It’s Worrying This Player Is Injured Before Season Starts – Points To Significant Newcastle Weakness

Most of us were surprised that Dwight Gayle didn’t make the squad yesterday for our last pre-season game against Verona and it seems his hamstring is bothering him again.

Dwight appears to miss portions of almost every season with hamstring problems, but it’s a little worrying he is injured before the season even starts.

We firmly believe this lad can score goals in the Premier League much like he did for us in the Championship last season when he scored 23 goals.

It would have been even more than 23 if he hadn’t been injured with that hamstring of his – he could so easily have topped 30 goals.

Dwight Gayle – such an important player for Newcastle next season

Rafa Benitez was asked after the 2-0 win yesterday what the situation was with our top striker – and this is what the manager had to say in the Chronicle about Gayle:

”It’s not his hamstring – it’s more the feeling that he has. He’s not comfortable and we don’t want to take any risks.

“Dwight is training with the fitness coach, so hopefully, he can carry on training this week. If everything is fine, I think he will be okay for Sunday.

“He needs the confidence to know he can sprint and do everything as he was doing before.”

“It’s a question of confidence, so we will carry on pushing him in training and hopefully we can get back the confidence.”

Dwight is such an important player for us this season – it’s a little worrying he’s already having trouble with his hamstring.

And it points to a significant weakness we have at the moment in the Newcastle team, and Rafa is desperately trying to sign at least one new striker.

Maybe we can sign 28-year-old Arsenal striker Lucas Perez – he would be a tremendous signing for us this summer.

With Gayle having missed most of 2017 through injury, we can’t rely on him. He’s at that age fast strikers start getting hamstrings every week. We need to buy a first choice striker. A good creative number 10 is essential too. Surely there’s a upcoming Brazilian or Argentinian floating about who can do the job. Other than that, I’m quite happy with all other positions, even left back & GK – although I wouldn’t begrudge an upgrade. Perhaps we need a back-up midfield enforcer if Hayden goes out, because if we need to use Colback for large spells we’re in trouble and I don’t think Shelvey Merino will work well together but I could be wrong.

this will be Mitro’s chance, and he also played in 5-1 before red card.

we will get a striker on loan. It’s safer not to spend all the money now, we still have january window.

Ashley, hiding behind the charade of making the Club attractive to investors is unlikely to sanction any major spend until some players are off the books. Some of those who are not in Rafa’s plans were bought under Ashley’s buy cheap sell high model and that model has proved to have been a disaster which he won’t want publicised.

And as for making the Club attractive to investors, it’s come to nothing there having been ample time for interested parties to have undertaken due diligence.

By bringing Barnes in with Charnley reportedly reporting to to him, a chief chief exec, Ashley’s got someone who can control spending to the point where any investor wouldn’t be interested in a potential relegation candidate. But, during due diligence, any well managed business must continue to strive for success rather than failure. But, where Ashley’s pulling the strings…….

What’s even more worrying is that it doesn’t even appear to be a physical injury, it is “just a feeling that he has. He’s not comfortable” so it’s a confidence thing, he thinks it will go again. The urgency to sign a new striker just became essential if he isn’t playing because he can’t trust his own hamstrings.

All these players who won’t play much are on big wages. My guesses are: De Jong (50k), Krul (50k), Colback (50k), Gamez (40k), Saivet (30k), Haidara (15k), Hanley (20k), Lazaar (20k), Mbemba (30k), Good (10k)…. I’d say that lot are on at least 300k a week, probably more. That’s 15m a year!!!

when do people starting to realize that we are not like PSG or Chelsea?
we don’t have that much money compare to those big clubs, we don’t even have the spending power like most clubs in PL, we just got promoted.
All clubs want to buy cheap sell high, that’s how you make profit. I don’t see anyone complaining about lucas perez and arsenal. If I’m not mistaken arsenal bought him around 5 million, rarely played and now asking for 13 million. it’s ok as long as it’s not Ashley doing it, right?

Profits on player sales are a drop in the ocean when compared with the prize and TV monies available through being in the Prem. If it’s a matter of priorities, Prem success must surely take precedence over insisting on profits on player sales.

It makes me wonder what Ashley’s playing at – is he doing his damnedest to aggravate the fans and at the same time, use his investment in the club as a tool to minimise any tax obligations?

A loan for Perez doesn’t make sense. The lad wants to go to Spain so to get him, he’ll have to receive an offer he can’t refuse. And more particularly, Arsenal want a fee for him.

I think Rafa is going to start Merino for Spurs. They have a high press and Shelvey is going to be man marked, he’s our obvious threat. So we need Merino to play those passes to increase our threat to there backline hopefully freeing up space for Shelvey. Rafa might suprise us and go with a 4-5-1. With Merino, Hayden and Shelvey in the team at once to pack the midfield. There wing play is really strong though, not sure how Manquillo is going to cope.
