Poll – Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player Against Spurs?

Even though we were reduced to 10 men this afternoon when Jonjo Shelvey again showed his indiscipline there were some strong performances from the Newcastle players today in a game when everything seemed to go wrong for us.

We lost both Paul Dummett (hamstring) and Florian Lejeune (ankle) with injuries in the first half but were holding our own nicely until Shelvey, captain for the day,  was sent off three minutes into the second half.

Rafa will see a lot of positives coming out of this game even though we threw it all away and could easily have taken something out of this match.

Jonjo Shelvey shocked at getting red card – not sure why the surprise

Markaccus again your first reaction was to the initial response but the second post around that is the worst apology certainty was not. Either way it was clear after saying it was a reality check that I meant people predicting top 10. Atsu was the best player by a mile and Lejuene looked a rock I am praying he is back playing soon. On the other hand as I said we done ok against a team who will battle for top places as they never looked like scoring 11v11. I think it would have been a great game at 70+ if it was still 0-0 as it would have opened up for both sides.

Yeah ok you did correct it. I can’t be blamed for my responses, though. You still really shouldn’t start lashing out at optimistic fans.

Anyway lets just forget it? Bad day at the office because of Voldamort.

And to think he should have been our player but for some prevaricating by Charnley and Ashley.

Bet we wouldn’t be calling him the same names if he was on he of ours.

First thing Rafa should do Monday morning is put the Shelvey incident on a loop and make the whole team watch it for several hours with no breaks.

Apart from obvious Atsu, our GK, back four and Hayden deserve a credit.
Good to have a player like Clark, who can play lb.
I like Elliott, he is definately better than Krul in distribution.
Perez, Gayle played quite well, though not superb.

    Voldamort 🙂

I get frustrated when I see fans saying we should be finishing so high up when the quality is not there anywhere on the field. I look at sides who will battle relegation this season and we would jump at the chance to sign most of their players (teams like Palace we would have there whole squad almost). Lejuene looks like he could certainly play at a high standard but honestly Shelvey, Gayle and Richie our best players last season would struggle to walk in any other team in the league apart from the odd one.

This is a tough game to decide about the team. We lost two players (so, lost two late sub possibilities latter in the game) than lost Shelvey due to stupidity. We didn’t look great before we went down to ten, but neither did the Spurs. In fact, even though we had little possession and no real shots, we looked potentially dangerous on the counter a few times and I still think Gayle was on sides. The problem, we are now three players down with an already suspect bench. It will be tough, but it started tough lst year as well.

If we sign 2-3 good players I think we will finish around 15th which will be good as we can consolidate. Next year would be about adding another 2-3 high quality players and build from there. It will be 3-4 years before we can look at spots such as 8th.

There was only one player who really gave a 100%, Atsu.
Same old team that got relegated, basically not alot of cutting edge going forward.

I do think anyone who expects top 10 is setting themselves up for disapointment. It’s not moronic though, it’s just hopeful. Be honest, we’d love it if they are right.

infact the perfect tackle to give someone a cruciate injury but welcome back to the prem

Yeah, there was a lot of angst after the first two games but it came out right in the end, no need to panic yet!!

Funnily enough wasn’t one of our first two losses against Hudders, so it hopefully isn’t going to be a repeat. Although I’d take losing to them and finishing top again, how deluded is that? 🙂

And it seems that Abrahams was keen to join us but we wouldn’t pay his agent the commission he was looking for. How many more failed signings because of that I wonder? Is Ashley fighting a one man crusade against agents?

0-2 as I said but not exactly how I imagined. I’m afraid Shelvey really needs looking at cutting loose if he hasn’t learned to keep a lid on his petulant behaviour, you can’t have a player going off like a cheap banger and getting suspended in a whim.

The injuries can’t really be foreseen, Kanes challenge had enough intent because you don’t have to scissor found a players legs to complete a sliding challenge. Get real it was deliberate, you can easily let your trailing leg slide behind you no need for it to get involved.

The problem will lie in the exposing of our weakness in squad depth. Maybe even with Rafa going cap in hand to Colback dear oh dear that will be awkward 🙂

No you are kidding, for as optimistic as I still am, I would’t even be able to dream that. One area where my optimism is a bit shattered was my pick of Shelvey for POS – he will have a long way up to reach that. I also picked Mitro as top goal scorer, would be nice if he got on the pitch, but two injuries and a red will not be the norm – I hope.

merino did seem quite slow tho but very tidy on the ball
certainly looks a deeper kind of player so don’t see how he replaces shelvey
we need him and someone who can do the box to box stuff plus a number 10 and a striker at least!!
    fusk you ashley!

On a positive, we only lost 2 nil. Wasn’t the cricket scoreline some mugs had us down for. 2 nil against one of the best teams in the league with 2 forced changes in the first half and playing with 10 men for half the game. Very respectable from the rest of the team. Hope shelvey has the balls to admit his mistake and apologize to his teammates and the fans.

Manpixie have you watched Shelvey that last 2 seasons? There is nobody in our midfield who plays a deeper role than shelvey even Hayden has been the one bombing forward. Merino is an exact replacement.

I’m not sure Ashley knows or cares enough about football in general or NUFC in particular to realise that his lack of investment could put him back in that awkward spot he’s been in twice before.

I get that he’s had so much flak from the fans for his misdemeanours that he insists the club runs its own business and pays its own way but surely he understands how close the club is to tipping point? One or two more injuries and we could be in for a very dry first three months and a dodgy league position to drag ourselves up from.

I hope Ashley doesn’t dig his heels in about the book balancing lark again.
