Jamaal Lascelles excellent performance for Newcastle yesterday has been noticed, and he makes Jamie Redknapp’s Premier League’s Team of the Week.
The other player who was outstanding for us yesterday was Spanish U21 International Mikel Merino who put in another strong performance in central midfield, and the lad is keeping Jonjo Shelvey on the bench.
We expect Mikel to be recognized by the national press sooner rather than later.
And it seems we have an obligation to buy him for £6M after he’s made 20 first team appearances for Newcastle – according to GOAL.
The sooner we can do that the better.
Jamaal Lascelles – makes Team of the Week
Congratulations to both our players on two excellent performances yesterday.

Hope he’s enjoying the winning streak!
Think most of us would have settled for 6 points from 4 games – would be 57 points at season’s end!

Comment #48Assuming all the squad is fit, and no one under suspension, this could be our strongest line-up.
……………………………ELLIOT..
…….LASCELLES….. LEJEUNE…….. CLARK…
…………………………..MBEMBA…….
…RITCHIE…. SHELVEY….HAYDEN….AARONS
…………………………MERINO….
………………………….JOSELU…
Three at the back, no weak links, GAMEZ and DUMMETT on the bench.
MBEMBA in front of the back three, he has been a revelation this season! He is very versatile, and can play in all the back line positions, should it be necessary to resort to a back four during a game. He is also able to support and link with the mid-field, both defensively and in attack.
RITCHIE and AARONS are our best wingers, and SHELVEY and HAYDEN are a balanced central mid-field.
The number 10 is MERINO, he is simply a natural, all he lacks is experience, and that will come thick and fast!
Finally, leading the attack should be JOSELU, until January there is no other choice to start a game.
3151, way to go? HWTL…

That’s 4 points over my very optimistic prediction of 53 points and 9th place!!!

Comment #50One thing I will say, I’m pleased colback has gone, reducing the risk of giving needless free kicks away in dangerous areas and without Mitro and Shelvey in the team yesterday we vastly reduced the risk of going down to ten men although Richie was lucky just to receive a yellow he’s a clean player on the whole.

If I am not there I do not give merit marks as I cannot see on the tele the movement (bigger picture) of the ball that I can see at the back of the Gallowgate.
Yeah I saw the game in the pub thought we played well – had not much of the ball but when we did we used it well quick decisive passing going forward.

bobbybee give it a rest man.
you claim to be able to let things rest, you claim to only talk football, you claim to have the right to respond to digs, you rebuke other who talk of multiples.
Yet again you are dragging me into your spat/rant and I have not even posted today – accusing me of being a multiple.
You commit all the “blog crimes” you accuse others of doing – but cannot see it yourself.
You seem to relish angry outbursts/rants. Truly the blogs “Mr Angry”. Give it a rest or you’ll have a heart attack.

You need to take a leaf out of your own book and stfu yourself, either that or get them piles siphoned or whatever it is you get done to them, surely blowing your gasket every-time you read something you don’t like can’t be good for them. You need to get your facts right, not once have I even mentioned a boycott, and despite what Jib says yet could find no evidence I never once said I wouldn’t go back while Ashley was there, Jib tried to find my posts saying I wouldn’t but couldn’t, lets not go down the road of making up shit to back up arguments. As for snidey by not mentioning you, you know what you said as did a few others do you want me to name everyone. I have never heard anything so ridiculous as suggesting the manager has to drive down to Shirebrook, get past Ashleys security and kick his office door in, who do you think he is, Jack bloody Reacher,

Comment #54The pundits are getting unbelievably aroused with the recent high foot trend… It’s football and high feet are part and parcel, we don’t play PL football with caveats of playing on the deck and ball can’t go above waist height ffs. This isn’t a new thing, it happens in every game… And I mean EVERY game.
In my opinion the pundits are bricking it about impending redundancies with TMO on the cusp of an imminent introduction! 🙂

I seen yesterday that instead of feeling compelled to chase the ball down and put pressure on the ball player we regroup, take our positions and stay as a unit… I never thought I’d ever see a backline in black and white keeping shape in my lifetime! Haha

Comment #57We invite teams to try and get through us then pinch the ball and break hence the lack of possession in both games, you need quick ball players to pull this off and I think Rafa has possibly done it on a relative shoestring!

