The Stoke Sentinel are reporting that Newcastle transfer target Joselu has successfully completed his medical on Tyneside ahead of his move to Newcastle United for a fee said to be around £5M.
The Potters had already given permission for the player to speak to Newcastle after rather lengthy negotiations with Newcastle – and it looks like the fee has been agreed, and wages have also been accepted by the player.
The news in the Sentinel is that Stoke wants to complete the loan signing of Jese Rodriguez before they allow the transfer of their 27-year-old Spanish striker to Newcastle.
Joselu hasn’t done very well for Stoke since signing for them from Hanover two years ago, and in 27 appearances he scored only four goals.
But in preseason he scored four goals and looked good – but now it sounds like the 6ft 3ins tall player is on his way to Newcastle and that will be much to the relief of Geordie fans.
27-year-old Stoke striker Joselu – passed medical at Newcastle
One of our weaknesses last season in the Championship was our inability to put away the many chances we created, and the big Spaniard is good in the air and can score goals under the tutelage of Rafa Benitez on Tyneside.
A similar kind of player last season – big Irishman Daryl Murphy – did well and scored a good six goals for us in just 17 appearances, and we look forward to Joselu being another good signing for Newcastle this summer.
At the very least Joselu will give us another option up front to go with current strikers Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic., and it wouldn’t be too surprising if Rafa tries to bring in another striker this month – on a season long loan deal.

Comment #4A clear sign of our ambition. I’m not saying we need to splash out but he was done nothing in 2 years to warrant a move to us.

Comment #5If Rafa thinks he’s the man then go with it. I saw enough of our other signings on Sinday to know that Rafa knows a player and seems to have a strategy in place for the season ahead. The interesting question now is whether we can get Wiltshire Kenedy or Gibbs “over the line” as I would guess Lucas Perez is now destined elsewhere?

Comment #6It’s underwhelming, but I’ll give him every chance.
I know he is better than his goal record over the last few years makes him appear.
His hold up play, his ability to bring others into the game and create chances too.
Good in the air, strong, good runner.
And he has been clinical, he did get 40 in 72 for Real Madrid Castilla, which is when Rafa was first interested in him.
Since then it’s sort of been 1 in 3 average, at best.
He’s Murphy’s replacement, hopefully.
We need more. Last season 6 points.. SIX POINTS… separated 17th and 8th..
A few draws, not being wins, could see us relegated or top half.
A marquee centre forward / Number 10 is what we need.
With so much cash in the game / tv deals.. Why take the risk?

Comment #7Is he any better than Murphy.
Daryl that is.
Well, probably yes.
One out, one in.
Have we improved ?
Who knows.
This is as good as it’s gonna get, unless the club is bought by some big hitters.

Comment #9Repost:
Just read that stoke forum pasted on the last thread. Stoke fans seem to rate Joselu a lot higher than Berahino. To be fair to the lad, the bit I have seen of him play makes him look decent in the air, but average elsewhere. I can see why fans are not too overwhelmed by him. The only concern I have is a CV which includes 4 clubs in 5 years, which is never a very good sign in my opinion.

It’s not that Rafa thinks he’s the man, he’s having to make do with the poor situation we’re in.

Comment #12One game in and nothing to worry about, Spurs are now one of the top four team in the prem, if you remember spurs were us five years ago. Nothing great until they got there manager and he fixed things at the club. Big Mike was at the game, afterwards he must have realized that we need to get in a few more players to compete. We now have Rafa, he is working with a tight budget that Mike may add some money too, even if he does not our only goal this year is to stay in the prem and get some big money at the end of season were we could go after the real players Rafa wants at the club. We all know if he had the cash he would be spending it on 15 – 20 Million players. As for Jonjo, I hope Rafa drops him for the next 6 games, not just the three the league will give him but another three for being an idiot. Hopefully our new signings can shine in that position and its hard to get that nutcase back into the team, don’t get me wrong Jonjo on his day is class but he lets everyone down on the day he was made captain and that’s a no, no when you play for Rafa and the Toon Army, First Rule of Premier Fight club is you don’t get sent off for stupid shite.

Comment #16I’m gonna pit my neck on the line here……I think this is a good signing.
If he can play as ST and Gayle as no10 then it’ll reap rewards, good player who does have issues with consistency but if we are willing to give manaquin a chance……sorry manquillo, then it’s only right to give joselu a chance

In 27 appearance Joselu scored an amazing 4 goals for Stoke! Am I missing Ed’s point or something?
Another thing, where is Jesolu that different from Mitro?

Comment #19Shrewd move both for player and NUFC
He’s ready to get back in the groove and with Rafa and other Spanish connections is going to be happier here than Stoke which isn’t difficult but his whole lifestyle and wellbeing will improve being here.
Also no danger of rocking the changing room or wage structure with wonderkins or wannabe superstar rejects. Seems unlikely that Petez will come now and that may have been a smoke screen if he’s thinking of going back to Spain but let’s see.
Three more signings this week and the Shelvey fiasco will recede a little faster and more positive vibes abound.
No negative waves, Moriarty !

Comment #24Did anyone watch the MA interview? Did they honestly expect a £20 million signing?
For me, I cannot comment whether or not he will produce, but to me he seems like a back up player.
Next game (if injuries are long term):-
Elliot
Yedlin – Mbemba – Clark – Manquillo
Hayden – Merino
Ritchie – De Jong – Atsu
Gayle
Darlow, Lascelles, Gamez, Diame, Perez, Aarons, Mitrovic

I do wonder if this £5m was going to be spent on the striker who ended up at Man City (Olarenwaju Kayode)

Comment #30Rafa cutting his cloth according to Ashley’s measly measure.
We’ve been weak in the air, relying on the likes of Lascelles and Clark to get headers in.
I think – I HOPE – it will make a significant difference.
But we need another.
The bullshit about Kenedy – and he appears on Chelsea’s subs bench – says it all
