It’s Official – Rafa Confirms Jamaal Lascelles Will Remain Club Captain For Next Season

During his press commence this afternoon Rafa Benitez has confirmed that Jamaal Lascelles will remain the club captain for the coming season.

Jamaal has been injured and not played too many games in pre-season, and he will be hard-pressed to get his game if new signing Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark play well .- but then again Rafa could play three at the back too.

But then again Rafa could play three at the back a number of times this season in the PL after Chelsea were so successful with that formation last season in winning the Premier League.

Jamaal Lascelles – Newcastle captain

This is what Rafa said at his press conference today for the Tottenham game on Sunday:

“I’m happy to keep as Jamaal as captain because he was good last season.?”

“When you have new players, it’s important to have someone who knows what it means to be the captain of this team, what it means to help the others to settle in and what it means to push everyone to give everything in every game.”

“I think he was great last season and hopefully he will continue to be a good captain for us in the future.”

And Lascelles said this to nufcTV on how much he had learned last season when captaining Newcastle to the Championship in the second division:

“It’s not just on the pitch, wearing the armband – there’s so much more to it.”

“I feel like I definitely have learned a lot over the last year, how to manage players. I’m still improving, still learning and I’ll keep listening as well.”

We didn’t think Rafa would change the captaincy, but it will be interesting to see who he plays in defense in the coming season.

Jamaal is a born leader and has deserved the captaincy at Newcastle.

    Oh Dear ?!!!
If that’s the calibre of captain these days then I despair?!!
A championship player at best (at the minute) !!

Unbelievable. The 4th best CB we have got. Lejeune, Mbemba and Clark are all better than him. This means he will play and will be partnered with Lejeune I think. For me I would choose Lejeune and Clark (followed by Mbemba). This one I really cannot follow from Rafa…

    I don’t think M’Bemba is better
Jamaal was playing through the pain barrier for the final third of last season.

Good that his still captain..Tells it like it is,played threw a terrible injury for so long..Captaincy must be valued, earned and not just handed out..Onto our squad,Its way better than most people think. Its not top 7 material but we right there with the rest..Southampton,West ham and maybe les. City are the next best but we can easily challenge from there on with Rafa at the helm,I expect too..the rest of the teams have hard working average squads..We have a young squad that are playing together for the second season
There understanding of each other will be greater this season. Also within that squad most of them have even greater potential to improve. They do not have any ego’s,they work as a team and they are a hungry bunch of players, who wants success. When was the last time we had that..Then add Murphy, lejeune,Manquillo,Merino,De Jong,Aarons to that squad.and compare It too the bottom 10 of last season..We shouldnt be worried…I hope we do sign Lucas Perez..Thats the type of player our squad is missing, someone who can link up player, score and has pace..

Olanrewaju Kayode a young Nigerian striker who plays for Austria Wien (2nd last season in the Austrian Bundesliga ) is a bit of a scoring machine.
He is headed for the PL
Rumour has it that it’s NUFC !
