Daryl Murphy did well at Newcastle last season and was almost the perfect professional who was often praised by manager Rafa Benitez for his patience and professionalism when he wasn;t playing too much.
He scored six goals for us and was a great example to the rest of the squad with the way he committed himself to the Newcastle cause and got the job done for us when given a chance.
And last night playing at the Stadium of Light he scored the winner after 86 minutes in the 1-0 Nottingham Forest win, and that gives Daryl his 4th goal of the season.
After Sunderland took four points from their first two Championship games, they now have lost their last four league games and have only 5 points from their first 7 games.
Daryl Murphy after scoring last night against the Black Cats
That puts them in 20th place in the Championship table, and alarm bells should be going off in the Sunderland Board room.
We found out last year that clubs can quickly seal their fate by having a poor start to the season and that happened to Aston Villa last season.
And they are not doing much better this season with only 7 points from their first 7 games under Geordie manager Steve Bruce.
The Championship these days is really tough because of the huge incentive to get into the big money of the Premier League.
It also shows what a brilliant job Rafa Benitez did for us last season, and he hasn’t received the credit he deserves for that and probably never will.
Now Rafa needs to get us into the top six in the PL, and then he’ll receive plenty of credit.
