
SDJ looking more like his former self, hope we can keep him and Aarons fit.

I know its just a friendly, BUT come on there is nothing to our game, its like we are just a bunch of friends meeting on a saturday afternoon for a knock about. and it all stems from our CMF, i dont like to say this because “apparently” these guy are pros, but its like they need richie or someone to do things for them
