We don’t know how many players we can bring in over the last six days of the transfer window, but because time is so short, it’s not good news when some players we are after seem to be moving to other clubs.
The news a couple of days ago was that Pepe Reina was handing in a transfer request at Napoli so he could move to Newcastle but that doesn’t seem to hold true with PSG now after the 34-year-old goalkeeper.
Pepe has always played Champions League football so why he would move to a struggling Newcastle United is a good question – other than his former manager Rafa Benitez wants him at Newcastle.
Pepe has just one year left on his contract and would not be very expensive – around £4M has previously been reported – so we could afford him, although his wages will likely be high.
Pepe Reina – could be moving to PSG
The news out of Italy is that PSG want him in what is being described as being a surprise move and they are reportedly willing to pay a whopping £6.5M for him – maybe to see off any challenge from Newcastle.
Reina’s agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon had this to say to Football Italia:
“I can only say that Paris Saint-Germain interest in Reina is real.”
“However, only the clubs can confirm whether there are any formal offers on the table. “One thing is certain, he will not renew his contract.”
The big question with a move to PSG for Pepe is whether he will be the first choice at PSG and at his age, he will hardly want a move where he will warm the bench.
So maybe the deal with Newcastle could still be on?
However, with only six days left in the transfer window time is running short to get players in and move players out.
To get Pepe Reina into the club, we would first have to move Tim Krul out and if that’s not possible then presumably Tim would need to be one of the three goalkeepers fighting it out for the first team place at Newcastle.
Benfica is reported to be interested in the 29-year-old Krul who had a successful loan spell at AZ Alkmaar last season, but as we said time is getting short.
Players like Siem de Jong, Achraf Lazaar, Emmanuel Riviere, Sadio Haidara, Grant Hanley, Jack Colback and Henri Saivet have to be moved out and with only six days left that’s looking to be an ominous task.
