Rafa Benitez Not Happy With Shelvey – He Let Everyone Down

Rafa Benitez was not too happy after the game today because we lost a game we needn’t have lost if Newcastle had kept their discipline on the field.

And as it turned out it the captain for the day – Jonjo Shelvey – who let us all down this afternoon with a stupid stamp on Dele Alli’s foot that reduced us to 10 men just three minutes into the second half.

At the time the game was very level and up for grabs.

Rafa Benitez on the sidelines today

We watched the video of this interview and Rafa looked annoyed with the way it had all turned out.

You cannot shoot yourself in the foot and be happy about things.

Rafa was asked after the match (as reported in the Chronicle) if he thought Shelvey had let him down:

“It’s not me, it’s everyone.” “We have been talking about that for a while.”

“He knows that he had made a mistake, he apologized, but still we lost the game.”

“Also, I would like to say that the tackle from behind by Harry Kane I think was worse, but the rules are the rules and we paid for that.”

“I had to change one player and Dele Alli had nothing.”

“We cannot change anything. Now we have to move forward and think about solutions.”

As you can see there, Benitez thought that Harry Kane was lucky to get only a yellow after a wild tackle on Florian Lejeune which had the Spaniard leave the field in the first half with an ankle injury.

Not sure how bad that injury is – hopefully, it’s just bruising, but Dummett also left the field after just 6 minutes with a hamstring injury and the local lad will be out for a few weeks.

haha catchy yeah thats right the guy has been in football for most of his life
    but still stealing a living
how about you actually understand wat he does and is there for
instead of ridiculing him for something that he doesn’t
its like dummett he gets stick for 1 bad pass but no praise for his defending or infact his decent crosses that he puts in

    manxpie,

I’ve kept it in for a long time but jeez it’s empty vessels like you that rattle the loudest.

let’s be honest you rated pardew and now colback, so your starting position doesn’t really chime with most knowledgable observers who actually know their football and if Rafa thinks colback isn’t good enough for a squad of 25, desperately short on talent guess whose opinion with credibility I’d prefer.

To lose 2 defenders to injury is bad luck.
Shelvey he has always had in him
Whilst it’s wasn’t pretty we were doing ok till the red card
The 2 injuries really limited the options for rafa for the seconday half
The worst thing is shelvey will miss Huddersfield a league cup game and wet spam
Huddersfield and wet spam possible 4 points there made tougher with shelvey missing the league cup game he might have been dropped anyway

    Just got in from match

Looks likes our injury hoodoo strikes again less than 45 minutes into the season
    Along with the red mist
Thought we matched the Spuds first half even with loosing two of our defensive four. Mind you thought they looked sluggish – more interested in niggly little fouls, whinging to the ref and getting people booked – Ali main culprit all afternoon
Didn’t see what happened to Dummett was following the game but Kane’s tackle on LeJuene was a shocker – if that had been Mitrovich he would have been sent –off.
Then the NOB Shelvey gets himself sent-off straight after half-time.
To be honest I do NOT want to see him a black ‘n’ whit strip again – get rid.
At the same time Ali was lucky not to get a yellow card for turning around and shoving Hayden in the chest – mariner only giving him a talking to.
Also not much up front when you play Gayle and Perez up-front – Me would of started with Mitrovich and Gayle or Perez.
After Shelvey got sent The Spuds controlled the game without being brilliant.
Defence left with no cover until Perez was hooked for Merino who did more than Shelvey did all game.

