Is This 26-Year-Old Potential Bargain Buy On Rafa’s Wanted List?

At the end of June Newcastle was said to be linked with former Tottenham midfielder Lewis Holtby.

We thought at the time Holtby may be a good acquisition for Newcastle because of his Premier League experience, and he seemed a decent enough player while at Spurs.

The 26-year-old signed on at Spurs from Schalke four years ago but didn’t have all that much success in London

Lewis signed a four-and-a-half-year contract and cost Spurs £1.5M.

26-year-old Lewis Holtby while at Spurs

He was sent on loan to both Fulham and Hamburg before making the move to Hamburg permanent in a £4.6M move in 2015.

In late June Holtby was available for just £5M, apparently because he’s on high wages and Hamburg wants to get him off their wage bill.

He is reported to be an excellent professional who works hard in training so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Rafa could sign this player for just £5M.

He seems to be a consistent player for Hamburg, but we wonder if the players Rafa now wants to sign – maybe three more – will be high-priced players that will add class to the side.

That’s what we need.

That would not be Holtby, although he could add to the squad with his good play and experience at a relatively reasonable cost with today’s silly transfer fees.

He played 24 times for the German U21 side with 14 goals and has 3 full caps for his country.

What do you think?

I think our squad is still very weak in certain key areas. RB should be feeling very let down that he’s probably staying just for the sake of fans I think.

Looking at our squad on paper, it’s even weaker than the one that got relegated but we have a world class manager now. I hope this makes all the difference.

but overall, I think it’s going to be a long hard season scrapping for survival. i’d snap finishing at 17th place right now.

The good news, i would say we are one of 13 very average teams in the Prem, we only need to be better than 3 of those.

Some how I dont see Lascelles being Cap this season, Clarke IMO is better and this new French kid looks decent also, them 2 should be the first choice.

we lack in CMF, Diame and Collback are not good enough,

not to sure about any of our forwards in the prem, 3 are all different, but seem limited in what they can do, i dont think we will get as many chances in this league, so defense is going to be more important.

I think finishing 17th with really only striker as mitro looks like he’s away sooner or later and still not having a number 10 is aiming high right now. Rafa will know we are short. In fact he said 4 or 5 required before merino arrived. In the talk in he did I believe.

So i’d expect to see a striker,gk,number 10 and left back join before the window shuts. It’s pretty apparent that will likely be loans with a view to buying.

I’ve followed Holtby’s career for a while now. for 5m i’d love to see him here! He has more passion than Colback, as good a vision for a pass as Shelvey and more energy then Haydon. He’d be everything Saivet was Supposed to be and more. Over the years he’s done a good job at CM, AM, DM, LW and even played as a striker. He’s used to a relegation scrap as Hamburg don’t have a great team (like NUFC) and have been fighting in the bottom for the last few seasons…… every team should have a Holtby

Just a potential bargain buy then? Just up Ashley’s street so will probably happen. Are we now smaller club than :
Net spends (likely bottom half teams) so far this window
    Bournemouth – £12M
    Brighton – £11.5M
    Huddersfield – £11M
    West Brom – £22.5M
    Leicester City- £26M
    Watford – £21M
    Palace – £2.6
Burnley , Stoke ,West Ham & Southampton all showing net profit on sales far with Swansea breaking even.
Are Newcastle a smaller club (Net spend £4.5M) in view of these figures or do they simply lack ambition?

I was desperately hoping there was some truth in the takeover rumours, but obviously that was just another smokescreen by the f-t, odious one. Just how many stunts can this guy pull? As many as he likes would seem to be the answer. The carr legacy is really biting us in the backside now with z lister players earning and just sitting on fortunes. Even despite this, Ash will happily blow fortunes at the casino, but won’t support a manager who put it all on the line to come here. I thought the Chinese would save us, but sadly that has all gone underground too. 10 years of misery with Ash and still no end in sight.

Our performances in pre season friendlies of played 4 Lost 2 Drawn 1 & Won 1 not great. As bloggers are saying squad still no where good enough yet. Definitely need a proven goalscorer, a decent number 10 & cover for Shelvey. Think Rafa knows this but will Cashley support him?

@G: I agree, but by the same token he’d be a definite upgrade on Colback. If we can ship him out for the same price (or more) than we pay for Holtby, I’d be happy with it.

@West Lancs: I was thinking about this the other day. “Rafa can spend any money generated by promotion”, which gives us a lot less to play with than we thought. Assuming Rafa isn’t allowed to push us into negatives — or evens, for that matter — than our lack of movement in the transfer window makes sense, and could definitely be described as a lack of ambition. Thing is, I don’t think it is a lack of ambition. I think Señior Tubbs just thinks we’re too big to fail, and that it’s odds on we stay up.

    If that’s the case… yeah.

Anyone think we should be going all out to sign Kieran Gibbs? An improvement on if not at the very least strong competition for Dummett and also arguably on affordable wages given Arsenal’s pay structure. Seems like it all went quiet on this rumour earlier in the summer.

Perhaps you’re right Thump . Totally agree Colback way past his sell by date. Prices for players has been pushed to ludicrous levels & and can see some teams who are not successful actually going to the wall. We were prudent when got relegated first team & that prevented us from being another Leeds Utd. However at least the minnows of Huddersfield , Brighton , Bournemouth & Watford reshowing ambition. Whether it proves the correct policy will only show next May.

