Who Was Newcastle’s Best Player At Huddersfield?

Let us know who you think Newcastle’s best player was in our narrow 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town today.

For the second time in successive seasons, the Terriers have beaten us in the second game of the season.

It was a close game but once again – like most of the games of last season – Newcastle couldn’t take the chances we created.

And with about 20 minutes to go when we were 1-0 down to an Aaron Mooy goal after 50 minutes, Ayoze Perez blazed over the bar from just six yards out – an astonishing miss by the Spanish striker.

We need at least one striker brought in this month – and maybe three or four more players if we are to do fairly well this season.

Aaron Mooy scores the winner today

    Willow cont.

My nan can see Diame ain’t going to change the game and she’s been dead 20 years!
Overall I thought mbemba had a sound game. Perez brushed off players on three occasions first half but faded second, Ritchie did loads of work but set pieces poor. Merino at fault for goal but despite missed passes grew into game . Gayle too bulked up scared to run. Lascelles thinks he is beckenbaur. Manquillo trash. Josleu tried. Murphy on after Diame my point. The rest below average but Willow that’s just my opinion x

Rafa is a top class manager with a great squad at his disposal, not our championship second rate bunch.
    Expect relegation.

    Missed two buses!

Only difference between the two teams today was that they took their chance, we had a lot more clear cut chances but fluffed most of them.

Best player for them was the ref.

All in all we weren’t too bad against their twelve players.

Diame has to have been the worst player on the pitch, doesn’t look good enough for a Sunday league pub team.

    Ritchie our best player.

Isn’t it nice to see that all of our fans are level headed enough not to panic and are prepared to give the gaffa time to sort out the issues we have, seriously, if Rafa keeps it as it is but uses Ritchie in the middle dropping Perez and bringing in Murphy and then ram home the message that we have to break in numbers with pace then I do believe that we will be all right, and for me the breaking out in numbers was the only big let down for me as defensively I thought we were ok.

I suspect some here didn’t watch the game. Because if you had, you’d realize just how poor we were and you’d at least sympathise with the upset people.

Of course it’s just the start and it’s similar to last year’s. Frankly it’s way way too soon to worry about points. But it is about performances that we need to be concerned.

Our defense isn’t that bad although we could’ve improved it in the summer. Wasn’t urgent. The new RB looks half the player Yedlin is.

What needed to be improved is in the rest of the field and that hasn’t happened.

Today, if fit, Rafa should’ve played Murphy Mitro, even Aarons and Yedlin. We look slow and with no creativity.

Diamé plays well in about one in four matches. Rafa rolled the dice and lost.

Very true that was the only difference today they took their chance.

In saying that it looked like 2 championship teams playing, no where near enough quality on show to think either team will be comfortable this season.

Honestly toontaff its ridiculous on here. But it was obvious it would be.

Looking forward to seeing Joselu next game, everything he hit was on target.

I voted richie but believe he was on the wrong wing for a lot of the game he looked a lot better when he switched sides.
The new lads looked ok merino is always looking for space but his final passing let him down a little bit. Josulu looked ok i would like him to get a full game soon to boost his fitness and sharpen up a bit.
We need a new keeper who can kick a ball or bring freddy through sharpish.

You’d think we were bottom of the league in January after reading this blog.

    ‘expect relegation’

Everyone on here already knows you like to be the bearer of bad news. But seriously? Spreading that already? Pathetic.

Shows how much people actually know/think think they know about our squad, Ed ran his poll on how we’d do against Huddersfield, a vast majority actually thought we’d win!!!

    No chance.

Elliott: OK but distribution needs improvement.
Manquillo: Not Premiership material. Poor buy by Rafa.
    Clark: Steady as usual
    Lascelles: Steady
Mbemba: Surprisingly good given he is a right footed centre back not a left footed left back.
Hayden: My MOM. Never shirks a challenge. Always gives 100%.
Marino: Improved considerably as the game progressed. Excellent left foot.
Atsu: Only comes alive playing on the left wing. Please note Rafa.
Ritchie: Lot of energy. Excellent attempt on goal.
    Perez: Ineffective.
Gayle: Very poor. May not be Premiership quality.
Joselu: Encouraging. Did more than Gayle.
    Diame: Ineffective
    Murphy: Too late to judge.

Rafa: Not good enough. Gayle not good enough in Rafa’s 4-2-3-1 formation to be the single striker in the Premiership. Mitrovich better in this role in away matches. Perez far too similar to Gayle. De Jong perhaps better or even Ritchie especially at home with two wingers either side (Atsu or Aaron’s and Murphy).

    There WASN’T a “best player”
All pitifully poor and LOOKED like an understrength Championship side.
It would be better to have a “Who was worst”
Not ONE got higher than 4 out of 10 in that team today

as I’ve said a number of times before…there needs to be the option of “no-one” in these player of the day votes.
Several had good games. Several had poor games. No-one had a great game.

As other posters have commented, it is very early in the season to get too pessimistic.
Its not the fact that we have lost the first 2 games…its the manner in which we have lost them…and when you take into account the last 10 games of last season, the same problems remain the same…
we have very little pace, or moments/players of skill, or power/brute strength. Any of these will get you goals, but we are lacking in all 3.
we are a slow, small, lightweight team with no real players of outstanding skill.
