Newcastle United are out of the League Cup (Carabao Cup) tonight after giving up three goals to Championship side Nottingham Forest who were the better team on the night and we lost 3-2 after extra time with the score 2-2 at the break and after 90 minutes.
A crowd of 27,709 witnessed the game which was Newcastle’s third defeat in a row and unless Rafa can quickly turn this thing around we could be in trouble this season, although of course there is still plenty of time for the team to improve.
But once again owner Mike Ashley is playing it safe with the club’s money and he has hardly shown any ambition this summer whereas other smaller clubs like Huddersfield Town have and have spent more money – a club that hasn’t been in the top division since 1973.
But on this showing, we don’t have good enough players for the Premier League although Rafa made a full 10 changes to the side that were beaten 1-0 by Huddersfield on Sunday.
Mitrovic gave United an early lead after just 3 minutes with a good drive following a cross from Rolando Aarons, who had an excellent game tonight.
Rolando Aarons congratulated after scoring great goal
But after 30 minutes it was Forest who took full advantage of really terrible marking at the back by Newcastle.
It was Cummings who scored with a header after 29 minutes and then a long ball beat the Newcastle defense and Cummings was there again to put the ball over Darlow and into the back of the net.
Rafa Benitez was beside himself on the touchline after witnessing such schoolboy defending from his defense.
One bright spot for Newcastle was the play of Rolando Aarons and he scored a terrific goal just before the break to make it 2-2 as he hit the ball into the back of the net from outside the penalty area in the first minute of added time.
Newcastle tried hard to win it in the second half but just before the 90 minutes was up it was Cummings again who hit the bar and that was a let-off for the Magpies.
But then 8 minutes into extra time and it was Walker who hit the winner for Forest who deserved the win against a poor looking Newcastle side.
This did not look like a Rafa Benitez side at all.
In truth, it was a really poor show by Newcastle and the mood of our fans will hardly be good after our third defeat in a row this season.
So much for winning anything this season too since the League Cup was our best chance.
But we shouldn’t get depressed – well not too much anyway.
Did we say this is not the way we expect his season to start?
