Rafa Benitez Explains Why Newcastle Cannot Sell Their Fringe Players

There was news today that Newcastle could be close to a transfer breakthrough and that some of our players could be close to finally leaving Newcastle in the next few days.

But Rafa doesn’t exactly agree with that and thinks some Championship clubs who are interested in some of Newcastle’s players will wait until the end of the transfer window to save on wages.

Newcastle players like Grant Hanley, Tim Krul, Sadio Haidara, Achraf Lazaar and Henri Saivet are available, but all are on high wages and not exactly keen to leave Newcastle.

That’s a problem for the club, and it’s been an issue in the past too – when we have tried to unload unwanted players.

Grant Hanley – available for transfer

This is what Rafa has said today as reported in the Chronicle:

“The Championship teams – normally what they do now, they wait. They wait because of wages. If they buy the player one week or two weeks after, they don’t need to pay the same wages.”

“We have some players who maybe have good salaries for the Championship while maybe Premier League teams are not interested. That is the situation.”

“The market has changed and prices are so high. If you can kick the ball forward, they will ask for £10M. If you put the ball in the net, it’s £20M.”

“I think each case will be different. You cannot say ‘You have to do this with these players’. Maybe some will have offers and others won’t.”

Rafa needs to sell players early if he is to use the transfer money to bring new players into the club, but that doesn’t seem to be happening his summer.

What do you think about this?

Speaking of Murphy, 2 goals in 2 games for forest. Man is still in his prime. Glad to see as he was a good, albeit short tenured, servant.

More from Rafa: “oh and also some of the players we are trying to sell are crap. They were crap when we bought them and they’re crap now. But mainly it’s because of the wages…..

I notice we didn’t have any trouble selling Daryl Murphy who was and is a decent striker.

Expect to see a whole bundle of players go as sale day closes. Colback, Hanley are easy sales imo they will appeal to any championship club – Colback could go back to the dark place or hit treble 20 by going to Smogton-upon-sea. What’s the score with DeJong though? Was Rafa just giving him a last showcase in pre-season?

Gayle (constantly injured), Mitro (can’t keep his head), and Hoser Loo (a 1 in 6 or 1 in 7 scorer). Why would we worry?

Although I have said Hoser Loo will get 8-10 goals if given enough match time. That should make up for a top striker signing. Who needs 20-25 when you can have Hoser Loo for 5M?

G2 he only needs to score more than four goals to better Michael Owen for value. I think he might just do that.

Just read the waffle section of the Spurs report on NUFC.com, anyone still trying to kid themselves that all is well at the good ship lollipop needs to have a rethink, while Mikey is gleefully peddling his CL ambitions on Sky TV he didn’t even speak to Rafa after the game, so where that puts the Rafa gets on really well with Ashley whether you like it or not stance, I’m not so sure.

If Hoser Loo turns out to be a younger Daryl Murphy he will be worth the 5M. If he turns out to be an older Xisco then it’s a different matter….

    Repost

I was just about to post Diame as a sub but in all honesty when you look at that squad it’s pretty thin once you take away the likely leavers / dross.

    Gaps are

New keeper if we sell krul and loan out woodman
New left back if we sell gamez, lazaar and haidara
Unbelievably Cb if we sell hanley
CM competition for Hayden if we sell colback
Striker regardless of who we sell
Number 10 even if we keep de jong

If Kenedy is incoming that’s probably left back sorted
Lots of work still to be done.

Jail what’s up someone put vinegar in your banana milk shake? 🙂

I thought it was clear that Mike’s “hands off” running of the club meant strictly no interaction with the help. Rafa is in charge of things in the sense Charnley has the right to say there’s no money when Rafa asks for it. But he can have all of it of course.

Don’t forget despite his shortcomings Owen scored 26 in 71 for us Tsunki mate. And for a bargain price and wage as well! Rafa would have had him flying for us (now and then when not injured or sulking that is).

I’m not mocking it G2 I have respect for our Canuck brethren once removed. I was on the silver & blue from Jasper once and went to dinner – sat down in the dining car, all very quiet and reserved, when an American couple came in and well let’s say the decibels raised a bit as they chatted. I looked around to see not a few Canadian eyes roll and a few murmured tut-tuts ha ha. They are almost more British than the British lol. That might have sounded a bit diningcarist. Sorry

That’s a good story Tsunki. I had a similar experience on a train from Vancouver to Portland. The American people behind us were very loud and constantly bragging about how many houses and vehicles they owned. It’s not uncommon. There was the occasional Harrumph! coming from me let me tell you.

    Jib,
I’m not that dense, I think your continuous gaffes would rate you way higher on the densometer, considering Mikey had just been talking about CL football and all the decisions he’s made over the years it’s pretty clear he’s pulling the strings, if Rafa was running the football side of things then why wasn’t/isn’t he happy the way they have done things. It’s also obvious now that what Rafa was told in their meeting in May isn’t how things have turned out, you’d think Mikey might want to hang about and explain why.

G2 – I miss counter. Once left back in we have cover at cb again. So that’s sorted by Kenedy coming in.
CM – is probably going to be saivet which I find hard to stomach as cover.

I suspect after Kenedy it’s likely to be a keeper and another striker then all out goings.

I’ve always found we have more in common with the Canadians than the yanks depending on where they are from in the USA. I went to Cancun once walked in with some great Canadian guys chatting with us from the coach in and a yank heard their accents…came bowling over and said to one Canadian….are you Canadian….we are protecting your country….or should i say shouted as speaking is not as loud. Que massive argument and for the rest of the holiday it was Canadians and Brita one end of the bar and yanks the other.
