Newcastle Must Sign At Least Two Class Players For Big Money This Summer

There’s a report in the Express today that says that Rafa may try to take some players from Real Madrid and indeed we have been linked with one of their players so far this summer.

We’ve been linked with goalkeeper Kiko Casilla who Rafa signed for Madrid back in the summer of 2015.

The Express are quoting journalist Pete Jenson, who says he thinks Rafa could well use his contracts at the famous Madrid club, and indeed we need some class players brought in to add to the five we have already transferred in for a net of only £4.5M.

Rafa Benitez – wants more class in Newcastle side

Jenson had this to 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast:

“I think it’s one of a few Spaniards who might turn up at Newcastle.”

“There is overbooking at Real Madrid and Rafa Benitez does know the club very well.”

“I think winger Lucas Vazquez is another he might look at and that’s one of the advantages of taking Rafa as their manager.”

“He has that vast experience of European football and having been recently at Real Madrid, I think not just Spanish players but Madrid players.”

“That may be a way Newcastle can build this season.”

We’ve watched Vazquez quite a bit, and he looks a very decent player although he doesn’t get much playing time for Real.

And if Kylian Mbappe completes a move from Monaco to Real Madrid for some big money maybe he will become available, and we could take him on loan with an option to buy?

Newcastle are delicately balanced right now because we have five good players but we need at least two class players who will, therefore, be relatively expensive.

But we must spend the money available this summer.

What do you think?

I don’t know why we don’t look at Ajax more. The only player we bought off them was distinctly average, albeit solid and reliable, but this year we should’ve been looking at Riederwald (who went to Palace) and Dolberg is a striker to watch in the coming years.

You can just hear Ashley’s brain ticking over…..we need to keep the money to pay the wages next season if we go down again through not spending the money.

If we spend the money on decent players, we’ll be able to sell them to pay the wages if we do go down……..decisions decisions……PENFOLD, bring me a coin, you know I don’t carry cash ,if it’s good enough for lizzy it’s good enough for me

We need quality signings through the door, everyone who is honest with themselves knows we haven’t enough for the premier league campaign. Hope Rafa works his magic.

We didn’t play well, we lost, but I’m not about to lose my optimism over that. A friendly is a friendly. On to the next against Wolfsburg.

Rafa I’m sure will know what is needed and these friendlies have probably confirmed that. Again nobody truly knows our transfer budget, So hopefully Rafa is saving the best till last

Didnt watch the match as I was at work (boooo) but looking at the starting lineup it appears Rafa was hoping to give people more minutes and more chances to impress him. Lets face it, Colback and Diame will not be our starting midfield pairing against Spurs! We can all agree on that 100%. I like De Jong but I do think that with him and Mitro up front we lack pace.
I’m pleased with how we are going and i’m confident there will be 1 or 2 more signings to come. Its gonna be a tough season and our aim is only to stay up and then build. I think there are worst teams than us. Watford don’t look great, Swansea will likely struggle again, particularly with the Siggy drama. I dont think West Ham, Stoke or West Brom look any better than us. I actually think Huddesfield will stay up but Brighton might struggle.
Looking forward to the new season.
P.s What Newcastle players have people picked for their Fantasy football squad??!!

You’re right Toon KK. We have a net spend to date of £4.5M. I thought Rafa had been made £100M available to him. He’s funded nearly all buys so far from sales. Why are we looking at more goalkeepers & wingers ? We are awash with them.We need a recognised goalscorer. Bas Dost even if we have to shell out £40-50Million? I know prices have become ridiculous this year & Rafa appreciates it but if we can spend £8-10 M for players who haven’t played in the Premiership yet & Everton can pay £6M for a 17 year old defender who hasn’t come anywhere near our first team then what is the true value of a free scoring centre forward. £25M for McCarthy (Everton) is ridiculous. We need the spine strengthening if we are to be a mid table side.

With sdj getting more time can we expect him to be a starter more often than not.

If he can stay fit he is a talented player and dare i say it ” like a new signing”

I dont think its going to work with him and mitro but can see him and gayle scoring a lot of goals together.

Mitrovic does not score enough for our lone striker, never could never will. Move him on and throw Diame in for free.
Getting rid of colback will save us probably 10 points over the course of the season through his fouls in dangerous areas.

We need at few quality signings in key positions….and definitely an alternative to Shelvey!

Is merino going to be cover for jonjo or a new cdm ?? Rafa gave him a run out today at cb but i read nowt into that other than to get him match fit.

Mitro will score more goals when we play to his style of play he does hold the ball up well the way we set out last year but with our pace added on the wings i expect more from him this season.

Are we reading to much into friendlies? It’s a run around and important to build fitness some ppl need to relax.

If our CFs don’t score 1 game the blog goes up in arms, most important thing today is that players got good minutes under there belts and no injuries from what I hear. That’s all I expect from friendlies

Merino can play as box to box midfielder, or DM or CB. He can also cover for Shelvey if needed. The lad is a very good player, hopefully he settles in quick

Google has him as a cm cdm or left back
I wonder where he will spend most of his time playing for us..

Long passing is not listed amonst his stats so i doubt he will cover jonjo often.

Atm our main goal threat is Gayle, as soon as he picks up a injury we have no one who is so prolific , every player is capable of scoring but not a direct threat.
I hope we have enough money for a main striker with Gayle as good back up.
Tbh I’m not keen on Rafa’s back and sideways style of football but we’ll have to get used to it I suppose, with our pace we shouldn’t need to.

I think it’s more about the quality of players we have that maybe aren’t good enough to carry out rafa’s instructions to a tee. As we get better quality in the back and sideways passing will become better.

Patience is the key this season, it won’t all be smooth asking but important to stay behind the players, as for Gayle being prolific, yes in championship but hopefully he can step up in PL

I can’t argue with you there, Rafa was often baffled himself what was going on in some games last season, but like you say it’s down to the quality of our players that can’t really preform to Rafa’s style, so they hit a brick wall then back and sideways takes over. As for Gayle he is good back up and there’s no garentees of the amount of goals he’ll score. There is time yet for new players, I’m sure Rafa knows our weaknesses.

Allan looks really exciting, but I fear it’s only a matter of time before we hear he’s gonna cost twice the price mentioned at 10 mill…. If we don’t get Allan I think Matias Kranevitter would be an awesome option. I also think that to have Paul Dummett as first choice at left back just doesn,t cut it. I would bring in Jonny Castro from Celta Vigo and believe he would be brilliant in the prem. As a striker I think we should look at Lucas Perez. He’s hungry and excactly what we need to compete with Gayle up top.

Rafa wants a keeper hes said so often enough.

Losing in pre season and even in the early league fixtures while the window is open at least has the advantage of lighting a fire under Ashley and Charnley. Ashley will want a good competitive side. No way will he want to take unnecessary risks that might lead to another relegation.

Against that you really can’t throw money at it first season back, because there always is a the chance you’ll be relegated, and you can’t afford to be lumbered with expensive signings and big long contracts.

You need to take a calculated approach to spending, but losses let you know you aren’t there yet. Still two or three good players needed, and Ashley and Charnley will be getting that message.

Lots of reports linking us with Lucas Vasquez, another winger? Not sure we need him though of course he’s far superior to what we have, still looking to replace Ritchie when we desperately need a CF, DM and LB??? Very strange
