Jacob Murphy, Mikel Merino And Jesus Gamez All Start At Swansea City

Newcastle have just released the team that will play Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon and manager Rafa Benitez will not be in attendance because of discomfort caused by a hernia operation last Monday.

Here’s the team as just issued on the Newcastle United Twitter account.

Jacob Murphy has displaced Atsu on the left wing with the Ghanaian International dropping to the bench.

DeAndre Yedlin, Florian Lejeune, and Jonjo Shelvey are also on the bench since they are all available again.

Gamez comes in – probably at left back – to replace Chancel Mbemba who was filling in for Paul Dummett until he himself was injured playing for DR Congo last week.

Both Dummett and Mbemba have hamstring strains with Paul’s keeping him out until possibly November.

Murphy is going to run riot down that LW. Disappointing whenever I have seen him on the right, but a completely different prospect on his natural side.

I still think we will win this game, 2-0 and 10th in the table will do nicely tonight. HWTL!

Suppose it makes sense, what with paying all that money and with atsu being away on international duty. Means it was just Ritchie missing from the forwards in training this week.

Wi ya bugga – strange line-up

Don’t like – to lightweight – to defensive for me. Ther weakness is there defence and i don’t see much penetration with our front one – hope I am wrong.
Would of brought Lejuene bac for Lascalles and Yedlin at the back – kept Atsu on as he has done nowt wrong this season so far.

bench looks as strong as the team we are puttig out.

    Hope I am wrong

think we wil get pummelled looking at the way Swansea have lined up with Abrahams, Ayew up front with Sanches playing behind and Fer who also gets on the score sheet

Interesting team selection. Need to give the returning players some game time today at some point to get them playing again.
I’m a great believer in always playing your best eleven where possible, which would include Lejeune at centre back.
Still, it is what it is and nobody should let us down.

Atsu has looked good this season. You could argue his final ball/decision making/movement awareness needs some working on. But his acceleration is very good and he causes defenders problems. Be interesting to see what happens next week, particularly if Murphy has a good game.

The last time an assistant deputised for a manager was when Carver replaced the banned Pardew. Is that right?

Look quite weak at the back, Manquillo and Gamez are poor and Lascelles is only slightly better. Clark will have it all to do, at least Yedlin and Lejuene are back again.

Looking forward to seeing Merino and Joselu again and seeing if Murphy is any good in his preferred position.

re Murphy, it also means him and Gamez have had a week working together on their roles on that side of the pitch. With Mbemba being injured, the pair (Atsu/Mbemba) couldn’t just resume their roles/previous training.

Atsu very unlucky to lose his place, been very good in the first few games, surely Ritchie can move inside as Perez dosn’t offer enough

Atsu is probably being rested. And Shelvey being benched is correct. That nuthead deserves it. Our full backs is what I worry. Manquillo and gamez are poor. Not convinced. And we also need to deal with sanches. Who can control midfield single handedly..

Maybe the plan is to contain them for 70 minutes until they tire then bring on Gayle and Atsu against their flagging back four. Keep a clean sheet will be the main focus until then. imo.

Nufc 83, don’t know why u were slagging off people who said shelvey wudnt play. It was pretty obvious to me. I don’t even have much expectation of a point with that team. We’ll all be back in relegation stress mode later.

Perez has offered so little in recent matches, considering the raving about how well Gayle has been doing in training I wonder why they didn’t start with him?

I am glad however that Shelvey hasn’t just walked back straight into the starting 11, he let himself down, his team and he let us down. Barring injuries I’d expect him to come on at some point, but he has a very large mountain to climb to regain our trust.

Munster tbh I did say this morning Rafa wouldn’t change a winning side however I think it’s crazy (covered my anal). Certainly not obvious that our best player last year would go on the bench even if he does deserve it for being an idiot.

Atsu on the bench likely because of all the travelling he’s done, had we been at home it may have been different, but this is a chance for Murphy.

Interested to see Gamez at LB. Been here well over a year now and still don’t know what to make of him due to lack of playing time in league matches where he’s surrounded by other first-teamers and 3pts are on the line.

Other than that no surprises for me. Shelvey was always going to be on the bench.

jesper – I believe that Nowtv is one of those geo-blocked services so if you are abroad (Denmark) you cannot get it. As you suggest a VPN would be required or smart DNS to get around the blocking.
