Rafa Benitez has always been keen on having competition for places at every single position in the Newcastle side.
And the manager wants to bring in another goalkeeper, left-back, winger, and striker this week before Thursday night at 11:00 pm to further increase the competition for places in the Newcastle side.
And after Newcastle’s excellent showing and 3-0 result against West Ham on Saturday we cannot see Rafa making many changes at all to that side that played so well and worked so hard for our terrific morale lifting victory.
Jonjo Shelvey should be back from his three match suspension, and impressive center-back Florian Lejeune should be fully recovered from his ankle injury.
But we’d surprised if either player makes an immediate return to the side, and we expect both of them to start the next game in south Wales on the bench.
Isaac Hayden – improving all the time at Newcastle
Ciaran Clark and captain Jamaal Lascelles have played really well in the last couple of games in central defense, and they play well together and have a good understanding.
And youngsters Isaac Hayden and Mikel Merino both had good games in central midfield, and both are likely to keep their places at Swansea in our next game after the two-week International break.
Rafa has talked about Isaac who still has plenty of room for improvement, but he’s already a much better player now than when he was signed from Arsenal last summer.
This is what Rafa has said today as reported in the Chronicle:
“Isaac is working hard to improve as well.”
“One of the main things you try and teach them is their understanding of the game – to have the compassion and commitment to know what to do in every situation.”
“The game plan was to work very hard and in two or three things they were crucial in that.”
“The plan was to stop West Ham doing their job and they did that very well.”
“Still I think Hayden has plenty of improvement left in him. He has the potential and is still a young player.”
“He will need time but he will improve.” “I would also like to win with Shelvey in the team!”
“It was important that every player and those that came from the bench that if you play well the next player has to do the same.”
“That’s perfect for the team.” “And for sure he will have to fight for his place back when the team plays like that.”
“Now they will have a chance to relax and we will see how they compete in training.”
