News today that Mike Ashley has offered to give Newcastle players a £20M bonus if the club wins the FA Cup next May.
Well would you believe it – it even looks like Mike wants to win something for a change.
The players have been in dispute over their bonus payments for the season and the latest on that was the players would share £1M for finishing in 17th place in the league and safety.
And they would get an additional £1M for every place higher than that.
Sky Sports have reported the players wanted a meeting with owner Mike Ashley and Managing Director Lee Charnley to discuss the bonus payments.
The report also has the statement in it that Mike Ashley “will donate £20M to the players if they win the FA Cup this season”.
Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley
The last time we won the FA Cup was way back in 1955 – 62 years ago – when we tore apart a Don Revie led side 3-1 at Wembley, and that was our third FA Cup win in five years.
Goals were scored by Jackie Milburn (1), Bobby Mitchell (52) and George Hannah (59).
If the Sky report is accurate, that would be good news because £20M is a tidy sum and it looks like Mike is willing to pay out money to players for success on the field.
You never know, and this is stretching it a bit we know, but he may even start paying out money to Rafa Benitez so he can get a decent team in place at Newcastle.
Burt if he does that the likelihood he would have to pay out that £20M increases significantly of course.
We are hoping Mike Ashley will soon wake up to what is possible for Newcastle United under Rafa Benitez if only the owner will fully support him.
