Benitez In Late Move To Sign Top Target – Could Be Huge Lift For Newcastle

Rafa Benitez’s main goalkeeping target this summer has been his former goalkeeper at Liverpool, Pepe Reina,  who has extensive Premier League experience.

Rafa has also said he is a real leader off and on the field, but we had given up all hope of signing him after a long drawn out saga with Napoli this summer.

But news in the last day or two is that Pepe is now willing to put in a transfer request to force a move out of Napoli, and he wants to join Newcastle.

We can only assume that Rafa has been talking to his former goalkeeper lately and Pepe could become a big player at the Tyneside club.

The 34-year-old was signed by Rafa for both Liverpool and Napoli, and this would be the third time Rafa has signed the talented 35 times capped Spanish International goalkeeper.

Pepe Reina – ready to hand in transfer request to move to Newcastle

Given that Reina could be a huge player for Newcastle in the next couple of years at least, we hope Newcastle don’t show their penny-pinching ways again but quickly agree on a fee for Pepe and get him to the club.

There’s a two-week International break coming up after next weekend’s games, and that’s time for any new players to quickly get acclimatized to life on Tyneside.

Pepe Reina seems just what we need plus maybe three or four more good players coming into the club before the end of the month.

What do you think?

My head was burning myself when i saw Atsu and Ritchie playing in the swap position for long.Everyone could see they didn’t look flair & comfortable.Atsu was dancing and looked a threat last week down the left.He was wasted yest’y along with Ritchie. These two are probably the best players in the squad. If he can’t use them properly,I have no idea where the assist and goals will come from. And Huddersfeild were crap. Can’t see them surviving.Mooy’s moment of class & brain use lifted them in the first two game.

Said it last season I’ll say it this season – can RAFA not see that Perez and Gayle cannot play together in the same team = lightweight – piss poor together as I said before the game – we’ll loose with them to playing together – what has Mitrovich got to do to start – at least he would of given us some muscle and height up front for the HOOOOOOOOFS and can keep hold of the ball.

Feel sorry for Mitrovich does not start or come on overlooked for Jusrol – why bring Diame on go two up front and have a go – all to easy for Huddersfield defence today.

Sorry RAFA’s Tactics – tactics – same old same old every game
One up front game after game whatever the opposition its one up front.

Could see that MOOY was running the show given far to much room – At half time get someone to sit on him/mark him but no got the freedom of the pitch all game.

We go one down stick rigidly to the same system formation tempo. Sacrifice one of our centre halfs and have a go – Me would of hooked Gayle for Mitrovich – stuck Perez along side him – pushed Merino further forward. Just do something instead of like for like.

Gayle will get nowt this season playing by himself up front – Premiership teams are to savvy and looks like he has lost a couple of yards of pace or frightened his hamstring is going to go.

Whole team looked lightweight give the ball away far to easily – knocked off the ball
time and time again – could not pass the ball to one another.

ARGHHHHHHHHH – shit today and play like that we will be lucky to reach 20 points if we do not strengthen the squad in the next 10 days or so.

Please RAFA on wednesday night try two up front – it might work!!!

Footnote: We need to sign a midfield enforcer type of player – like a Tiote in his prime – our midfield was made up of players who like to be on the ball passing it but not up to shadowing opposition winning the ball off them and passing to the ball players.
Maybe just maybe we missed Colback or Goufran from last season doing that job yesterday.

Maybe just maybe Raf was trying to send a message to Charnley and Ashley – How do you expect us to succeed with these bargain players – Let’s hope so otherwise I agree with Veltman and Charlie Same old Same old Rafa is supposed to be a tactician, so why did he not change the tactics here? It’s going to be a long hard season.

My conclusions from watching the game yesterday:
    1. It does not matter whether you play Atsu left or right wing, he is not good enough, not smart enough and not consistent enough to play in the Premier League. He has no end product, he does not recognize basic things like an overlapping runner. He overruns the ball 70% of the time and the other 30% gives it away cheaply.
    2. Merino was a big disappointment yesterday for me. He looked off the pace completely, so I hope it is just a question of getting him up to match fitness. What was really worrying was how sloppy he was in possession. I dont know how many times he gave the ball away, but he showed a range of ability to do this, from a misplaced 5m pass to an aimless 50m lofted one.
    3. Mbemba was quite solid on the right. He also showed a willingness to get forward, although was missed time and time again by Atsu.
    4. Lascelles is a time bomb with the ball at his feet. He is 100% committed, great in the air and a solid tackler, but we are a disaster waiting to happen when we try to play it out through him.
    5. Clarke was solid. Didnt really but a foot wrong.
    6. I worry about Manquillo defensively. It was hard to say how was specifically at fault for the goal. I suppose either Merino or Hayden should have been closer to Mooy from the start, but it was a one-two down our right that did it.
    7. Perez was anonymous. He can not and should not start in the 10 role, particularly with Gayle up top, who was equally absent.

I really think we have to get smart about life back in the Premier League. We should have been bullying their back four, who to be fair did not look that great. We just did not really test them at all until Joselu came on. Yesterday’s game was winnable had we showed some more ambition.

I am a massive fan of Rafa, but he got it wrong yesterday. Maybe to make a political point or maybe just stubborness, who knows. But we were dog awful to watch. If this is the prognosis for the rest of the season, then it is going to be a long one…

Reina’ experience will help I am sure but we need a marquee signing added to our attack. Defence not too bad once we get injured players back.
