Is This Rafa’s Team For Our First Big Test Against Tottenham?

We are almost ready to embark on another season with Newcastle, and it’s a big step up from a year ago when we played Fulham at Craven Cottage last August in the Championship and lost 1-0.

That was followed eight days later by a 2-1 home defeat against Huddersfield, and the sky had fallen in on Newcastle.

But Rafa steadied the ship, and we won our next six games and went on to win the Championship!

This season we hope to have some points on the board after our first two league games.

We play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in what will be a sold-out and magnificent St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon, and we will do very well to get a point from that game.

Having looked at the Newcastle teams, Rafa has played in the final two friendlies we think this is the team he will start on Sunday in a game that will be televised live around the world.

Elliot
Manquillo Lejeune Clark Dummett
Hayden Shelvey (c)
Ritchie Perez Atsu
Gayle

That is assuming Dwight Gayle is fit from his troubling hamstring which kept him out of the last two friendlies.

If Dwight cannot make it, then he will be replaced by Aleksandar Mitrovic as the up front striker.

We expect new signings Florian Lejeune and Javier Manquillo to make their debuts for Newcastle and we have to think Rafa thought he would have maybe five new players making their debuts for the club on Sunday.

Rafa does hold his press conference today for the game, so we’ll look forward to seeing what he has to say – we expect him to be all business – as usual.

Hey – we’re back in the big time again!

Now to the central question – what is your team for Sunday?

Comments welcome.

I can see Rafa try to crowd them out in midfield, give Merino a debut alongside Hayden and Shelvey with a front three of Ritchie-Atsu-Gayle if available. Maybe im too optimistic but I can see us getting a result especially with Wanyama, Rose, Son, Trippier all unvailable/doubtful. We should surely target their RW if Sissoko and Dier are deployed there.

Early Bingo shout from ED- before Rafa’s press conference – 1.30 0n Sky.
Not sure about Gayle, maybe Mito, otherwise think the line up is spot on.

    According to BBC Ceefax:
‘Spurs chairman Levy is battling pay crisis in wake of Danny Rose’s criticism of the club’s ambitions’ (Mirror).
‘Rose got a “heroes’ welcome” from the Spurs dressing room, with team-mates threatening to speak out’ (Sun).
‘Spurs stars are lining up toleave because of the club’s rigid pay structure’ (Mail).
‘Spurs top international winger, Moussa Sisoko, wants to move to a bigger club with ambitions to win CL, stating he has always been a Real Madrid fan’. (Toontaff’s BS column)

    Seemsit’s all about the money,money.
Spurs are so close to winning things, but the greedy mercenaries are all after a bigger pot of cash.
    Walker, Rose……………wonder who’ll be next?
Hopefully destabilised their preparations for their visit to SJP?

I would say you’re spot on Ed.

I’m very concerned that we haven’t been able to sell many players yet. It’s getting late and we still have way too many players that aren’t going to be in the squad.

I think Ed’s team looks about right:

    Elliot
    Manquillo Lejeune Clark Dummett
    Hayden Shelvey (c)
    Ritchie Perez Atsu
    Gayle

The only doubts would be the fitness of Gayle and Lascelles.

Ordinarily Rafa would select his captain but he may not be fully match fit. Whilst Lascelles has been sidelined through injury Lejeune and Clark have played together in the pre-season games and must have developed some understanding of each other.

If Rafa has any doubts about Gayle them Mitrovich will play.

Team looks about right. But Perez will offer nothing around Wanyama & Dembele. He might consider Diame in there as he puts himself about.

Are we still doing bingo this year?

If so, my confirmed Rafa bingo team would be:

    Elliot
    Manquillo Lejeune Clark Dummett
    Hayden Shelvey (c)
    Ritchie Perez Atsu
    Mitrovic

    Ed’s with MItro.
