There have been reports from Argentina that Rafa Benitez is interested in signing Independiente left-back Nicolas Tagliafico to Newcastle before tonight’s deadline.
Nicolas turns 25 today and his agent Ricardo Schlieper has already confirmed the interest from Newcastle but has said the said the deal is complex.
But Newcastle are expected to lodge a bid to try to complete this deal today – and it may be our best opportunity in the waning hours of the transfer window.
We had been hopeful of getting the classy youngster Kenedy in from Chelsea but news today that Antonio Conte could block that move and keep the Brazilian as part of his first team squad for the season.
25-year-old Independiente left-back Nicolas Tagliafico
That is a blow to Newcastle and to Rafa – who could have improved the player.
The initial news on Tagliafico came from journalist and Argentinian football writer Peter Coates, who claimed that Newcastle were in talks with Independiente on a €4M deal for the once capped Argentine International.
And we can certainly afford that fee, but the question is whether his club wants to sell and whether the players wants to join Newcastle.
Rafa is keen to bring in a specialized left back to push local lad Paul Dummett for the starting position at Newcastle and Paul is out injured with another hamstring injury.
We are just a little doubtful with so little time left that Newcastle can put off this deal.
But we hope we can – it would not be good if we cannot sign at least one new player today.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2If this transfer can actually be done, then I would prefer Penfold to focus on this one at the expense of any other. However, I predict nothing will happen today.

Comment #4What was it Rafa said, we need to get rid of some before anymore come in.
Since then 3 have left (rivi, de Jong, Hanley) so if we bring none in then we know without a doubt that he’s been shafted.

I think he has already been shafted mate.
The next 15 hours or so will show if he has been totally shafted.

Comment #12you’d think the lad would need to be on a plane already from Argentina?
I see him or Kennedy as the only incoming, maybe one or two that were not on the radar.
A few will definitely go e.g. Colback

Comment #14Good to know that we’re in with the right sort of people – ‘technical failure” – does that apple to our transfer policy as well ?
Online gambling firm 888 is to pay a record penalty of £7.8m after it failed to protect vulnerable customers.
The Gambling Commission said there were “significant flaws” in the firm’s social responsibility processes.
The regulator highlighted a technical failure which meant 7,000 customers who had chosen to bar themselves from their 888 accounts were still able to gamble.
Sarah Harrison, chief executive at the Gambling Commission, said the fine would ensure that “lessons are learnt”.

The only surprise for me is that Rafa is still here mate. GFF reckon Gayle is staying and Mitro is leaving today, I can’t see any truth in it, but that is what the press do, anything to sell a story.

Comment #21Quite frankly the net spend at this club in this window is an absolute disgrace and an insult to United supporters. Let’s not kid ourselves – nobody is coming in today – it will be like all the other windows in the past where the pathetic pleas of “We tried our hardest but we couldn’t get them over the line” will once again be trotted out to football’s most abused and gullible fans after the curtain comes down.
This owner HAS to go and the supporters have to make it happen in whatever way they can.
For 10 years now this club has done nothing and will continue to do nothing until the day The Controller decides he doesn’t want all his FREE advertising for his tat empire.
And can anyone see THAT happening?