Comment #59Bit late to the party on this latest game, happy with that result. Decent work-like performance from the team. Jam deffo deserved his MOM for the game, although special mention should be made to Merino, and also to Gamez, who considering he’s hardly kicked a ball for us put in a decent shift. Looking forward to taking on Stoke next Sat.

I must admit that I’ve seen nothing to suggest that Aarons is anywhere close to being one of our best wingers. He’s a lad with promise and potential – and had things been handled right this window we’d have signed somebody to allow Aarons out on loan to get first team experience.
Also I must say I totally disagree with having Merino in at No 10. He’s an all-round box-to-box midfield, we’d be better moving Shelvey further forward IMO.
I wouldn’t play 3 at the back either, the basis of our season will be robust defending and call me old fashioned but the best basis for defence is a flat back 4. Admittedly, Dummett is a poor LB but Mbemba has shown himself capable as has Gamez but it is an area we need investment in.

Comment #61Let’s hope because it’s an old fashioned 3pm Saturday game, without the Sky pundits/kangaroo court and hopefully, little to excite the MoTD clowns!
We’re on Sky ref watch/kangaroo court, now.
Apparently Ritchie and Diame reds, Merino yellow/2 game ban if he got penalty – no mention of the kick in the knackers!

Comment #65krul so you are saying that Joselu is not as good as Mitro at getting on the end of crosses into the box (as you call that his specialty). Have you actually watched Joselu ?? He is much better in the air than Mitro and actually has good movement in the box to create space. Mitro is so static in the box it is terrible to watch crosses coming in and him just standing there and not attacking the ball at all.
Joselu for me is better in all departments than mitro is now.

Comment #66Ruddy that is harsh on Aarons everytime the lad has had a chance to shine he has taken it. If Richie stays as a winger (and is not moved to no10) then he has the right spot nailed on. Atsu has performed well this season but Aarons is hot on his heels for me. Not a chance should Aarons be going on loan.

Comment #68Well everyone at work has now stopped asking if they think we’ll stop up, we look like a team with confidence and a decent run of games coming up, we’ll obviously lose a few, probably more than we’ll win but the Rafa factor will see us through, let’s just hope Mashers gives him a shed load of money for players in January to convince him to sign a new deal.

Comment #69Speaking of Aaron’s, I would have preferred he was given a chance in stead of splashing all our dough on Murphy knowing we needed a +15 goalscorer…
…regardless of Joselu being a decent bloke and an all round player we needed something different and and that’s all I am thinking when I look at him…

Comment #71I really don’t think Aarons is anywhere near the starting 11 in my opinion. He’s looked decent when he’s played but I think rose tinted spectacles are being put on here. I’d like to see him get more game time and a loan would have been the best bet for him. Right spot nailed on? Dunno where you’re getting that from mate.

Comment #73The emergence of the Hayden-Merino partnership has hopefully put paid to the idea that Shelvey is undroppable. Yes, he may be the most technically proficient player in our team but if he’s missing 5/6 games a season through suspension then what good is he to us?
I’ve been a fan of his for a while, but he’s at a cross-roads and it’s time to put up or shut up.

Agreed on Joselu. Don’t know what Krul is on about him not being a specialist target man. He wins more of his headers and directs them better than Mitrovic, has a better touch, is more methodical and doesn’t run on emotions. Just because he’s more mobile and has better movement too doesn’t make him not a target man. Better in every department, a much more natural footballer.

Comment #76I really think we are crying out for a No. 10 as opposed to someone to lead the line for us up front. Joselu has shown in the couple of games for us he can do a job, we have Mitro to bully defences every now and then, and Gayle to do his hamstring while running on to the odd ball over the top.
Perez, although he worked hard, is just not good enough to link up play for us in that No. 10 role.

Comment #77The only thing I think should have been done different with the wingers is buying Townsend in January, like I’ve said I’m desperate for Murphy to come good as he’s one of us who’s grown up in London but I think the money would have been better spent on Townsend who had already proved himself under Rafa.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Perez is just not up to mustard – in fact if we signed a LB and a number 10 and perhaps another striker we’d have the makings of a pretty decent starting 11 with good back ups pretty much across the board.

Comment #79Ruddy…he’s still good for 32 games 😉 and Hayden will get a run out as well!
…I think they are working with Shelvey to try and control his anger and frustration. For some that can actually be a disease.
He’s no way near as as prone to short fuse as Barton and a lot of people always found excuses for him. All support Shelvey through this as long as he tries to shift his demons.