    Here goes merit marks
Elliott 7 – did OK – pulled off one excellent block from Kane distribution better than normal with a couple of excellent throw outs – but needs to be quicker to make his mind up and humping it in the air to Gayle waste of time.
Manquilla 7 – did OK looks good going forward and can pick a pass not sure if was at fault for one of the goals as the ball got a slight deflection.
Clark 7 – steady as a rock all game
Le Juene 7 – Looks class had Kane in his pocket and kane knew it until his cycical tackle. Hope he is not out to long will a big miss
Dummett – not on long enough
Lascalles 6 – looks slow needs more match time but did OK switched off for their first goal
Mbemba 6 – did ok but again looked slow needs match time to get his match fitness back
Atsu 9 Man of thematch by a mile caused the Spuds defence trouble all-afternoon.
Had brilliant run and pull back across the box but Gayle couldn’t keep up or not up to match fitness or read the situation
Shelvey 1 for pulling the shirt on – did nothing all afternoon game passed him by except for one pass late on. Got caught in possession to many times – NOB
Hayden 8 – had a excellent game in midfield got in amongst the Spuds midfield – disrupted them time and time again and made good use of the ball
Perez 4 – largely anonymous ran round with little impact twice first half took the wrong option should of passed inside to Shelvey and got a shot off but dallied on the ball to long
Gayle 5 – Still rusty – not up to match speed yet and easily bullied off the ball.
Ritchie 6 – Got in a lot of work on the wing linked up well with Manquilla but little end product.
Merino 7 – that’s for the last ten minutes did more than Shelvey in that time good passer of the ball set up a couple of decent attacks and always wanted the ball and when he did not have the found space to receive the ball.

RAFA 7 – seemed to have changed the style of play – playing with a higher tempo – might of started with Mitro as he is match firt and adds a bit of muscle upfront – perez and Gayle to lightweight together.

Marriner 3 – let spuds get away with far to much yet pulled us up time and time again. Could of easily give Kane his marching orders Oh I forgot he plays for England

I’m not having a red card for that tackle at all like.

If it was Lejeune on Kane the vast majority of this blog would see nowt wrong with it. (Especially Manxpie)

He should be far more annoyed at Shelvey for the most ridiculous blatant red card you’ll ever see.

I have been thinking about Shelvey.

He can on his day be excellent, however against better teams he is found wanting. For what we get from him it’s not worth his petulant behaviour.

Rafa will not take this and I hope Merino can step up. If he does let Shelvey sit on the bench and in January (when hype calmed down) let him go.

This all based on Merino doing well and us not needing Shelvey. He will never learn and Rafa won’t accept this.

    Imo

Fat man cannot compete with Citeee but he is not competing with Huddersfield. Fat man out!!!! Still staying away whilst fat man laughs at us all the way to the casino. Expect a 20 million signing in the last week to keep the sheep happy.

so belfast its a red for standing on a player but not a red for a career ending tackle??
the same happened when arfa broke his leg people saying dejong got the ball
it doesn’t matter it should be about the force and the actual intent
kane could have tackled cleanly with 1 foot he didn’t he decided to swipe with his other leg and wiped lejuene out and in doing so gave him no where to go resulting in him twisting his knee or ankle or both
    which equals a terrible challenge
and you still think mitro’s stud down a shinpad is worse!!?

A lack of goals gets teams relegated. Gayle will be injured half the season. Once the hamstring goes a fast player is always on the table. viz Owen, Bellamy and Dyer. Mitro will score a goal every fifth game. Where are the goals coming from?

Petulant intentional fouls get you sent off. They do not have to be career threatening. All players know the score. Thats why Shelvey is a numb nut. Gob on somebody and you are off. Kick somebody or stamp on somebody off the ball and you are off. Everybody knows the rules.

considering 2 subs due to injury and player sent off and playing a top team it’s not overly worrying yet as it’s only first game of the season.

however if it was possible to sell Shelvey i definitely would as his lack of discipline and not the for the first time is completely unacceptable. shows what a devious nasty person he is.

cahill over the top but misses the player red card
    arfa snapped leg nothing
taking your shirt of yellow do it twice red!
surely safety of players should be paramount

I think this could be a blessing in diguise.
Shelvey was very ordinary in the first half.
Mikel Merino when he came on oozed class , he’s a big cut above Shelvey.
Rafa’s hand is now forced .
Mitro has to play ahead of Gayle who looks to have lost his nerve.

Despite all his antics and flaws Shelvey is not a dirty type of a player. He is not of Pepe’s and Nigel de Jong’s type.
I remember when Mitro was sent off couple off times two years ago, all will be forgotten in time.