Kieran Gibbs would be a great buy Irish but I think wages and enticing him up north may prove a stumbling bloke. Can’t understand why we didn’t show any interest in the two former Arsenal full backs that have just left City on frees i.e Clichy & Sagna . I know they are both getting on a bit but their experience for even 12 months would have been beneficial.

I said before we were relegated, although it was a terrible at the time that we needed to step back to move forward, and the only good thing about relegation was we could compete on and off the pitch…..
Well after being promoted we are still competing with championship club’s financially and still have a championship squad.

So we haven’t got enough then Rob. We definitely need a proven striker & suitable cover for Shelvey as Cashley will sell Mitro if he can get anywhere his money back for him. Also a full back.
And Bladeuser your views on Cashley have been well documented in the past but there is nowt we can do about it I’m afraid. For your info Bournemouth are also interested in Demaria Gray a lightening fast U 21 international from Leicester who we would be worth looking at. Why aren’t we enquiring about fringe forwards at Chelsea and City on loan Batshuayi & Iheanacho? They could do a great job for us & wouldn’t cost a lot as wages won’t be huge yet

So true , so true Toon KK . I hate transfer windows. Always linked with so many high class players but always come up short when it actually comes to sealing a deal. Granted the window is open for another month but just wait 1st September for tiresome statement. “We identified several suitable players during the window but just failed to get them over the line”. Same old same old!

I too spotted Ashley’s reported commitment to support Rafa’s spending (‘Rafa can spend any money generated by promotion’).

We’ll chosen and crafty words which many assumed meant that the surplus from last summer’s window would go into the transfer pot. That’s probably been set aside to cover the loan Ashley made during last season. With people like Ashley, the trick is to analyse his language closely and cynically.

Ashley’s probably got Barnes keeping a tight rein on money and Rafa’ll need to live with that as Ashley continues to demonstrate any ambition or pride in Newcastle United.

Yeah West Lancs- Iheancho is one I cant understand- even if he wasn’t to move to toon, cant understand why he would move to Leicester. Granted they won the league but were almost relegated a year later. Clear for anyone to see that when they sold Kante that he was the reason they won half their games! With Mahrez likely to go, maybe drinkwater too it just seems like a daft move. Also agree re clichy/sagna or even tempt Zabelletta before he left. We are nearly overloaded with natural right sided wingers at the moment. Fearful w/o replacing Dummett we will lack the attacking threat down the left. Also not sure if HAyden and Colback will suffice in holding mid either. Overall, there is 30 days left but we need to see some faces leave quick and get some new players in. Be it loans or whatever.

Should have been clearer re my Andy Carrol comment.

I was suggesting that we bough Perez to compete with Gayle with AC replacing Mitro as back up.

clearly not in West Ham’s plans, delivers when fit. Could be the perfect impact sub.

My worry if we get shot of Mitro is that we will only have one type of striker. And many of those we are linked with are the same. Teams need a big man. We saw last season how Gayle was completely out of games at times.

He’s great on the counter and dependable as ever to convert but if we’re not attacking, these lightweight, pacy strikers contribute next to nothing whereas a big man up top can help you get on the front foot again.

    Boudebouz, Navas & Fernando
but were we ever seriously interested in them in the first place?
Yes Lesh & Thump – the slippery cockney at his old tricks again. Pity he hasn’t imposed Zero hour contracts (another favourite of his at Sports Direct) for some of these wastrels we are currently trying to show the door to.

I agree we need more new signings but we need to start seeing quality signings.
We have been linked to a lot of players but I posted a while back who i think are realistic (if not pushing it) signing that would see us in the top half.

Allan DCM/CM (has everything for 10m+), Aboubarka Striker (a beast with a good goal/game ratio 6-8m) Smalling CB (2 seasons ago man u’s player of the year, his time is up 12-15m) Amavi LB (villas outstanding prem player unti injured, Sevilla deal fell through. Loan) Nkoudou Winger (doubt he would be available now as he’s having a great pre-season with Spurs, who are yet to buy. Loan) Holtby CM/AM (steal at 5m)….job done

Mash likes a Gamble, he may for the sake of the status of the club put some extra cash in for our safety, BUT he’ll rely on other teams poor results.

I can see panic buying in January to try and keep us up.

But there is time yet so hopefully we can get the players we need. Here’s hoping!

Well put Irish. Kante was certainly the player to hold the Leicester title winning side together – not the same team last season. If Mahrez & Drinkwater go & with those two cart horses at centre back they are going to struggle. I also like the lad Demaria Gray who is angling for a move. He has pace aplenty & is an England U21 Int’l . We could do worse than look at him.

All but gone to Real Betis according to this :

“A trio of previously linked players look like they won’t be arriving at St. James’ Park this summer, with Montpellier’s Ryad Boudebouz on the verge of a move to Real Betis, whilst Manchester City duo Fernando and Jesus Navas are set for moves to Galatasaray and Sevilla respectively.”

In all honesty Real Betis aren’t a real big hitting Club in Spain are they? So, gotta ask the question why aren’t we enquiring?

Rafa made mention that he wanted everything in black and white before signing his contract. What if Ashley has a 5-10 million payment to Rafa if he fails to adhere. Still saving him a fortune.

    And Pards….
