Newcastle Get Bizarre Draw In The League Cup

The EFL Cup (League Cup) is known this year as the Carabao Cup due to the start of a sponsorship deal with Carabao Energy Drinks.

The tournament was unsponsored the previous year.

They have also decided to split the ties into a northern division and a southern division to save on travel costs.

Newcastle drew Nottingham Forest at home in the second round of this competition last night, after two strange games against them last season.

The most bizarre of those being when we were at the City Ground and were down to 9 men by half time and a penalty was awarded each time a red card was given.

But goalkeeper Karl Darlow brilliantly saved both penalties.

After being ahead 1-0 at the half, we lost 2-1 with a late Forest goal.

That was maybe the worst refereeing performance we have ever seen.

But there again there was that home game against Burton Albion when the referee didn’t know the rules and gave a free kick to Burton after a Newcastle player had encroached into the area for the penalty Matt Ritchie had just taken.

The referee and his three officials didn’t know that the penalty should have simply been retaken.

Such were the adventures last season in the Championship.

Here is the draw for the second round of the League Cup with the ties to be played during the week of Monday 21 August.

We should be able to reach the next round.

Southern section:

Birmingham City v Bournemouth
Brighton & Hove Albion v Barnet
Cardiff City v Burton Albion
Cheltenham Town v West Ham United
Crystal Palace v Ipswich Town

“”Since they became a serious team under Mauricio Pochettino, one of Spurs’ biggest problems has been slow starts – they have won just once in seven August league matches in the past two seasons.””

I am tamely pawing at the odd straw here, but the first game of the season is always a bit of an unknown quantity due to the switch from meaningless friendlies to competitive league games.

Spurs are in meltdown at the moment no investment at all , star players wanting to leave and lots of injuries!

Perfect time to play them if we can get the first goal we could knock the stuffing out of them

Rose’s interview was Sissoko esque when he played for us ! Think Moussa will be playing right wing back against us hopefully Dummett lets him have it early doors with a fair tackle 🙂

I still cannot get over some of those refereeing decisions last season. We tend to forgive/forget because we were promoted but the sooner third referee video is added to the game the better.

On a separate note I can’t see any transfers coming in until after Spuds game. Hope I am wrong.

I think the first managerial sacking will be between Hughes and Shakespear. Or if W.Ham fail to start well they could make a quick change based on last seasons turbulence, although they won’t be playing at home for the first few weeks.

Achraf Lazaar was touted at €1.9 million
NUFC are prepared to accept €700,000 from Goztepe with more depending on games played

Lazaar looked potentially like he would be a good signing when we got him!!

Good on the ball and loves to attack but incredibly for a defender based in Italy looked soft in the tackle?!

Not sure how he draw has been done as burton is 20 mins from Derby and Notts and is in different section and West Brom are in the north despite being further south than Birmingham and Burton who are in the southern draw. Another well thought out EFL plan.
