Rafa Benitez’ Interview – Explains Newcastle’s Current Plight In Great Detail

It was Premier League launch day in London yesterday and Newcastle were represented by manager Rafa Benitez, new signing Jacob Murphy and last season’s Player of the Season Matt Ritchie.

Rafa spoke live on Sky Sports yesterday morning, and it was another fascinating interview with the man who can talk about football for hours and hours on end.

And often does according to Bob Moncur.

🙂

Rafa Benitez – Newcastle manager

Our game is being televised live on Sunday at home to Tottenham and that game has a 1:30 pm kickoff time.

It’s clear that Rafa Benitez has been frustrated by this transfer market so far and we just don’t seem to have the money this summer to bring in the quality of player that Rafa would like to bring in.

But the good news last night was that we have signed Chelsea’s 21-year-old Kennedy on loan for the season.

This is some of what Rafa said to Sky’s David Jones yesterday:

“The Championship is quite complicated but we did well. The teams, the fans, the city were together and that was crucial for us.”

“We had good players. The fans, we had 52,000 fans every game at home and especially the fans away – everyone was pushing.”

“The staff, the club – everyone was trying to achieve what we wanted to achieve. Only 33% of teams go back up first season, it’s quite complicated.”

“If you don’t go up, it’s even more difficult because there is more pressure.”

“The team is fine. Still we can improve – every manager wants to improve. But we have a good team and we’ll see if we can improve the squad a little bit.”

“The Premier League is a massive challenge, it’s another level.”

“It’s very hard. The prices are crazy. We missed some targets at the beginning and I think we are paying for that but hopefully we can find solutions to bring what we need.”

“Sometimes it’s not what you want, it’s what you need and what you can afford now.”

“It’s quite difficult for every team but especially the ones that do not have as much money as the others.”

“The teams at the top have put the prices so high that if you go for average players they ask for big money, big commission, big wages.”

“Everything is more difficult.”

“Sometimes you have to sign what you can. Then it’s a tricky question because if you sign players people will say ‘Is it the player you wanted?’”

“Maybe it’s the fifth on the list but he’s still your player and you have to support him and make sure he’s good enough.”

“We are trying to do our business.”

“The story is as I said before we missed some targets at the beginning and now we are trying to do our best with what’s available.

Rafa is an excellent communicator and he lays it out there about what’s happening in the market so our fans can understand a little better.

We should be much better off next summer financially and we will have to rely on Rafa’s magic to get the best out of the squad we have this term.

It’s not what we wanted but we can still do very well under the brilliant Mr. Benitez.

Comments welcome.

Yes we may have a lot more money at the end of this season (if we stay up) but who is to say Ashley will give it all to Rafa to spend? His promises aren’t worth a hill of beans.

I know Rafa wanted Semedo and yes as you say Abraham too. Not really sure who else we may have missed out on.

It’s funny but whether by luck or design Rafa has managed to keep to the players aged under 26 blueprint very well and for absolute peanuts comparatively. Rafa could have unearthed some real diamonds for years to come.

    Atsu 25
    Lejeune 26
    Murphy 22
    Manquillo 23
    Merino 21
    Kenedy 21

Plus many of them are seriously quick, something we’ve been missing for a long time.

Who Charnley missed out on and who we wanted could be two very different lists

    Sigurdsson ? ( not at £50 million )
    McCarthy ? ( still out there )
Barkley ? ( still out there)
    Abrahams ? ( good miss )
    Bas Dost ? ( who knows )

Plus at least another 100 so called targets – take your pick really h

No doubt mistakes were made…but question is what are they doing to rectify them?

…it can potentially end up being quite an expensive lesson!

Not condoning Kenedy but I don’t think the Chinese were ever seriously looking to buy us. It was seemingly just another ruse by Ash, so no harm done there I wouldn’t have thought.

Players I wanted but have gone elsewhere

    Hart
Reina (not sure if he is available now)
    Delphi
    Iheanacho
    Gray
    Hernandez
    Mangala
    Fernando
    Perez

    We got Murphy

I’m happy with the signings we’ve made but we need more

Rafa will want a number 10 and striker and a keeper. If he gets what he wants we will have a good season. It’s not over until the day lady sings.

Ron Knee, I’m sure it is Kenedy, one ‘N’, right? Literally a left-field signing… Again this demonstrates that nobody knows what Rafa is doing or thinking. Not one journo knew anything of this until he signed.

Anyways, be interesting to see what happens over the next 48 hours with new signings as I think Rafa’s message was loud and clear yesterday. We need a breakthrough with the striker situation as I’m not sure Gayle’s head is in the right place at the minute. The lad ‘had a feeling’ so didn’t play in the last friendly. Maybe it’s the club wrapping him in cotton wool but I’m sure Gayle didn’t play in some games at the end of last season as he didn’t feel confident in his hammy despite reassurances it would be fine. Come on Ashley, sort it out and get Lucas Perez through the door before Sunday and what an atmosphere it will be even if he didnt play!

As the premier league kick off fast approaches, for those that are interested I thought I might comment on the team rather than add to the anti Ashley propaganda.

Benítez has spent in the transfer market around £30m. This on Florian Lejeune a defender from Eibar, Javier Manquillo, a former Atlético Madrid right or left full back who spent last season on loan at the mackems, Jacob Murphy, a highly promising young winger from Norwich. Christian Atsu spent last season on loan at Newcastle from Chelsea; and Mike Merino, a Spainish Under-21 midfielder on loan from Borussia Dortmund with an option to sign.

With a world class manager in Benitez at the helm the squad might look somewhat ordinary. However, I see a squad well suited to a counterattacking style. I can see us doing much better at home against opposition teams taking the game to us rather than the numerous Championship sides we encountered at SJP last season.

The team could look very different with the signing of Pérez. Keep the faith in the team.

Kenedy is a wing back! a left wing back, wonderful.

Three centre backs now a distinct possibility.

    352, or 3151, or even 3511…

Kenedy to Ritchie to Kenedy to Gayle ……Goooooooooal !
Has a good ring to it

Has Rafa actually blindsided the pundits – six in, all young, dynamic, pacy and with energy to prove themselves
Add that elusive experienced striker and goal keeper and perhaps one more and we should feel elated that we have built a squad with potential based on that magical blend of youth and experience.

Games against Everton and their massive disproportionate spend could be a good yardstick to measure where we’re at .
