Rafa Benitez was not too happy after the game today because we lost a game we needn’t have lost if Newcastle had kept their discipline on the field.
And as it turned out it the captain for the day – Jonjo Shelvey – who let us all down this afternoon with a stupid stamp on Dele Alli’s foot that reduced us to 10 men just three minutes into the second half.
At the time the game was very level and up for grabs.
Rafa Benitez on the sidelines today
We watched the video of this interview and Rafa looked annoyed with the way it had all turned out.
You cannot shoot yourself in the foot and be happy about things.
Rafa was asked after the match (as reported in the Chronicle) if he thought Shelvey had let him down:
“It’s not me, it’s everyone.” “We have been talking about that for a while.”
“He knows that he had made a mistake, he apologized, but still we lost the game.”
“Also, I would like to say that the tackle from behind by Harry Kane I think was worse, but the rules are the rules and we paid for that.”
“I had to change one player and Dele Alli had nothing.”
“We cannot change anything. Now we have to move forward and think about solutions.”
As you can see there, Benitez thought that Harry Kane was lucky to get only a yellow after a wild tackle on Florian Lejeune which had the Spaniard leave the field in the first half with an ankle injury.
Not sure how bad that injury is – hopefully, it’s just bruising, but Dummett also left the field after just 6 minutes with a hamstring injury and the local lad will be out for a few weeks.
