There has been a long running saga with Newcastle trying to sign Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo since last January, and the last we heard was that Newcastle only had the option of signing the 20-year-old outright this summer for £10M.
Liverpool presumably blocked Newcastle’s attempts to get the lad on loan for the season – but Ojo is still at Liverpool.
The Sun on Sunday a week ago reported that Ojo wanted to join Championship club Fulham on a season-long loan deal and that’s where it stands at the moment.
But there seems to be an update today – here’s an extract from this Sun report today:
Relations are strained with the Kop over the attempt (by Newcastle) to take winger Sheyi Ojo.
Newcastle could yet rescue that deal, but bridges will have to be rebuilt.
Not sure if we should raise our hopes that Newcastle can still sign Ojo who Rafa Benitez very highly and would love to have him permanently on Tyneside.
The deal to sign him for £10M would contain a buy-back clause in case Rafa makes him into a world-class player, but that’s hardly good for Newcastle.
It appears from today’s Sun report that Newcastle is still in with a chance to sign Ojo but surely those chances are now very slim?
Ojo was born in Hemel Hempstead and joined the MK Dons’ Academy when he was just 10 years old.
He showed how precocious he was at a young age and when 13, he had already played for the Dons’ U18 side and was even training with the first team squad.
Ojo then joined Liverpool as a 14-year-old for a fee of £2M, and even then there were some other big clubs after the winger, with Chelsea one of the clubs who missed out on him.
He came through the prestigious Liverpool Academy and made his debut for the Reds in January of last year.
Sheyi has so far played 13 times with one goal for the Liverpool first team but made only two appearances for the club last season.
What do you think?
