Our Man Of The Match Poll – Very Cose Between These Two Players

Our Man of the Match poll is currently extremely close with Mikel Merino and Matt Ritchie both on 37%
of the vote at the time of writing.

Matt had another one of those games when he was not only excellent up front for us and had an assist, but he worked his socks off for the cause.

We’re a little bit used to this great play from the former Bournemouth player, and he’s been just a terrific acquisition for us and the fans just love the lad.

Mikel Merino put in another convincing display for the side in the middle of the park, and by his own reckoning, he’s starting to get to grips with the Premier League.

This lad could be a great player for us at the end of the season if he keeps learning from Rafa and putting in performances like this.

Mikel Merino congratulates scorer Joselu after the first goal of the season

His through ball to Atsu out on the left that led to the first Newcastle goal of the season was a joy to watch.

It’s too close to call at the moment so if you haven’t voted yet – please do.

Completely agree with Jib’s previous post @6. Mitrovic is going for the shoulder to shoulder contact and catches Lanzini by accident, who makes a dog’s dinner out of the whole thing. It has been more than a year since Mitrovic has received a red card – it is bit of a shame how easily some people will write a player off over isolated incidents.

Tuff. We can but hope thats it. If so hes been very lucky imho.

On topic. Yesterday was really hard to pick our best player so many done well. Ritchie, clark, hayden, merino, any one of them could have got it for me. Clark got my vote for clearing from the line and scoring one.

Dwight Gayle, another player that has been cast into the ether after 2 sketchy games. Seems a bit short-sighted to have Gayle marked down as not good enough for PL at this stage.

IMO, no way a red for mitro, him and Brittos are miles apart in aggression and intent. We have players injured for weeks/months in dangerous tackles and their assailant gets nowt and it’s not even mentioned……this has happened to us for years. One of our players catches someone and there’s people in the media screaming for 3+ game bans……

Ancient – exactly so. He got consigned to purgatory in the trouser-soaked panic of our first couple of games. Star of the championship show suddenly a pl cast off. Disgraceful. I hope he gets a hat trick next time out.

Ancient. Gayle will come good this season we have faith. Just needs time to rebuild his confidence. The lad knows if his hammys go again he will be classed as too big a risk to buy so hes scared atm.
Writing him off would be wrong imho.
Same for mitro if rafa can get him to control himself hes a great player but will he take the risk on a player he dont rate ?

If mitro had got red and cost us three points the meltdoon would have been huge but he didnt cost us points so we move on and hope he gets away with it.

What do you care if we sell Gayle? You’re a wum not a fan. Plus, I love your new multiple, “Geordie Boys”.

Anyone see Tampax Abraham’s scuffed shinner against Palace? What a shit goal.

It was just a bit of fun, get a sense of humour, as for the swans tap in, Joselu goal wasn’t exactly a 20 yard screamer, just a tap in.

If Rafa won’t play Gayle up top with Joselu or Mitro than I get why he would want to sell him. If we only sold on the basis Jovetic was here than i’d be happy. Jovetic has much more to his game than any of our strikers do.

Gayle is a great finisher but if our tactics don’t suit his play it makes sense to bring in someone that does. It worked fine for him in the championship as lets face that league is shite.

Gayle can get goals in th premier league, but maybe Rafa wants the money as he is quite a valuable asset (aside from his hamstrings) being English and prolific in the championship.

Rafa has history of selling his best players to raise cash, he apparently ruined his relationship with alonso, telling him he wanted to sell him for funds

I am not hopeful we will get another striker – would be great for the club if we did.

I still think Reina will arrive and maybe Kennedy or that left back Nicholas Tagliafico .

Thought Mbemba did alright yesterday in what must of been a strange position for him – cant of played there many times before unless i am mistaken.

This WBA v Stoke game is not great….

Thanks for the link to the Mitro incident. Watched on match of the day last night and the slowmo and the showing out of full context made it look a lot worse. Watching it again, I believe Mitro was looking to shoulder barge him over (the pushing out of the elbow is a natural movement in this action). Mitro was looking at the ball, and though I think he knew where the player was and was ‘going for him’, he was not aware he was leaning forward and so the elbow to the face was an accident, although he was trying to barge into him.
Watching the replay, the referee obviously saw it and didn’t think it worthy of booking at the time; so I am feeling more confident no further action will be taken. If it is, then it is trial by tv, which boils all my bodily fluids.
I would like to add, the wetspam number 8 with the bandaged wrist, later went in for a revenge challenge on Mitro, which was malicious and dangerous. He didn’t get booked, but got a talking to from the ref; I remember him giving the ‘only one foul’ finger to the ref. Suprised match of the day didn’t think it their duty to bring that one up.

Have to agree. Have seen far worse elbows than that. It was a shoulder charge plus elbow lean, rather than a lash out.

Agree, by the way, that if it was someone on one of our players, I would be looking at it differently. But it is one of our players and I don’t want to see him banned. I am not saying he didn’t elbow (chicken flap) him in the ear; I’m saying he was going in to shoulder barge him, but wasn’t aware of the west ham players forward leaning position, so what was intended (my opinion) as an elbow to the ribs, turned into a ‘chicken flap’ to the ear.
Can you not see it that way? Obviously, if you just want to wind people up and enjoy the attention, please ignore my question and carry on.

I have looked at it quite a few times. I think the footage from the head on camera makes it clearer. The ball has gone, well gone. If it was a shoulder charge you get more strength if your arm is against the side of your body, he lifts his elbow up and that to me is intent.

But I respect others views and this is just my opinion. I hope the ref has seen it and it’s in his report that he saw it as possibly slightly late or accidental.

It would be nice to get a break for one of our players. Again though his reputation might not help (each case should be looked at on its own merits but the FA have never had a problem shafting our players)

I also think Shearer’ s silence on motd is deafening.

But happy to agree to disagree.

    Enjoy your day, off out.
