Alan Shearer has delivered his verdict on Jonjo’s antics today when he was sent off – will be suspended for three games – and lost us the game against Spurs this afternoon.
Jonjo must get himself under control in these games but frankly, we cannot see it coming, and he will always be a liability to his team and himself when he’s playing.
Now we will miss one of our best players for three games to go with the five games he missed last season through suspension.
That is just pathetic Jonjo Shelvey ? #NEWTOT

Comment #1Blimey the bus is rattling along today!
I don’t think any of the Hollywood passes from anyone came off today, but the crafty little dink from Shelvey came close. When he gets it right he is a match winner and Spurs did a job on him today which is probably why he lost it.
I’m not looking to change my selection of him as POS, yet!!

Comment #2It’s back to musical posts. One match and the wheels fall off. But Rafa is quick on the recovery. And hopefully the injuries are minor.

Comment #3The main problem today probably isn’t shelvey, more worried about the two injuries to dummett and lejeune, think merino can be great for us as a replacement

Comment #4The Shelvey loss is massive. Merino has promise but he’s a guy who has pretty much zero elite level experience. I’m sure Rafa wanted to ease him in. Now it’s straight off the deep end and we need him to control a midfield on him own. What a mess already.

Comment #5i have some sympathy for players like shelvey, barton, bellamy and many more its how they play and get worked up as soon as they step over the white line i can guarantee you shelvey won’t be the same of the pitch but hopefully its getting worked on and he can channel it into something good
ben arfa for instance is the opposite he does all his shite of the pitch which has seemingly ruined his career

Comment #6Shameful from Shelvey and he’ll know that but if I’m to take any positives from this it’s the cameo performance of Merino who looks pure class? You can see by his body movement and first touch that he’s going to be a great addition. Hopefully the injuries aren’t too bad and talk of an incoming forward this week will help lift the gloom.
In Rafa we trust

Elliot continues to surprise me…but I get why rafa wants a keeper with great experience and distribution…to out the opposition straight on the back foot and make best use of our pacey players.
O knew merino would be top draw for us and he’s going to.
All the players need to learn not to let players rattle them.
We are still about 4 or 5 players short..
Keeper because rafa wants one
Left back even more so now
A number 10
2 x strikers.
The need for strikers. Gayle looked like he wasn’t ready yet.
Mitro doesn’t suit rafa’s style of play.
Before the game I was sure we’d be hard to beat and I was worried we would lack a cutting edge. There’s no point creating chances if you don’t have players to convert them and at this level they’ll be few and far between…
However…atsu was encouraging. Nobody let us down apart from shelvey who more than anyone let himself down.
Kane – that tackle on Lejeune he purposely lifted his leg to take him out. How is a tackle that caused someone to be injured (hopefully not for long as he’s brilliant) not worthy a red card when players get sent off for tackles that could cause injury.
Dele alli is an angry wind up merchant but you can’t let yourself be drawn in… for me the incident in the first half had shelvey rattled in the 2nd half.

Comment #8take the positives from the game.
Atsu played really well
Lejeune looked the part until he was hacked down.
Richie for me should be captain .
minus points
Shelvy, hmmm stupid
Perez, was he on the pitch?
Lascelles, not a leader and at fault for the first goal, dropped way to deep.

Comment #12The way we were organized suggests we’ll be hard to beat by lesser teams. That’s typical Rafa. But he can’t control cards and injuries. That might be our downfall unless we continue to strengthen the squad. I’ve been really disappointed that we haven’t been able to shed a few more players. It must be driving Rafa mad. And is Charnley up to it? I’m not sure as I never have been with him. Other than being an Ashley lackey I’m not sure how good he is at his job. Especially with the other dodgey Ashley lad hanging aboot.

Go all out to sign wilshere. A player with so much potential however is plagued by multiple niggling injuries.

