Darlow, Colback, Murphy, de Jong And Mitrovic Start At Mainz – Merino On Bench

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just named his side for the fourth pre-season friendly of pre-season against Mainz 04 in Germany this afternoon.

We now have three friendlies coming up in a short eight days, and then the lads have a rest of eight days as we prepare for our first Premier League game of the season two weeks tomorrow against Tottenham at home.

It would be good to win this game this afternoon to get the lads into that winning mentality.

Here is the team as just reported on the Newcastle United Twitter account.

After his excellent showing last week at Bradford, Jacob Murphy gets a start, and it’s a big chance for him to further impress.

It looks like Rob Elliot has the day off today so probably 45 minutes each for Karl Darlow and young Freddie Woodman in goal, who played well at Bradford City last week.

We also expect there to be changes at half time although maybe not as many as usual in this game?

It would be good to get the win this afternoon against the Bundesliga side.

Howay The Lads!!

Comments welcome.

Not the greatest display but it was interesting to see the players out there.

Atsu looked really good when he came on. Mbemba was class. I still think he’s our best defender in terms of quality on the ball and reading of the game. Hopefully he’ll start with Lejeune against spurs. Hayden looked pretty bad when he came on, he’s usually really assured. Merino looks like he has good composure but he was playing at CB. Would have rather have seen him in defensive midfield.

Who was calling Murphy slow? If he’s slow then I’m straight hahaha.

Hahaha yeah and i’m a toaster.

On your comment though…do you watch any rugby union? Nigel Owens, probably the best ref around, is gay. He was reffing a game last year, and during a scrum, the feed was crooked, and Owens said “Come on, lads, even I’m straighter than that”. Quality.

TikiTakaTwatta, just because your team lost 0-5 against Celtic C, does not make Murphy slow. What a prat!
Thought Aarons was a handful, but only got to see Thump’s link, VP or something, second half.

At least we can say it’s only pre-season but the worry warts on here have a few very good points. The squad is full of promising youth but very little dependable experience at the Prem level. A hard season ahead unless Rafa can bring 2 or 3 experienced players in.

Pitiful performance against Mainz who a disastrous defence and poor goalkeeping made them look like Bayern Munich. Woodmans appalling effort to stop the winning goal was appalling, but the defence was even worse. First half display was appalling.2nd half slightly better. Perez had a load of chances and fluffed them all. Didn’t look good

G2, spending’s not finished yet matey and I suspect Rafa already has players in mind to improve us. Still over a month of the window yet and prices will dip when managers realise they literally have to move certain players on, or be stuck with big earners not even in the 25 player squad. That’s normally when things start to move.
Fine for money bags teams to take first pick as usual, that’s life, but the window will spring to life towards the end like it usually does.
I’m just grateful we’ve got someone in charge now we can trust to see us right at long last.

I don’t think player prices will drop enough to matter for us Bobby mate. We just won’t spend the dosh required and we certainly won’t dish out the required salaries. We’re in a bit of a pickle I would say….

I think we might see Atsu start and certainly Merino won’t be in there that quickly kilcline. He might be on the bench. If we cluster tightly in our own goal we might be able to keep the score down……

Killer, can’t imagine we’ll see Shelvey that far forward mate, he’s needed where he is picking those passes. Think we’ll get a new No10 personally along with another striker, whether Mitro goes or stays. Might still see Ritchie there if needs must, with Atsu on the wing. Atsu on one wing, Aaron’s the other and Gayle through the middle is explosive for breakaway, which is how I see us setting up.

The ToonAlways look slow because they pass the ball sideways and backwards to often

Last season it did my head in it was if they were to frightened to try anything.

They have suppose to be some of the fastest players in the league .
In Yedlin, Atsu and Dummett for that matter but it ain’t help going sideways
All to often they don’ take things into their own hands and look for Shelvey – mark him out the game and we acan re knackered. Desperately we need another creative midfield player and a goalkeeper who can command the box and opass from the back

    Agree Charlie.
Must say that Lejeune is looking like a bit of a marauding cb, so long as he’s covered when he goes forward, I think he’s going to be a big plus for us in an attacking sense as well as defensively.
Murphy’s goals grabbed the headlines, but I think Lejeune could prove to be Rafa’s most shrews piece of business so far this window imo.

G2, we’ll see then. I still don’t get where people think we should get promoted and somehow take the PL by storm though. One of the most unrealistic expectations I can imagine.
Said it in May and repeated it since, this season is about staying up and getting established, just like every other team in our position. Tough season ahead, but I think we’ll be fine and finish higher than the other two teams who came up, along with a few already established sides.
This is basically the start of Rafa’s project and we’re starting from scratch, but he’s, capable of doing what he set out to do as long as fans are patient and don’t expect too much all at once.