For me kane should have got red. Ali should have had @ least a yellow . Jonjos i missed at the time but have seen it since and its red all day long. Atsu best on the park. We could have nicked that game based on 11 men after jojoe went it was hard to limit the damage. All said n done we didnt do that bad and i still think we will be ok. Gonna be a fight but we are up for it and will be hard to beat. Hwtl.

Shelvey’s stupidity is compounded by its timing. Just after half time no reason for him to be so wound up he does something like that.
Such a big season for him. ‘Getting back in the England team ‘ an objective. Given captaincy and responsibility from Rafa and he pays that back with total and utter stupidity.

    Disgrace

New signings look good and hopefully not out for long.

Shelvey can go and think on his sins but given he hasn’t learnt his lessons thus far you can only assume he never will.

A liability we can ill afford.

I think the conversation after the game betwen Rafa and Big Mike would have been very interesting.
There could be a big chunk of SD shares up for sale on Monday morning
Ashley has 310 million shares in SD
closing price on Friday was £4.17p
It would take the sale of less than 12 million shares to raise £50 million for Rafa
I wouldn’t mention it but Ashley in his interview opened up this line of thought.

Amazes me how people can shout for Shelvey not to pull the shirt on again? The blokes class and is unique in that he’s one of the only players who nowadays looks first for a through ball rather than the crab like clones who infest modern day football and prefer the possession game.
Loved the look of Merino and Manquillo but obviously we need a striker in and sharpish as there’s no hiding the fact we’ll struggle this season.
I’ve been away from the island 23 years now but still get back 3-4 times a year and always go into the Gallowgate. Of course I care about who runs my club and the fact Ashley could be making a huge mistake by not spending enough but to stay away from the ground until he leaves puts serious question marks on the loyalty of those willing to take that stance? Sorry but I for one could never do that, regardless and before anyone jumps on my case I remember the Seymours and McKeags???? Ashley is a godsend compared.

I can’t argue with those merit marks mate. Atsu was outstanding. MOM by a country mile. Seem to play I hell of a lot better when Merino came on and think Rafa switched to wing backs which gave Manquillo licence to bomb forward.

Shelvey you absolute cock. Hope your ashamed of yourself. Merino plays like he did today for next few games and Jonjo is gonna find it hard to get back in the starting 11!!

Just got in and tablet on blink and I’m still foaming!!

Can’t expect my view will be much different to anyone who was at game but here goes.

Even despite defensive disruption we stuck well to task and Rafas game plan. Haven’t seen anything on TV or read Newsnow etc yet but from where I sat Kane’s tackle looked naughty and maybe should have been red? Will look tomorrow as can’t face anything tonight after match and slow journey home.

Suffice to say up until Shelvey involved himself with Alli we were looking towards a nil nil or a goal win for either side. Nothing great but Spurs were rusty and being confined to long range efforts with Elliot not really troubled. My blood is still boiling over Shelvey being sucked into stupidity and he should know better what Alli and Kane can be like – for god’s sake he was captain as well arrghhh!!!.

When Merino came on looked tidy and mobile always looking for and to receive ball and arguably did more in his cameo than Shelvey did in his nearly an hour,- might be my judgement is being affected by the red card but that’s how it still feels. Would serve him right if Merino takes opportunity to cement a starting place at Shelvey’s expense.

Defence looked ok with Lejeune (until clattered) and Manquillo doing well. Atsu caught eye up front but dwelled on ball a little long at times. Perez was Perez and Ritchie didn’t get involved much up front but I liked his attempts to keep us going when down to 10 and was tigerish playing deeper. Gayle didn’t see much of ball and any long ones were easily cleared by Spurs CB’s their full backs looking more likely to give us some joy. Hayden was good.

Basically I felt we were likely to earn a well fought for draw until Shelvey’s madness as the defensive reshuffles forced on Rafa meant we couldn’t do much to change offensively even though we started with some good options.

Will perhaps only recall game as the one Shelvey cost us .!!

Oh apparently one of our former stalwarts was playing ,- wouldnt have known apart from the booing and name called out on substitution. Nothing new there then.
