Perez And Mitrovic Start In Strong Newcastle Side Against Hellas Verona

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has just named his side for our final pre-season friendly at home against Hellas Verona this afternoon.

After this game, we have our first Premier League game of the season against Tottenham at home next Sunday afternoon – and we cannot wait for that!

So far we have three wins, one draw and one defeat in pre-season, but the results tend not to be a mirror of how we will do once the season starts.

Hellas Verona head coach Fabio Pecchia while at Newcastle

Here is the team for this afternoon as just reported on the Newcastle United Twitter account.

We notice that Dwight Gayle is missing so we hope he’s not injured and will be available for the start of the Premier League next Sunday.

It would be good to get the win against the Serie A club who are managed by former Newcastle assistant coach – Fabio Pecchia – who is a good friend of Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez.

Howay The Lads!!

Gayle not even on the bench? Thankfully Mitrovic has been doing the business in preseason, he will be needed at this rate.

I think we’d all settle for that ratio in the PL!

Think that GK, back 4 and midfield is the one which will line-up next weekend, the no10 is up for grabs and Gayle will start over Mitro.

Dwight Gayle’s absence today underlines just how short #nufc are on strikers. Can’t go into the new season without at least one more new CF.

Yep, looks like Rafa sending Ashley and Charnley a not subtle message….we need another striker!

Gayle has a minor niggle & so other options being tried with Spurs game a week away. Rafa will undoubtedly be asked about him after. #nufc

What’s worrying is the fact we have only added a CB to our starting line up. I know we are crying out for a ST but can’t believe we haven’t got a LB in. Dummet is woefully short of top flight quality. He’ll be found out very quickly.

Think Gayle not being involved is a safety measure in case of injury seeing as we still have not brought another CF in. Thats how desperate we are for an extra proven goalscorer…fear not though there is still time even if we dont get anyone before the Spurs game

Mitrovic performances for Serbia have been very good. He is good enough back up for sure. We need a starter who is quality. The Joselu link is sickening.

    Ed

Dwight Gayle is missing so we hope he’s not injured? If he’s not injured, he’s been left out for a reason. Surely they wouldn’t be ready to sell him? Surely not, unless we can expect a Keegan-like ‘trust me’ plea when he sold Andy Cole prior to Shearer’s arrival.

Whichever way it goes, Rafa’ll still be wanting another striker.

Now that is wishful thinking. Dream on.

Anyone else having issues with the website? Seems to be struggling.

Also, it wouldn’t surprise me if Rafa is being ultra cautious to make a point to MA an LC.

And to think earlier people were telling me that Benitez understood the circumstances and was happy not to sign another forward until other players were moved out…

Gayle wing wrapped in cotton wool today. Just shows how light we are in the striker department – need one in this week for sure.

Mitro and Perez have shown glimpses of a decent partnership in the past – hope they bag a couple between them today to build their confidence.

wassup fellas i kind of wonder why mitro starts is rafa trying to show him off to buyers ??
i prefer mitro over gayle anyday anyway but it is strange ! the kid dont play all season
and now he is a starter. maybe rafa is watching over gayle because of injuries ?? anyway
hope it continues because no matter what many supporters feel about him i think we have
i very good player in mitro he can be really good.

    From the chronicle:

Rafa Benitez has urged Newcastle United supporters to stay positive about the club’s summer recruitment prospects.

The Magpies started the weekend in talks for Stoke City’s Spanish striker Joselu and West Ham United goalkeeper Adrian.

Benitez is waiting for news on bids for both players, but the Chronicle understands Benitez has made it clear to his board that he can’t start the season with just three senior strikers on the books in Dwight Gayle Aleksandar Mitrovic and out of sorts Emmanuel Riviere.

Benitez is expecting to sign at least three more players in the current window.

booboo, I could be wrong, but after the rumours of Mitrovic being offered to Turkish clubs, he looks to have knuckled down and is impressing Benitez.

Gayle’s hammy could actually be a blessing in disguise.
We know we’re too short up front, Rafa knows and soon the fatman will realise and do something about it … at least we hope so.
