Poor Show All Around By Newcastle – Lose 3-2 AET To Championship Club Nottingham Forest

Newcastle United are out of the League Cup (Carabao Cup) tonight after giving up three goals to Championship side Nottingham Forest who were the better team on the night and we lost 3-2 after extra time with the score 2-2 at the break and after 90 minutes.

A crowd of 27,709 witnessed the game which was Newcastle’s third defeat in a row and unless Rafa can quickly turn this thing around we could be in trouble this season, although of course there is still plenty of time for the team to improve.

But once again owner Mike Ashley is playing it safe with the club’s money and he has hardly shown any ambition this summer whereas other smaller clubs like Huddersfield Town have and have spent more money – a club that hasn’t been in the top division since 1973.

But on this showing, we don’t have good enough players for the Premier League although Rafa made a full 10 changes to the side that were beaten 1-0 by Huddersfield on Sunday.

Mitrovic gave United an early lead after just 3 minutes with a good drive following a cross from Rolando Aarons, who had an excellent game tonight.

Rolando Aarons congratulated after scoring great goal

But after 30 minutes it was Forest who took full advantage of really terrible marking at the back by Newcastle.

It was Cummings who scored with a header after 29 minutes and then a long ball beat the Newcastle defense and Cummings was there again to put the ball over Darlow and into the back of the net.

Rafa Benitez was beside himself on the touchline after witnessing such schoolboy defending from his defense.

One bright spot for Newcastle was the play of Rolando Aarons and he scored a terrific goal just before the break to make it 2-2 as he hit the ball into the back of the net from outside the penalty area in the first minute of added time.

Newcastle tried hard to win it in the second half but just before the 90 minutes was up it was Cummings again who hit the bar and that was a let-off for the Magpies.

But then 8 minutes into extra time and it was Walker who hit the winner for Forest who deserved the win against a poor looking Newcastle side.

This did not look like a Rafa Benitez side at all.

In truth, it was a really poor show by Newcastle and the mood of our fans will hardly be good after our third defeat in a row this season.

So much for winning anything this season too since the League Cup was our best chance.

But we shouldn’t  get depressed – well not too much anyway.

🙂

Did we say this is not the way we expect his season to start?

Teams:

Newcastle: Darlow; Sterry (Lazaar, 58), Hanley, Mbemba, Gamez; Saivet, Barlaser (Hayden, 70); Murphy, Diame, Aarons (Ritchie, 76); Mitrovic (Joselu, 105).
Subs not used: Woodman, Lascelles, Manquillo.

Nottingham Forest: Smith, Lichaj, Mancienne, Osborn, Fox, Clough, Brereton (Walker, 77), Dowell (Hobbs, 62), Bouchalakis (McKay, 46), Cummings (Murphy, 96), Worrall.

Like i said, cups should not be the priority this season. The squad is weak & full of championship players that won’t compete in the important league.I am happy we are out so that it will make Ashley panic and release more funds to strengthen the squad with established players.Unless of course he doesn’t bother about losing that big tv money. Was he at the game?

This club is submerged in a cloud of doom and depression. If we don’t get out of it soon with the aid of some promising new signings and 3 points against West Ham I’m afraid it will be all over by the time 2018 comes round.
Our first team is barely good enough to compete and our reserve team is a long way below that.
Hope our tight, rotund owner is proud of himself although I am certain he doesn’t give a s**t.

I never thought i would say this before the season kicked off but if we lose to WHU on saturday i truly believe Rafa will consider his position and you cant blame him really but all hell will break lose if he decides to walk a lot will depend on what happens before transfer window closes

@toonacious: I thought I heard Ando say that he had a bit of cramp. After a season or so of not playing, I think a bit of cramp at the end of 70+ minutes is good going.

Looking forward to the West Ham game good opportunity to put 3pts on the board, league cup doesn’t matter whatsoever only priority is the league, hence why Rafa played worse than 2nd string he probably wanted us out the competition.

I wonder if Southampton and Watford are having similar meltdowns to us?

I don’t even think I’m going to bother watching Newcastle this season as I can see it as a massively infuriating season ahead with defeats coming on a regular basis and wins once every blue moon. I have enough stress in my life without having to deal with another frustrating and relegation dogfight Newcastle season.

I am getting tired of this club been run as a business by mike ashley, and I’m constantly frustrated with the poor quality of our squad we have had for multiple seasons in a row, we badly needed to get shot of alot of players currently taking up the wagebill and championship players getting games for us but still we have the same players as we had when we went down,

we needed big name signings to keep this great club at a stable level but yet again we have been let down by the owner who promised to give rafa the money to buy players and hasn’t provided it, it looks certain to be another relegation season and we are going to be a yo yo club although next time we won’t have a top class manager in charge to get us out of it this time. angry is not the word.

From what i heard on commentary he has to change formation and tactics for Saturday it is time for Mitro to get his chance its not as if we have a lot of options we are now in the Premier league and to loose 3 games in a row is a hell of a mountain to climb especially with so called lesser teams bagging more points (and spending more money on what it seems are decent players) we just CANNOT afford to lose on Saturday or we are deffo in deep dung

Right bud, cheers for that. I heard on the radio that the commentator said when he was taken off he walked straight down the tunnel and he was shaking his head. I wasn’t sure if he was annoyed at being subbed or annoyed because he was injured again. By all accounts, he is one who has a chance to add something to the first team.

The only time Ashley will panic is when he can’t find a pint of lager to wrap his chubby fingers around.
That’s far more important to him than NUFC

They have introduced a new rule in this cup that if a game goes to extra time then you can make a fourth sub during extra time. I’m not sure if the FA Cup is doing the same.

Runaway777 – Apparently there are new rules allowing 4 subs once the game goes into extra time. That is according to the commentators on Radio Newcastle.
Just means we can bring on even more dross.

RUNAWAY777 I’m not pressing the panic button i’m confident of a result against West Ham, they’re missing a lot of players and we made Tottenham look ordinary when we had 11 just put that defensive display on again and play either Joselu or Mitrovic instead of Gayle to get us up the pitch effectively and we can easily win games

We desperately need pl proven players in this window, loan to buy for James McCarthy, Shane long, Ashley Young, Kevin miralles, Charlie Daniels, Ashley Barnes, fighters, battlers with quality not players that might be good in a few years under 26 the pl is brutal stand up now or go home to the championship Mike Ashley.
