Alan Shearer thinks it’s going to be another long and hard season for us in the Premier League.
Hope not – we’re sick of struggling in the top-flight.
But that’s his verdict after watching Newcastle struggle to score against a Huddersfield side at John Smith’s Stadium this afternoon in the 1-0 loss.
We had the chances to score, but we don’t have enough players who can put the ball in the back of the net.
Newcastle icon Alan Shearer
Dwight Gayle doesn’t look physical enough playing in the Premier League.
On the evidence of the first two games it’s going to be a long, hard season for @nufc #HUDNEW

Comment #4It was a poor performance today but I am not getting to worried, yet. Can’t believe some on here are having a go at merino, didn’t think he was great but not many played well. I said it last season and will say it again HAYDEN is awful. People need to long at him rather than Merino. I’d honestly rather play Colback.
I also think Darlow should be starting better all round keeper than Elliot who can’t kick the ball staright. It was woeful watching his distribution today.

Comment #5Mbemba was our best player by a mile today.
where did Diame come from. he is beyond poor, slow , poor touch, steve harper says he is like a rolls royce. hmmm
People can look at transfers , but first they should look at the starting line up, if most of us can see Perez and Gayle don’t work, surely Rafa can too. Joselu could and should have started, with either of Perez or Gayle.
Atsu seems better on the left and Ritchie seems better on the right, but spent most of the game on the the wrong wings and not getting the ball.
I’ll keep saying it, lascelles is not anywhere near the class of the other 3, he looks like a clown ? lost on the pitch, he thinks he can bring the ball out, but runs into trouble most times, he cannot head the Ball, he gets bullied very easy, he never knows who to pick up and looks like a dithering fool. and he is captain

Comment #6Didn’t see the game, but from what I have read, discounting the more hysterical stuff, It is patently obvious that the problem lies in creating chances. We have known this for months. I agree that Rafa needs to stop picking Gayle and perez as the 9-10 combo. The defence today was out of his hands due to injuries, and isn’t actually a massive problem, but scoring clearly is. we need a creator on the field, and any money we have left now should be forked out on that. Scratch the sale of GKs, as the ones we have a good enough for now. WE…..NEED…TO…SCORE.

Comment #15I am with a lot of people on ere that Gayle is not cut out to be a lone striker in the prem. If Rafa is going to persist with him, surely it’s time to either give him a strike partner, or play him as the no.10 with a better suited front man.

We lost by a single goal away from home to quite a good shot by Aaron Mooys
Mike Ashley wasn’t playing in the defence

Comment #21Sorry, but Rafa needs to change his tactics. He can’t keep playing Gayle, Ritchie, Atsu. Ritchie is a winger who keeps going backward, Gayle is a waste of space, Atsu tried his best but needs different options. You can’t play Gayle as main striker, he won’t win any headers no matter how good the crosses.
Maybe Rafa needs to try Aarons, Murphy, with Joselu &/or Mitro (442), or even try play SDJ (451).
I really think Gayle will be good as a sub rather than as starter.

Comment #25We knew it was going to be a struggle even if Rafa got proper support. I think as the season goes on it’s going to be obvious the club needs major investment whether Mike wants to do it or not. We aren’t good enough as it stands. With Shelvey and Lejeune back in we’re a little stronger. But our striker options are far too limited. This won’t go away. Either we get a couple of very good players in or we are in a relegation fight again.

Comment #26I think Ritchie has to go into centre midfield or play in the number 10 role. We only had one threat down the wing and that was Atsu. For me Ritchie is wasted out wide, he isn’t in the game enough.

Comment #27Rafa knows how to organize a starting 11 but he has said repeatedly that we need better players. This isn’t doom and gloom it’s just a statement of fact. You can’t get by in this league with Gayle, Mitro, and Hoser Loo.

Comment #29It doesn’t matter who Rafa starts the whole squad is championship quality and no more, it will be proven as the season go’s by.
When a squad lacks quality there’s only one way for survival and that’s hard work and determination, something Huddersfield are putting to there advantage, maybe we could learn something from them.