Those on here calling for Shelvey t be sold are clueless. He is our sole playmaker and he will not be sold until we have a replacement and even then we’d need him as cover for his replacement. Merino sits deep and is an incomplete replacement for him. All transfer window I (and everyone else) have been calling for cover for him but we don’t have it yet. Strongly suspect Rafa is going to give him a right shellacking and pull the armband from him after he comes back from suspension until he demonstrates discipline (if he goes the way of Barton it will be a shame and horrible for us unless we bring in a proper replacement).
Those saying we will go down after one game are even more clueless misjudging both the game and losing all perspective to boot. We played a top 4 quality side to a draw at half-time and only lost down 2-0 after going a man down! 1/3 on our poll picked us to lose and that was before we knew what an idiot Shelvey would be and I bet many of them would have picked a scoreline of 2-0 with nobody being sent off.
We played, apart from that incident, disciplined football that stymied Kane and company! we had a good chance that Gayle would have put away if he were a top quality striker. If we get in such a striker before the window closes we’ll be fine. If we don’t get a prem quality striker it will be our lack of goals that will trouble us, not our defense or our playmaking on the counter-attack. BTW I have Gayle as our TGS in Martoon’s pool and yes Shelevey as our POS. Gayle willl be replced immediately if we sign L Perez as will TGS goals to something more like 18 to 20 because Perez would have put that chance away.
Anyway, will sit tight for Hudders as we will put them away we don’y need Shelvey for them Merino will do and see where we go from there. Biggest worry from this game is Lejeune injury. He looked Prem quality class till that scissor and if his knees gone well we won’t be the same at back 4 ;-(

Comment #19Shelvey doesn’t have the intelligence to make or find space for himself like top quality players do.
That’s why this league is beyond his level. He needs to have a nice cosy game wight players giving him plenty of space to look world class.
As long as he’s close down. He becomes useless. As well flog him

is that the colback who can’t pass or create, has no speed and gives away endless daft fouls, not to mention refused to train. Merino is 100 times the player colback will ever be.

Comment #21ilovetoon yes he does as he showed in his last season here he is always looking for space
just because he is up against one of if not the best midfields in the league doesn’t mean he’s not for this league
even after today, we’ll win more games because of shelvey than not

Comment #24Mariner bottled the red card that should have been handed out to Kane and on Saturday in other games that’s exactly what would have happened so we already have inconsistent refereeing standards.
That would have changed the game and it’s unlikely that we would then have seen Shelvey’s loopy behaviour.
Can’t be an excuse but there it is.
Many think that we need to accumulate a good points tally from our first five games and Shelveys cost us one point at least already and will miss the next three and his actions are beyond stupid. I thought the game had a one nil win either way or 1-1 draw written all over it and Shelvey goes and mucks it all up. Just wonder what the Triads have on him to make him do what he does. Idiot .

Comment #25I’m mildly encouraged with the defence today, especially given how makeshift it was. From my perspective both goals were down to a lapse in concentration from Manquillo, who twice let his man run past him all too easily. Other than that they were resilient enough. It was a pretty lacklustre performance going forward (Atsu aside).
Overall, Spurs are an excellent team and two-nil wouldn’t have been a disastrous result even if we hadn’t lost two of our defenders to injury in the first 30 mins and played with 10 men for 40 minutes. We just need to make sure we bounce back for Huddersfield.
Fans don’t half over-react on here. The people calling for Shelvey to be sold are pretty much the very same fans who just yesterday were saying Jonjo was our best player and the team should be built around him!

Comment #26Back from the match. More or less what I expected, though Shelvey needs to give his head a wobble. Didn’t see what happened from our spot in the Gallowgate, but even the camera man above access 18 had his head in his hands.
Atsu was far and away our man of the match, though he was amazingly wasteful throughout all of it. When he needed to hold onto it, he let it go, and when he needed to release somebody he more than often held on to it. Either way, he was definitely our bright spark.
All in all, not too disappointed with the performance. Lejeune kept Kane in his pocket right up until Kane halved him in the first half.
What happened with Dummett btw?

Comment #30We should be able to generate 6-7m with the following: Krul, Hanley, lazaar, saviet, riviere. If we could then spend 25m that leaves us with lb 5-6m then the rest split between st and cam. That will do it.
