Darlow, Colback, Murphy, de Jong And Mitrovic Start At Mainz – Merino On Bench

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just named his side for the fourth pre-season friendly of pre-season against Mainz 04 in Germany this afternoon.

We now have three friendlies coming up in a short eight days, and then the lads have a rest of eight days as we prepare for our first Premier League game of the season two weeks tomorrow against Tottenham at home.

It would be good to win this game this afternoon to get the lads into that winning mentality.

Here is the team as just reported on the Newcastle United Twitter account.

After his excellent showing last week at Bradford, Jacob Murphy gets a start, and it’s a big chance for him to further impress.

It looks like Rob Elliot has the day off today so probably 45 minutes each for Karl Darlow and young Freddie Woodman in goal, who played well at Bradford City last week.

We also expect there to be changes at half time although maybe not as many as usual in this game?

It would be good to get the win this afternoon against the Bundesliga side.

Howay The Lads!!

Comments welcome.

Only players that have been decent are Lejeune and De Jong at times.

Chill lads, this is a friendly for one and definitely nowhere near our starting line up. Don’t forget we’ve got a tougher game during the week against a better side. Then we’ll likely see more of the line up, followed by the Verona game at home. Some people can’t help but criticise unnecessarily. That’s what these games are for.
For the same reason nobody got overexcited about the excellent performance the other night, nobody should read too much into this. Does anybody see this as our starting line up? Hardly.
We build up towards the first game, not play our best team today.

    I understand that Bobby.

Still doesn’t take away the fact that the first half was disappointing.

Hopefully Rafa knows to never use Colback again lol.

Young Mag, like I say, we’ve got a much tougher game midweek, them one on the weekend. I imagine we’ll see the starting eleven then, both games. Definitely the home one. It’s red hot out there and two games in four days means spreading it around.

I am on livetv.ru and then a Crotian channel. All the russian streams seem to work.

Samaris from Benfica keeps being mentioned. Maybe he’ll be our next signing then.

Very mix n match team today. Giving the fringe one last run out maybe. I’d expect a more coherent set up on wednesday and sunday.

How can people be so blind?

The ‘No Pace’ thing is correct.

But It’s not De Jong & Mitro that were the problem.

    It’s the wide players.

Ritchie & Murphy are both slow.

You can’t play with no pace out wide.

Murphy will be a dud, mark my words. He’s so, so bad.

Yeah, Murphy’s really slow and really crap based on 45 minutes in the boiling sun. However, based on his career to date he’s neither. 🙂

I’m not judging Murphy on today. He’s just not good.
He’s slow and just cuts inside all the time. Not bothered about actually delivering the ball.

Yeah Beckham had one of the best deliveries ever. Murphy doesn’t deliver the ball.
