Newcastle Fans Take To Twitter – Take The Positives – Some Good Performances Today

Everything seemed to go against Newcastle today in our 2-0 home loss to Tottenham the first time Rafa Benitez has ever lost to Tottenham in a Premier League game.

We lost Lejeune and Dummett to injury in the first half and then Jonjo Shelvey shamed himself when he stamped on Deli Alli’s foot right in front of referee Andre Mariner and was sent off.

Newcastle struggled after that and gave up two goals before Rafa went three at the back and brought on new-boy Mikel Merino who impressed in his cameo.

Javier Manquillo had an excellent game at right-back, and before injury new signing  Florian Lejeune looked our best player.

So Newcastle fans are right to point out the good things that came our of the game – we’ve still got 37 games to play and we are upbeat that we can still do well this term.

But owner Mike Ashley, who was at the match, must give his manager some help – and even borrow some money if he has to so he can bring some additional players in before the end of the month.

And fiamnlly from a non Newcastle fan.

We didn’t disgrace ourselves, well done Atsu.
Same problem that got us relegated is clearly there to see, no cutting edge in front of goal.
    Top quality striker needed.

We were well organised which was encouraging, Spurs were toothless when we had 11, would of been interesting to see how match would of gone if shelvey had stayed on the pitch. Some encouraging signs for the season made apparently the best starting 11 in the league look ordinary, negatives are obvious though lejeune, dummett injured and shelvey red card. Naysayers will be negative of course but no way will we be going down if we play that organised all season just discipline with shelve.

Those saying get rid of Shelvey are complete morons as well in my opinion

Just reading some of the posts. I cannot believe some of the pessimism that has set in after one game but that’s just my view. We will be a defensive team this season which will be tight at the back and attempt to get at teams on the break. Rafa has us we’ll organised and Spurs didn’t look like scoring. We were playing the team who finished second for god’s sake. With 10 men! What do people expect.
Merino looked good and hopefully that will give Shelvey even more reason to change his ways. He may not come straight bk into the team after his ban.
I also read that Atsu was the only one trying. Honestly were they even watching. Richie worked his socks off as normal. Hayden, Gayle and Perez also. I’m so disappointed that Shelvey let everyone down but we will be fine this season.

Don’t think the issue was the striker today it was just discipline, Kane should of scored but he missed a few still. We do need a striker but realistically we were looking for a goal from a set piece or on break with Atsu, will be different against the lower level teams in the league

I don’t think anyone who was honest with themselves expected a win against one of the best teams in the league.
First game of the season so a long way to go. But we need some quality players in or it will be a very long way to go.

I think all we can count on is a striker toon kk mate. But that is an absolute must. If Ashley doesn’t allow that to happen he needs to be locked up.

Well we could of nicked it the way the match was going, atsu was threatening on the break and we are dangerous from set plays, we just need squad depth in certain positionsand a good striker for me

I actually expected a 1-3 loss. No way we were going to beat Spurs with the squad we have. Rafa knew it was a long shot. And he knows we need a good striker. I’ve re-thought my top goal scorer prediction and I doubt our top scorer will get more than 15 if we don’t bring someone in. That doesn’t bode well for us.

Just got back home and am too angry to stay on. Just want to post that Shelvey is a disgrace. No excuses, he’s a marked man and given a dick like that ref a chance to red card him is stupidity. Mariner always wants to be centre of attention, just a shame he wasn’t as keen for the Lejeune tackle. Scissor tackle outlawed, yet he gives a yellow. Wtf?
Atsu – my choice for player of the season lol – awesome. Luckily Merino looks adequate replacement for broken brain. Captain? Don’t care how soft it was, he did it deliberately and cost us points.
Up until then they never looked like scoring and we always had a chance on the break. Fuming. AAARRRRGH!!!!!

There is no way we’ll get rid of Shelvey for one bad foul. We don’t have the resources to do that and Rafa knows it. Of course we’re all disappointed and Shelvey will have to pull himself together and be far more disciplined.

As expected a defeat. I thought it was going to be a 3-1 defeat. Not quite that but got the margin right. Posted from lovely bar in South West France. Vice last France.

I had actually looked away from the screen but I knew immediately who they were talking about when the word ”stupidity” was mentioned. JS obviously has an anger management issue and very low IQ.

To see that fat Ashley sitting smirking in stand makes my blood boil. Watched his only interview in about 10 years & what does he do? Plead poverty ffs, What happened to money from league & 60 mill from Liverpool & Spurs? If we dont get a strike who is over 6 ft tall we are in big trouble. Maybe being shown for what we are today is not so bad as it might make scrooge spend some of his billions never mind the 170 mil we are guaranteed for being in E.P.L. this year

Those on here calling for Shelvey t be sold are clueless. He is our sole playmaker and he will not be sold until we have a replacement and even then we’d need him as cover for his replacement. Merino sits deep and is an incomplete replacement for him. All transfer window I (and everyone else) have been calling for cover for him but we don’t have it yet. Strongly suspect Rafa is going to give him a right shellacking and pull the armband from him after he comes back from suspension until he demonstrates discipline (if he goes the way of Barton it will be a shame and horrible for us unless we bring in a proper replacement).

Those saying we will go down after one game are even more clueless misjudging both the game and losing all perspective to boot. We played a top 4 quality side to a draw at half-time and only lost down 2-0 after going a man down! 1/3 on our poll picked us to lose and that was before we knew what an idiot Shelvey would be and I bet many of them would have picked a scoreline of 2-0 with nobody being sent off.

We played, apart from that incident, disciplined football that stymied Kane and company! we had a good chance that Gayle would have put away if he were a top quality striker. If we get in such a striker before the window closes we’ll be fine. If we don’t get a prem quality striker it will be our lack of goals that will trouble us, not our defense or our playmaking on the counter-attack. BTW I have Gayle as our TGS in Martoon’s pool and yes Shelevey as our POS. Gayle willl be replced immediately if we sign L Perez as will TGS goals to something more like 18 to 20 because Perez would have put that chance away.

Anyway, will sit tight for Hudders as we will put them away we don’y need Shelvey for them Merino will do and see where we go from there. Biggest worry from this game is Lejeune injury. He looked Prem quality class till that scissor and if his knees gone well we won’t be the same at back 4 ;-(

Shelvey should be forced to give his wages to the other players this week. In fact if we could sell him and get Jota in to replace him I’d take it tomorrow. In any case Merino looked far more composed and effective.Shelvey’s stupid rash stamping literally cost us a point today as I couldn’t see Spurs causing us too much trouble even though they had most of the passing game. In addition Poster Boy Kane should have had his marching orders but there again the big stars get away with murder as we all know.
Shame about LeJeune – he really looked the part today.
Thought Atsu was great today – they couldn’t really handle him throughout the 90 minutes. Defence played really well and thought MbBemba was excellent when he came on.
Other observations. Perez too lightweight and Gayle ineffective although to be fair there wasn’t much played up to him. Don’t think Spurs will be a force this season. – wasn’t impressed.
